    Look up a Palomar knot. It's a stronger knot than the line itself and once you get the hang, much faster to tie. (Kayak fished tournaments for red drum/speckled sea trout and needed to tie super fast in FL.I always hear you talk about needing to tie fast. Once you get it down, it's amazing.

    Nu, you should exchange or return your Walmart purchased Ugly Stik rod because you bought the wrong rod for your reel. You bought a casting rod for a spinning reel, i.e. smaller eyes on rod. This will cause your casts to be short and inefficient.

    If you tie a double surgeon loop knot on the leader alone big enough to feed a pinched loop through the swivel and then feed the fly through the opened surgeon knot loop that you just fed through.
    Then you can slide it on the swivel and change it quicker and easier.
    And if you setup up few leaders and have them in a leader wallet.
    It makes it easier and quicker to change out a broken leader.
    Then you will not have to give up your premium spot.
    And if you work it out in your head
    You can use a double surgeon knot on the main line as well.
    I make the loop big enough so I can use 1/8 oz barrel weights to easily add or remove based on how deep or fast the river I am fishing. Start with 3/8 oz, then add if you do not feel the bottom. You can remove if you end up adding too much weight and are getting stuck in the rocks.
    Don't forget the bead between the bell weights and the swivel so you can protect the line connected to the swivel. (This method works better if your main line is braided line.)

    Same reel and pole I started on . Lost the same eyelet and after 4-500 fish the reel wore out. I liked the setup for its ruggedness but you do sacrifice some sensitivity. But it won't let you down

    How you purchase parts for your truck apply that to fishing... go cheap and youll end up buying it and again and again. Buy quality for more enjoyable/less fatigue experience but dont need to break the bank.
    For those who have yet to experience combat fishing...
    Since its combat shoulder to shoulder fishing, you need to reel in your fish asap for obvious reasons. Thus you must have the right gears. Note, you're fighting the fish and the current. On top of that if you snag the fish body/tail that makes it worse! Your reel must have strong drag power, strong lines (i prefer braid NO STRETCH faster hook set). Rod must have strong backbone (medium heavy is ideal), good bend, fast tip. Hooks, buy quality brand in bulk and make your own flys if possible (Bass Pro has quality hooks in bulk). If you buy premaid make sure they use quality brand hooks because salmons have very hard jaw. It's bones and teeth not like your typical mouth on a bass. Again this is combat fishing, you want to fight the fish as minimal as possible as fast as possible. Dont be that a-hole that snags eveyone's line.
    Prep ahead of time like nutty did, have the proper gears, be friendly and respect the folks around you and enjoy your time.
    This is how i have my set up based on my 20 years experience fishing the Pacific Northwest.

    good video, i normally go 25lb-35lbs line; depending on the rods. bait casters are better with 25-35lbs. spinning reels you can go to 40lbs. a light weight rod can really make the fishing trip much more enjoyable. can't wait to get up there, prefer the second run of the reds, they're much more bigger and go up to the lake to breed.

    Color doesnt matter since reds arent biting the flies, all about what you can see in the water 👍 tight lines!

    • @mushroomlw1717
      @mushroomlw1717 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I strongly disagree that the spawning salmon do not bite.
      For some reason I am not smart enough to know. But I notice that early in the year the reds will bite a blue fly. Or the silver salmon really like a chartreuse fly.
      In the middle of the summer salmon will bite a smelt fly as they are trying to keep the baby fish from eating their eggs. And in the fall the salmon will bite a leech fly or a Dali lama fly for the same reason as the smelt fly.
      It all depends on how you present each fly.
      It took me awhile, but I watched and copied other old timers on the river.

    • @NuttyNu
      @NuttyNu  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use it. But that wont catch any. It's more of a flossing method

    • @jdsadventures4985
      @jdsadventures4985 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty sure it's artificial lure only, no bait. even leader length and hook size are regulated by fish and game. It says on fish and game website.

  • @Pakmann2k
    @Pakmann2k 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You leader was a bit long. To explain how this rig works is to understand the original name, "flossing." Sockeye in particular swim with open mouths, the weight drops, the current pulls the hook, making the line a straight line across the bottom. Socekeye run into the line with a mouth open and when you feel that "bump," you yank. When you yank, if the line is in the sock eye's mouth, the hook comes across and nails em in the mouth. Many many many snags also happen but that is the legit explanation. After 20yrs of sockeye fishing on the Kenai, I don't even bother with a fly, Gakakatsu #3 bare hook on a line kills it. For Russian, Gamakatsu Russian river fly, blank, with maybe a bead for drag. Totally agree with the other part, I have full rigs prebuilt all the time. I prefer a sliding egg weight in between two swivels and then a 4ft leader, never fails me. Tight lines and have fun!
