  • I fee like it's been a while since I've been to Burrum Heads! This beach has it all; mud flats and offshore reefs and sea grass plains... it sure makes for a fun lineup of shells to find! I really loved it all; the bivalves, the oysters, the volutes, top shells, and of course, a very cute Baler Shell. It's still a baby, really, they can still grow so much larger!! Thanks for watching!~
    Next up: Hervey Bay for the afternoon shelling session (stay tuned)!
    Let me know which ones were your favourites ;D and if you enjoyed this and want to see more shell finding videos, I'd appreciate a like or a comment. I read all of them and try to reply when I can. You have no idea how much of a smile you guys put on my face. Thanks everyone!

    Oh I do like the sea urchins when they aren’t all brown and goopy looking! The clam with the blue top…that was joined in the beginning was super pretty. The propeller arc is always cool to see. The Bailor shell…wow! Just wow!❤

      G'day Green Thumb Gardener 👋🏻☘️❤️ Ahhh yes, I feel like I should have been pickier about sea urchins when I first started going to this beach; I wonder if I turned people off of the videos but having the, uhhh, goopy ones on screen? Well, no changing it now! Oh the clam with the blue top 🎩 let's call him a surf clam; he's very dapper with the fancy blue colour 😲 they're a common on up there; I can pick em up all day! Still, they are so pretty to see joined like that, especially if you stack them together. Same with the Propeller Arcs too, actually wait, were you the one that said their always looked like bones to you?! I'm glad you think they're cool despite that 😂 The Baler was the cherry on top of the adventure this time 🤩 Thank you so much for watching the big trip 🥰

    Good morning, Maddie. The swollen wide-mouthed top shells is very lovely. The white zebra volute was the first for me. I liked the 2nd volute you found as well. The margarite is beautiful. The sea urchins are very nice.The Haynes turban was lovely. Love the bailer shell. I am going to order some sea urchins to make a hanging night light for my granddaughters. Thank you for another wonderful shelling adventure. I enjoy all the shells. I still can't pick a favorite. Have a wonderful day Maddie
    See you in the next video.

The Swollen Wide-mouthed Top Shell is always a fun shell to find, but the spikey one here was particularly nice 😁 and the white Zebra Volute was great 🦓 The Baler, Margarite, and Turban were so cool, and yesss, the urchins are just fantastic to find here. Did you end up ordering some urchins for your project? I think a hanging urchin light for your granddaughters will look lovely 😍 Thanks for watching 🥰

      G'day Melissa 👋🏻💖 Ohhh I think you picked the most colourful shells as the favourites today! As for the moon snail 🐌 with the cream eye, I've only just realized that I find them brown with a cream eye at this beach...the ones that are a 15 minute drive down the road are bright yellow instead. Huh, it took me too long to realize that! Must be the ecosystem here that influences that slight variation in colour 🤔 Thanks for watching 🥰

      G'day Oceanluvn Gal 👋🏻🌊💖 Hehe, I think that colourful yellow and orange Baler is a crowd pleased this time 🤩 I'm so glad that you enjoyed seeing it as well 😲! Also, yes, when I started to visit Hervey Bay (and beyond) I never would have guess that we'd see so many crazy-shaped bivalves like this??!! Oh do you have a soft spot for the urchins? I feel like this is probably a weird question, but can you find urchins in Canada? Some species do like cold water temperatures. Anyhoo! Thanks for watching 🥰

    • @oceanluvngal
      @oceanluvngal หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@SandCoffeeRocks Yes we do have sea urchins in Canada. Where I am, on the east coast of Canada, we only have sand dollar urchins and the Green sea urchin. The Green sea urchin species mainly live in feeding groups along deep edge kelp beds. It's really rare for intact ones to wash up on the beaches of Prince Edward Island, my home province, likely because their feeding area is too far offshore. I have found 4 small ones in 30+ years.

