- The Morning Footy crew welcome in Joshua Kloke, a staff writer at The Athletic, where he covers Canadian soccer. The group discuss everything surrounding this wild case of drone usage by Canada that has been found to be systematic. As a result of being caught, Candian Women's Head Coach Bev Priestman has been sent home from the Olympics taking place in Paris. The question now is, how should the Canada Federation be reprimanded? What a disgrace for our country(. These coaches should never coach a game for Canada again!
Not just the coaches, sadly TSN revealed they have been cheating for years, both men and women teams. This is like cancer.

sure blame it on the nationality lol. the entire staff knew and probably also the executives behind the team. the reporter says, this has been going on for years.
My concern is how many players knew for sure or suspected that their "scouting" reports came from shady sources. As a player, wouldn't you start wondering "how did our coaching staff know about our opposition in such detail? Did they get them solely from publicly available sources?" In other words, how were illegally obtained information shared to the players so that they were unaware of how they were obtained.
They're always going on about what a tight-knit group they are. So of course they all knew. But if they had a problem with it, they would likely have feared repercussions for saying anything.
Everybody knew ! Now is revealed that both men and women teams were cheating systematically over years! What about the medals and the 3rd place in Copa America? should them be striped after investigation? this is embarrassing for the country
However if the Canada's team players knew or not it was used to help them win, period. They have been doing this for years from what've I've read. They even came and sat in the stadium. Asked to leave and then sat somewhere else then asked again who they were and they were Canada reps. He did leave after the 2nd response from security. It is beyond belief that their coaches and exes were behind all of this. What did they think this would someday come to? Actually they should have been kicked out of the Olympics'. Though China let in after they were caught taking illegal drugs for improvement. This is the world we all live in. Full of people planning demise, stealing, cheating for profit or glory. You can't trust anyone. The coaches did this for profit and glory and keeping their jobs with long contracts.

Having never really seen a soccer practice it's hard for me to imagine what useful information could possibly be gleaned from a drone.
not many special plays youd need to spy on imo. beyond free kicks and corners not sure what they could gleem from spying. not like soccer has a ton of different formations or plays you need to know about ahead of time.

@@T.R.75 at the high level it makes a big difference. Good teams may use 2-3 formations. They may play different version of the a formation, for instance 5-2-3 in defense and 3-2-5 in attack. Do they defend narrow? Do they play a 6 or 8? in the midfield? Do they have speed on the wings and therefore spread the field? Do they counter attack? Who are their threats? Is the goalie a good field player and a sweeper keeper? What is her punt/throw range? DO they build out of the back? What is their shape on goal kicks? Do they play Tiki-Taka? Long ball? Do strikers play as a false 9? Do they like to receive the ball at their feet and turn? With drone footage I could answer hundreds of questions.
A lot of info!!!! Team sports are more than 50% made of tactical moves...if the team's defence knew how the attack will "surprise" them they can fix the defence on purpose. This is big cheating

Not really, this is new. More than that, TSN revealed both Canadian teams (men and women) have been doing this for years! No excuses here. This is a sad day for Canadian sports, this is embarrassing. I will be surprised if they do not strip the gold medal and the third place in Copa America
@fonkamex its not new though. Teams have been doing this for years just haven't gotten caught. The canadian media has blown this out of the water. This isn't even that deep. They should focus on how well they are playing.
@ 8:50 mark... I'm sorry for the players - an unintended consequence - but they were coached and prepared for matches by their coaches who obtained an unfair advantage. It's a team effort in good times and bad. Again, sorry for the players - but they did benefit, even if not having first hand knowledge.

It's a tough question for sure what punishment would be adequate... On one hand they had an advantage knowledgewise, but on the other they still had to play smart and beat sweden in the final and the rest of their competitors.
It really sucks, because players sure had no way to know how their coaches came to their conclusions, they'd have just assumed that the coaches tried their best and were really lucky.

The team has been penalized. The bigger problem is cheating, once unthinkable for Canadians, has now become acceptable under Trudeau.

I remember when they stripped the gold medal from ben johnson. They gave it to Carl Lewis. Then they found out after a lot of years that he was also using peds. They never stripped the medals from him. Says a lot about the olympics.

If is difficult to conclude if players benefits from the coaches cheating. Coaches used the information illegal obtained to direct, select, decide on what instruction to give to players, which players to play etc.. The players may not know that the some of the coaching instructions they received came from illegal sources but I would think that they must have receive different instructions had their coaches not cheated. How much this impacted the results nobody can know. Are we saying that if coaches cheated but players did not but may have benefited from their coaches action, then it is acceptable and the match results should stand? Is this the same as somebody shows up to a church and say "father I would like to give you two millions dollars in cash and jewelry, please put it to good use". The priest would say "I don't want to know" Does this cleanse the money?
It’s not at all difficult to conclude if players benefit from their coaches having extra information to make better game plans.
This is wildly disrespectful to coaches all across the world. Of course coaching matters. And if coaching matters than having the coach cheat matters.

It does not matter what someone else does or does not do. It's just an excuse for ones caught red handed and been doing for years on in. It finally caught up to them. Coaches thought by cheating it would help until its caught and it no longer helps. They had spies in stadiums that were caught by USA and asked to leave twice before they did. This was on-going because they got away with it until they didn't. This is only about Team Canada Soccer not the NFL or whomever else. They knew the rules and should withdraw. China has also gotten away with bad testing not long ago and the Olympics committee let them still complete. Though one of ours years ago took grass and got like a year or more suspension. Worse is spying by a long shot unless its performance enhancement.
I was unaware that watching the opposition teams practices was not allowed, however, FIFA penalizing the team by 6 points in the group stage is absolutely overkill, and FIFA banning the coaches for only one year! The coaches are the ones that should be penalized hard not the players! Now one has to wonder how many countries/coaches have been doing this for years!
It was not overkill. Canada was damn lucky to not get sent home immediately. There are consequences to cheating. If it’s proven that drones were used around the Olympics, Canadian women should be stripped of their gold medal!!
Coaches are part of the team. They use illegal gotten data to help win and keep their jobs for a long time. Money is really the issue here by coaches. They win and they are in. You can not be in the other teams huddle or practices which are not allowed period. This is spying.

That being said. Coaches are part of a Team. They give instructions based on what they know about the other team by illegally spying by drone and also in the stadium asked to leave twice while changing to another seat until security came by a 2nd time and demanded they leave. Person even said they were with the Canada team. USA knew they were spying on them but tried to lighten it since they were working with Canada on the World Cup coming up. They have been caught and still did it afterwards. Not learning from it and now its out in the open and looks pretty bad to the world.

What pisses me off the most is how she literally burned the team, the athletes that worked their butts off to get to where they are and that has now been tarnished. No chance. And that 2012 spectacle was disgusting, but not because of the ref; it was disgusting because of the whining and poor sportsmanship, during and after, by the players. I disliked the CWT from that point on, and I'm not the least bit surprised or upset that this scandal has occurred.
Now it makes sense why the Canadian women won the 2021 Olympic gold medal, and the men did very well in the recent Copa America.
