This is a great movie... and it does not take the Lord's name in vain as movies of today do. I saw this as a kid, so thanks to you Wm. T.S. for letting me see this great classic.

Classic movies you can learn so much from, not like the waste of junk today .
From today's standards this isn't the fines piece of cinematic art, but for me it is still the best adaptation of the novel. I grew up with it as a kid. Watched it over and over. There's just something about this movie, which the 1992 does not have.
The 1990s version is so depressing to me. I tried watching it a second time not too long ago and remembered why I didn’t like it. So dark and depressing.
I have seen this movie as a kid and have also read the book twice. It is a wonderful movie as well as the Daniel Day Lewis movie which I've seen three times. An excellent story of a long gone era. I don't know which one I like the best.
try Hawkeye 1990's tv series on Prime. Probably the best version it's got to feel like this one here

The scene where the school teacher sings '"Amazing Grace" to save his scalp is a real anachronism. The song was written about 40 years after the French and Indian War by William Wilberforce.

@@toosiyabrandt8676 Yes you are correct about who authored the song, but John Newton's first volume of Hymns was published in 1779 and his second one in 1836. So Dennis has a point. However, I do not expect any movie or TV show to be realistic, or historically accurate any more than I would expect it to stick to the book. It is strange to me that a show that I once watched on TV, should now seem so anti-christianity and overly preachy. But then, I quit watching TV about 25 years ago and if I need to know anything that is news I can read about it.

My family was around at this time, this movie means allot to me, l know the story of my early family.
I really enjoyed this story. It was sad but it seemed so real. Thank you for posting it. We have so many channels on TV but none that I would want my grandchildren to watch.

I especially loved the respect and understanding afforded Native Canadians and their culture. Very powerful.
At so many levels superior to the later (Day-Lewis) film, though the latter has many virtues.
BS, the British instigated the Mohawks-Iroqouis to do a Genocide on the Algonquin tribes AND THEN THE BRITISH SETTLED THE MOHAWKS TO HARRASS THE FRENCH CANADIANS, same as happened with the Rohyngas which were sent to Burma by the British to massacre Hindus and Buddhists the British had the Mohawks massacring the Hurons, as they couldn't defeat Chief Pontiacs brave Algonquin warriors they infected them with blankets fro chickenpox sick.
Impossible to understand yhow you would consider this film even on the same planet as the day Lewis film. as far as the acting and authenticity are concerned it’s a typically low rent 1970s misunderstanding of the Indian and the white battles in North America at that time. Whoever wrote the script probably shouldn’t be forgiven either. However the 1937 film is best but not by far.

The Last of the Mohicans: A Narrative of 1757 written by James Fenimore Cooper in 1826 is one of his Leatherstocking Tales (The Deerslayer, The Last of the Mohicans, The Pathfinder, The Pioneers, and The Prairie). The material was enough for a 22 episode syndicated TV series in 1994-95 starring Lee Horsley & Lynda Carter.

Steve Forrest ( brother of Dana Andrews) was my cousin in the Speed family. I love this movie.
The scene from 1:30:10 onwards , and the tribute that Chingachgook pays to his son Uncas is so full of wisdom and truth and heart wrenching. For me , it was the highlight of the movie

Not the Daniel day Lewis version I was looking for, but watched it anyway 👍
This is probably the most faithful version of the book. Most other movies make Hawkeye a romantic lead, and instead, his role in the book, was more of a bridge between the English and the frontier ways, Mohicans.
I thought the thought the 1992 version was a joke, designer buckskins and perfect hair. Mann was more concerned about the look than the substance.
@@csmith5420 - according to many - the BBC tv series of 1971 is more faithful to the novel - and the silent film of 1920 is also more faithful - in both of those - the attraction is between Uncas and Cora - as it is in the novel
this film omits the battle at the fort and it's infamous outcome - important to its author JF Cooper

I met Steve forest in Cornwall, he was making a film in Charles town in 1980 . Very nice man, and a very good actor.

I spent my whole life loving Daniel Day-Lewis, but Forrest is such an appealing Hawkeye, and how I imagine him to be.

I live about an hour from where they shot the majority of the film. Pipe Springs still looks the exact same (the fort)

Great movie!!! It was a pleasant and totally unexpected surprise because I thought the Daniel Day Lewis version was the only one worthwhile watching. Quite a difference, but an interesting other perspective and not as old-fashioned as one might expect when dated 1977. Really enjoyable...great stuff... Thanks for uploading!