    • @SandCoffeeRocks
      @SandCoffeeRocks  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ohh interesting!! So the urchins don't mind the cold temperature in Canada too...we get a lot of urchins in South Australia and over in New Zealand (the southern waters are cold in this hemisphere); I guess it's because urchins don't have a typical nervous system, so they don't really feel temperatures like other animals do? Sand Dollar urchins are absolutely lovely, and the same with green urchins 🤩 I'm sorry to hear that you've found so few over such a long span of time 😧 Do you think that other beaches that are closer to the feeding grounds would have a higher chance of the urchins washing up intact? I'm sure you've already been to all the beaches around town though 😅 with a name like Oceanluvn Gal and all! But, for me over here, it's crazy how just this one beach has the urchins, but places 10-20 minutes up the road (either direction) will have none. Sometimes you just have to find that sweet spot! I hope you go to the beach this weekend (if the weather is fine) and find something lovely 💖

    • @oceanluvngal
      @oceanluvngal หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @SandCoffeeRocks That's what is like for sand dollars here. There can be hundreds washed up along 50m of beach but not one in either direction outside of that pocket. Green urchins are more commonly found on the beaches of our neighboring provinces that face the deeper, colder gulf waters. Some of our fishermen find them in their lobster traps, but they are alive so get tossed back, of course.

    I love all the beautiful flats!!! I loved all the sea urchins too! My favorite today (two of them) were the swollen wide mouthed top shell and the baler shell. ❤❤❤ Loved that little “camp” with all the toys and the big baler shell. Too cute. Thank you for another fun shelling adventure Maddie! Is this your good time of year for shelling? 🥰🥰🥰

    • @SandCoffeeRocks
      @SandCoffeeRocks  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      G'day Pam 👋🏻💖 Hehe, the flats were nice to come across; as I mentioned, I don't remember seeing this many of them at Burrum Heads 😲. Ohhhh I love your picks for the favourites; it lines up with mine 😁 I think the Swollen Wide-mouthed Top Shell should have been mentioned specifically as a favourite! Ohhhh yeah "camp" is a good word for it 😂 it looks a bit like a tent, but 100x more fun...I think that big old baler might have actually been used as a seat for a small child 😂 As to your question, I think a lot of people will say that winter shelling is the best, but honestly?? It doesn't matter?? I mean, look at my videos: they're all filmed within a few days to a few weeks of releasing them on TH-cam, and you can see from the shell display thumbnails that the shell finds are varied and consistently great all year round. I must admit though; I usually find the empty and glossy Arabian Cowries in the winter, but I just haven't had any luck with them this year 😕 I am going to the home beach less often this year after dropping from three videos per week to two, so I guess I'm potentially missing out because of it. Still, I must say that to avoid the ridiculous heat and summer/Christmas holiday crowds, then autumn, winter, and spring are the better seasons for shelling 🐚 Thanks for watching 🥰

Oh goodness yes, the cleaned urchins are just wonderful; I left behind the ones with spines and stuff inside 😅 I have enough of those at home that are still in the process of being cleaned by nature! @@SandCoffeeRocks Hi Maddie 🤗 yes I have seen sea urchins on the beaches down here in Tassie . Watching your videos has kindled an interest in them and from now on I will pick some up and see how I go with them . My son-in-law goes abalone driving sometimes and has given me 6 shells that I have in the garden for nature to do the hard work for me . I love the different colours your sea urchins are 😍😍, happy shelling 🐚🐚

    • @SandCoffeeRocks
      @SandCoffeeRocks  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ohhhh exiting!!! I know that the southern waters around Vic and SA have these adorable little ball shaped urchins (I don't remember their name) so maybe you get that kind too? They are lovely colour variations ranging from green, to pink, to purple, and even red and cream! They are a bit gross to clean, and I haven't really mentioned a good way to solve that (a few people have suggested hydrogen peroxide, but I'm too lazy 😅) but maybe you can also find some intact ones that are cleaned by nature! Oh, but you wouldn't want to use anything harsh on a shiny shell like an Abalone; the garden may be best for those! How incredible for you son to send you some! Tell him to keep an eye out for Wonder Cowries around Tassie... They're a deep water shell though, so maybe it won't pop up. They're one of my favorite Australian shells, though!

