in northern europe we fill insulation in the middel, then the backstop 10mm from egde and then a weatherresistant and slightly elastic filler with color to match the window

The scene at the window placing an order is exactly how my 4 year old has me order imaginary ice creams at the window of her playhouse, yet bizarrely I enjoyed watching it. Still working my way through from the beginning and still loving it you legend!

Cedar is great for keeping bugs away ..Here in Oregon there is plenty of cedar. We also use the backing rod for our vynal windows ( solid foam tubing ) fill the void and put stick on tar paper over the gap with sticks to the wood easier and lasts for ever and doesn't react with the foam. Some corks react with the foam rod, and you spend more time putting it in the gap..
The only time my wife ever wants to watch your videos is when Paerau is in them.... lol she has just this instant started looking him up on the 'gram. She asked if he is going to do a "Paerau Cooks on the job" video? Would be a hit I think!
I’m surprised they don’t let you use the expanding foam tape that when you stick the tape round the edge it expands and fills the gap over a few hours !
I’m a window fitter in the uk I like how you lot just cut round the whole frame and take it out as one that rarely happens here 👍

Bum nips up slightly when you open the window for the first time, always get that feeling, hope I didn't forget any of the fixings 🤞 lol Cut your nozzle bigger so the sealant goes in quicker. Enjoying the videos cheers.

Silicone idea is crazy. If you can't use expanding foam cause you say it pushes in to the cavity. Use low expansion foam that stay soft and never sets hard.
It was probably someone of higher power that stated silicone needs to be used instead of low expansion foam, baring in mind this person probably has no idea what he's talking about (the person of higher power) GJ as always Scott
The way he said it, this almost sounds like it’s updated code for his area of NZ? I could be wrong, but that’s the impression I was under after Scott explained it.
silicon is not industry standard, it's personal preference.
First, silicone shrinks, second - if that rod is closed cell (i.e waterproof) then just bead either side with a thicker nozzle cut.
Bro, silicone tip for between jamb and framing.
Cut the nozzle tip as big as possible, pump heaps in there so it's full and protruding out of the gap slightly and get some soapy water in a spray bottle (any dishwash liquid), spray liberally and tool it smooth (popsicle stick or even an off cut of timber). You waste a bit of silicone but is honestly about 5x quicker than that way. Keep a few rags and a bucket handy.
That's for a finished bead. I hope they put some window casing over it. It was a modern trim before.
@@smokingcheeba420 no I use it for speed filling too. If you don't use the soapy water it gets everywhere/messy. Just insures the gap is totally full and the silicone spans it properly. Not fussed about the profile, more that it's full, fast and clean.

I'm good with a caulk gun. It's an art. Less is more I guess. That's how the plumbers do it. The soap keeps it from sticking where you dont want it to. We use a ton of silicone on our jobs. We could just use PL.

Hey Scott, wouldn't the foam go to the easiest options when it expands? expanding into the house instead of pushing the pef rod into the cavity. Anyway there is a few questionable regulations I am learning as an apprentice builder in Tauranga. But it is what it is!
Scott, you need the makita applicator gun, Makita CG100DZB, for that sealing job. The white foam you put in are called bottningslist in sweden and over that we put sikaflex sealing. Its usually Done in brick and rock fasads.

In America we call it backer rod. I noticed that none of the caulkers her use powred guns. They say it's hard to control the flow.

How do you close that first part of the window from the inside, after it's swung open and clicked into place 180 degrees out?
That's a strange way to seal those up I wonder what the reasonong is. In the USA we use low expansion foam and fill the entire Gap with it no backer.

I believe thats a marvin ultimate clad bi-fold window. At least in the states(oregon) that's what i have been working with. One about that size sells from Marvin at about $14,700. Those windows are no joke.

@@jlexperience but its not a slider. Marvin also sells sliders, but this is their folding window series. Aluminum framing with silconized polyester finishing, and reflective coatings on the glass make it so expensive.
Would it work just as well and save some silicone (and Paerau's time) to just run two vertical beads, one on either side of the foam?
Use small bead silicone to fix the white rope material in place. Let set up, and then use expanding foam.

Instead of punching the nails of the feather board, would it not be possible to cut (some of) them using the multitool? Then it might be possible to get a bar further up? (Might be a dumb question, but sometimes that’s a valid way of learning ... I hope!)
out curious, can you put thin coat silicone or liquid nail to hold in place then use expansion foam? cos by the look of it you need to use lots of silicone...

Hey folks. Silly question from an Aussie neighbor across the ditch. Is flyscreen common in NZ? My current house didn't have any when I moved in, and it was like night of the bugs and arachnids inside before long. (Super important here.)

We're still using expanding foam. Hadn't heard about the silicone change. Although I haven't noticed any issues with the foam pushing the PEF rod out into the cavity.
We're still using foam too. Same city. With how tightly I pack my PEF rod, it seems strange that the foam could move it. I don't think I ever recall seeing the rod being pushed out of the opening looking in from cladding side.

Only house and fruit flies really. If you live near bush, sandflies and mosquitoes. But that's about it.
Its strange to think that you would seal the windows with all that silicon to stop draft yet use dont insulate ya houses in N.Z. Love the videos bro with much love across the pond from Australia

I love my 10 oz stiletto. But I only do finish carpentry. Now made by Milwaukee. Same hammer.

Screwing in the top of the window? In OZ we are told to only secure the sides & bottom & leave a small gap at the top to allow for frame movement. If the frame moves & you have screws or nails through it, the fasteners will pop through the timber & look ugly.
Straight edge n level tricks for mint jambs could have added to the value . Although it gets a bit technical n takes away from the entertainment factor😅🤓🏆👍

Your job look so easy I got a quote from a builder to replace my windows the amount of cladding that I need to remove is a lot more than the 2 pieces that you remove here. I was hoping that I don't have to remove any since my cladding is most likely those direct fixed asbestos fibre cement. Now I just have to show him your video and ask why I need to spend more money on cladding.

you need to make the window sill in the kitchen flush with the aluminium and flush with a narrow bench outside

Ramset poly gap rod got 4 size ：10mm 15mm 25mm 30mm until 50mm ,if too loose u can buy next size big or twist them together to push in

The new wanz code has no packers in the head jamb, theres a building inspector in tauranga that looks for it and will fail, it gives the lintel abit of room for sag
Building inspectors, recall an old chippie that over his time reckoned most were failed builders, bitter ones at that. One job I was one this young woman turns up, yep building inspector, he comments she doesn't know shit and just goes around the house checking the wind rating for all the joinery, and that's exactly what she did. Hopeless.

Looks like it is something similar to the Makita DTD154Z. A lot of different versions of it I can see, but I do not know the differences between them. They are nice to use though.

Although it says the use of stainless, most builders I know use 10gauge zinc screws instead.
thanks, yes it states "pairs of nails or stainless screws"at the spacings i described.Zinc is no good due to the 3.2 treatment in the reveals n.our council inforces 3 inch galv nails in pairs at those spacings which is overkill in my opinion especially once you foam and archatrave