It's a pretty good version of "The Last of the Mohican's".
I remember the young woman who portrayed Alice (actress Jane Actman) from a very early episode of the Partridge Family in which she played Keith's (David Cassidy) "feminist" girlfriend Tina.
Many people know that David Cassidy passed away, but sad to say, Jane Actman also recently passed away on October 30, 2018.
She is survived by her husband Gene Castle.
Jane and Gene were childhood friends and married nearly 50 years when Jane passed away at the age of 69.
My condolences go out to Gene. I've read that Jane was the love of his life.
Little is known about Jane except she grew up around the theater. Her father worked for the theater and her mother was a dancer/dance instructor.
Everything I have been able to find regarding Jane is that she was a very kind person and all who worked with her were quite fond of her.
I was only 6 years old when I first saw Jane on the Partridge Family, but even at that age I thought she was so cute and adorable.
She appeared in many television show's from the late 1960's through the 1970's.
She played Paul Lynde's eldest daughter on the short lived "Paul Lynde Show".

Patricia Henry, yes you and many others liked the Daniel Day Lewis version. But there were many discrepancies and narratives which were edited out making it a romantic love story . The original version acted by Steve Forrest tells the story like it is. Uncas was never in love with any white woman. It is history not a love story.
The col complains about the weak singing man throughout the movie, but he sits there, no longer restrained and calmly watches the singing man get killed without interfering at all then stands up and walks over to his dead body without any difficulty.
Interesting observation. But I think the idea was that his blood circulation was cut off and he had not yet recovered until it was too late. I don't think they fleshed out the torture he had undergone to show the justification for his inaction. But the fact that he was incapacitated making it necessary for the preacher to defend the red coat should be sufficient to close the resolve your observation.
What? A version that I don't have? I have the Silent, I have the Harry Carry Serial, I have the 1930s one, I have the Lon Cheney TV show, I have the Hawkeye TV show, I have the Animated version, and of course I have the 1993! Now I'll be looking for this one! This was one of my favorite books as a Kid.

so glad I found this. When I was in my teens I watched this movie every year when the tv-station would show it during our Easter holiday. After that I never saw it again but could never forget it.
Funny thing is...I always thought it was older because it was a black/white movie....but now I see it in color I realize that at that time we had a b/w tv set :-)

In the book, one plot element is the older daughter is the daughter of Monroe by a woman of African heritage. The younger daughter is from an English wife.

Steve Forrest is a way better Hawkeye than Daniel Day Lewis, though he is still too leading-man-handsome to be true to the books. I just finished "The Pathfinder," and what a great book that was. Despite my somewhat negative comments below, I have really come to love J. Fenimore Cooper's writing.
I guess Natty Bumpo isnt supposed to be handsome.

Steve Forrest acted in (I think 5) episodes of Gunsmoke, playing a bad guy except for a very fine one titled "The Widowmaker," where he came to Dodge with a beautiful wife to give up being a gunman. I watch this because he is in it...this actor, like a handful of others, he had a screen presence and being a fine actor he also had that great voice and gifted with such attributes as a Bill Holden or James Garner had.
I loved the Gunsmoke series...first 9 years of Matt/Chester esp...& I often thought how the GS ratings wd have stayed up there as when Dennis Weaver was in it (ratings went south when the "festus hagun" character was in it continually and he took the show over mostly, the last several years...a shame for sure Arness was off a lot, finally CBS had waited far too long...wow, forgive the goings on, I love good stories since a small kid, books and film...anyway, had Steve F came on when Dennis left in 1964-65 as Matt's deputy or even Burt Reynolds place the ratings wd have been up there...odd how the casting people and others can ruin a series...never ask the true fans about what they'd like. I read where that Curtis and "festus' brother newly" (Buck Taylor) could never get serious full time work...so GS went to the dogs for last 11 years except for when Matt did a solo show, no festus or newly the 2 stooges in it...never can I watch one on TH-cam when they are in a show more than 5 minutes...awful "non actors" & never funny or any thing but irritating.

Well first thing to learn is that we don't like the name, American or Indians, because we are not Indian and America was named after an Italian who stole the land like Colombus. You can call us indigenous or even better, call us by our tribes if you know them. I can inform on a lot aboout them, as I myself am an indigenous person, from the Potawatomi and Iriquois.
@@stanleeajrdabeatles1523 I believe American Indian or Native American expresses much more respect towards those to whom they are referring by those outside the indigenous nations. They didn't name the teams "Indigenous" because it is not truly a fierce nor formidable description. And indigenous just means/connotation "a people who were conquered".
But of course, technically, you are correct. And of course from your perspective, you are correct. But a sincere compliment is still a compliment no matter how awkward it may be perceived.

GRANDMOTHER is of the CHEROKEE native American race a M/SGT I worked with in USAFE in UK had Native American heritage !! and... my AUNT (same one ) her original hubby BILL MATTHEWS is married to a Native AMERICAN woman !!! one of my cousins was briefly married to NA guy!!! thanks for input !!!!

The setting is the "French and Indian War" part of the Seven year War, a true world war.
This grew on me/well worth watching if you hunger more for the First Wild Frontier!

It's a good movie. Was a bit lost at the beginning of the film. I'd like to know more into the spirit dude who was labelled mad. Felt that part was left up in the air. I feel like the ending could have tied in better with the beginning narrative to give the start more direction. There are life lessons taught in the film which any great film aught to have.
