He didn't get to pick what there were. There were only those 3 options. He said, "empty bishop square." As in, there wasn't a piece there. So he gave hermione the safest piece to protect her. Harry a piece that's easy to escape with. And himself the worst option out of bravery.
True, the mistake was there in the books, though :D, there, Ron announced what pieces they will be and the corresponding magical pieces left the chessboard to make room for them.
Great content but I don’t think Ron was able to choose what positions they needed to fill, bishop, castle, and king were empty when they walked up to the board

IMO Ron played brilliantly. He essentially had 3 piece in addition to King that he can't lose. And he almost succeed in doing so only to lose himself at end. This is super hard. Try playing a game online and forfeit whenever you lose that bishop knight or rock and you will not be able to stay on your current rank.
There’s a black rook in the right of the shot for reference, where it appears to be sitting. There’s also a black bishop on the left of the shot which looks identical to the white bishop on C1.
4:23 move black rook to c1 than it must be eliminated by white rook from b1 than Harry can eliminate this rook going to c1 1 rook and 2 bishops are stronger than 1 queen
Going into an endgame where you can't trade your rook, knight, or bishop seems like a horrible idea. That said, if this were a casual online game, I probably would've played that

No. It’s not checkmate until the other side has no other move that will take the king out of check. In this case, white has the queen, which takes Ron.
You got it all WRONG DUDE! Harry Potter is the DARK SQUARE BISHOP of Black as what you pictured, but Hermonie is NOT the rook on the king side! Right and if Ron would choose anyone as King, it would be Harry as you know from the end of the scene Also in my opinion, at least one rook has to be unplayed, because often one of them dies
Check 2:56, you’ll notice the black queen is on a white diagonal, meaning the film producers without realizing misplaced the entire board. Then they shot the later scenes and switched the pieces they were playing.

You're right
True
In the movie, yes, but in the book it says those pieces walk off the board.
This shows that Ron made decisions that not only won the game but made sure Harry was conscious enough to continue to Voldemort

i noticed as well lol
They didn't want to animate Harry smashing the queen on the last move :D
Nerd mode: Ron is not the king because the rider is missing on the knight
The very last move is true, that it wasnt checkmate. But my guess is that this was resign from white. Or so to speak. It wouldn't have changed outcome
So how tf Magnus remember this game lol
He did make the move, you can see the queen on the ground next to him after he calls checkmate. I guess it was just cut.
4:32 THE ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK
Well I suppose they skipped the queen sacrifice because likely there wasn't a good way to have Harry take her

Thank you for this. Enjoyed it
Harry may have called "Checkmate" incorrectly, but i think White just resigned at that point.
Loved the vid! I'm learning how to play chess and I remembered this scene ! Great game btw, imo great decisions were made
@antonietaovalle1484 how’s your chess skills 10 months later?
No dissapointment taken. The White Queen resigned because even magical pieces can see mate in 1 xD

at 1:36 - that's not a bishop on c1 it's a rook, you can look up the isle of lewis chess pieces and then compare to what you see in the film

Idk, somehow i got weird feeling like memories that harry have talk about chess with the crying ghost, merry beth i guess....
can someone please correct me but if you can see checkmate x number of steps ahead you can call checkmate in x and the match is over?
shout out to International Master Jeremy Silman for creating this Chess sequence
You could also take the king sword falling as a resignation
Good content in light of the new video game
Ron said queen side castle and put Hermione on the kind side😭
in the movie there was no empty square so kinda messed up. also im curious how harry could destroy queen with bare hands :)
Ron asumed that the Queen will go for him instead of Harry, easiest mistake to make.
ron checked the king
Ron Checked the king, The queens only option was to take him.

Rc1+ is check, so you must eliminate threat ( Rc1 and therefore Bc1 ),
cover with queen ( Qd1 followed by Rd1 ) or escape king Kg2.