      G'day Jan 👋🏻💖 Those Hammer Oysters are crazy cool, right? They're so different! Ahhh, about the spines; I'm not too worried about them while I'm at the beach or travelling, it's removing the teeth and gutting the stinky urchins that I care about not having to deal with. The already cleaned ones that don't have spines are great, but the cleaned out insides are the true appeal to them!! Also, and I guess it sounds crazy(?) but I just don't have time to de-spine and clean out a bunch of urchins while I'm up north; my day feels a little go go go to get everything done by the time I want to leave with my haul of shells 🚗 all up, it's a 13 hour day of driving, short breaks, shelling, and videoing! Oh, sea urchins can only be seen by residents of the coasts of the Seas of the Arctic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, washing Russia. In the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, which are located not far from me, sea urchins are not found, and in general the fauna in them is much poorer than in other seas, because these are seas with low salinity and not all sea inhabitants can live in such conditions.

      G'day Roxann 👋🏻🏖️ It just came through once...sometimes TH-cam is a little ehhh about working properly 😅 Ohh the flats are always lovely and red here; I think I may even go back on the weekend to find more! As for the big Baler, there wasn't anyone in that area at the time; on the weekends, it's the "busiest" here, I saw 6 people over several hours! Love the quiet shelling up there while the weekends are busy at home. As for how they found it, I'd say that the most likely scenario is that it was collected off of the mud flats further out from the shore. I can walk out there, but I might find only a few shells over the day, and that doesn't quite make the 30-40 per episode (or more for the single big mangrove episode) that I like to do at Hervey Bay. Someone I know called the mudflats "high risk, high reward...or no reward" which says it all for me! Anyhoo, thanks for watching 🥰

      G'day Nelly 👋🏻💖 The weather has been glorious lately 🤩 I hope the weather has likewise been good for you this week? I love your favorites list 😍 I knew you'd pick a moon snail - I only show the shiny bladder and sordid moon snails 🐌 because I'm spoiled for choice! Ohhh only one sea urchin 🤔 that's better than no sea urchins 😉 I think I've said this before, but finding urchin will really depend on if the beach has nearby sea grass or kelp beds for them to feed on while alive 🤔 I can't seem to reliable find urchins at any other beaches here. Ahhh and the final favourite is the BIG Baler 🤩 it was a big shell; I was struggling to lift it with my left hand 😅 As for your question, hmmm, probably just the really old, faded, and broken shells are the ones I never want to take, or shells with goopy bits still in them. All shells have their own beauty, so a fresh one will always look nice. But hmmm, off the top of my head, I'm not that interested in collecting Leafy Oysters or Pacific/Beautiful Jewel Boxes... I like the joined some sometimes, but they have to be really, really pretty for me to keep them! I do have a few jewel boxes that I like, but I think I've only ever kept one that I found (it was extra ruffly). What about you, are there any shells that you love to ignore?

      @@SandCoffeeRockshiiii Maddie, ah weather in here kinda weird, rain but in few min hot,in the next few min rain again 😅
      Yoooshhh Maddie,u give me so many choices to be my fav in this video,and of course the shinny mr.moon
      Yes,i remember u said how to find the sea urchin,but as i see, i think beach in here isn't the habitat of it. So maybe my sea urchin was from another part of Borneo.
      Aha,for me, sometimes i still take the broken one if sooooo rare to find it here.
      Tbh, idk how to say it properly 😅, I'm not a fan of pin shell or razor shell (so often i find them here,but i just ignore them😂)

      G'day Reet 👋🏻💖 Yep, Hammer Oyster is right 👍🏻 They're super weird, right?? They almost don't look like a shell, but maybe more like a bone? I didn't find a joined one this time, but it was still a pleasure to collect and show everyone 😁 Thank you so much for watching 🥰
