Here's another toxic tiktok trend that NEEDS TO STOP. I can't with it. Its where a bunch of tiktok girls and boys and guys use a filter that makes them lighter and its very uncomfortable to sit through.

this is ridiculous! As someone with brown skin, I've battled the "light skin is beautiful trauma" for a long time. Most of these people didn't realize that the filter made their face look more chiseled. Those people should just focus on maintaining a healthy weight and drink water for clear & healthy skin. Honestly can't believe people started comparing nationalities.

    • @zhangqiling8086

Same here, even my own mother tried hard to make me bleach my skin and I kept refusing. I had acne issues, but I started properly taking care of my skin in a healthy way that won't damage it nor change it's color and now my face is clean and smooth and I feel super comfortable with it. Yet after all that my mother and some other people will keep suggesting to use lightning creams, making it seem as my face is still flawed somehow...

The filter also erased the imperfections like acne, pores and skin texture. That's kinda what made them think it made them look good. Not the lighter skin.
But all these tiktok videos just propagate the idea that "white" is pretty.

I know I am really late to this comment but I have brown skin as well, and I was playing a game with my best friend and she told me “to make my character skin lighter cause it was too dark and didn’t look good” . I was so hurt and to this day I still think about her comment..

@@Daisy_518 You're right! I kinda missed that part about skin texture.
I've grown to fall in love with my tan skin tone. The only thing I try to care about and monitor is pigmentation. Because, usually pigmentation is a sign of hormonal imbalance or if you are developing insulin resistance.
Tiktok is ruining a generation of people with all these unrealistic expectations.

As someone who's skin tone is comparable to printer paper, one of the most disheartening things about my time in Southeast Asia was people acting as if my fair skin was an achievement. All I could think whenever they complimented me was, "Don't you realize your dark skin is just as beautiful?" This type of thinking can also be downright dangerous because it encourages the use of skin bleach (yes, it is exactly what it sounds like).

Mhm, I’m a Chinese person with very fair skin, so whenever I meet relatives or family acquaintances, there’d always be 3-4 comments on my pale complexion. I mean, yeah, you can compliment people, but skin colour should be no different than hair colour! You’re allowed to have preferences and stuff, some aspects of different appearances may attract you more than others, but holding certain skin tones on a pedestal, or anything regarding someone’s physical form for that matter, is just weird. It’s understandable that countries may have varying beauty standards, but heavily judging people by those beauty standards, or even worse- associating it to race, crosses the line of which is acceptable. Being drawn to some things more than others is different from treating what you don’t like with a prejudice. I feel absolutely terrible when I hear my own parents associate dark skin to dirtiness, terrible when they associate black people to dirtiness. It’s not only skin either, racial prejudice leaks into all facial features- I still remember when my classmates in elementary school would pull back their eyelids around me, saying ‘look, I’m Asian!’ even though I myself actually have hooded almond eyes.
I wish that we could see everyone as just people, humans, devoid of the barriers caused by racial differences- when we could talk about where we’re from, comment on our appearances without associating our entire ancestral backgrounds with such things.

As a person who have a friend that's a Filipino (from the Philippines) I've heard her complaining about people caring about skin more than anything. She told me her mom always tell her: "If you're white, you're pretty. That's why you should use whitening lotion or soap so you'll feel beautiful. The society cares about skin colors and not about your personality or how beautiful you are, if you're not white, you're ugly." That's the sad truth about this world, huh..

Dude some were literally flaring their nostrils and pouting weirdly, like saying that lighter skin is better wasn’t enough racism for the day.
Afrocentric features are just as beautiful and valid as eurocentric features, wether that be skin color, noses, lips, eyes, hair, body etc.
And about the dude saying that it’s just preference, when your ‘preferences’ literally say white people look better than non white people, then your preferences are ✨ racist✨ and need to be treated through some self reflection to cure that internalized racism.

I'm from the Philippines where most people are born brown but bleach their skin to be whiter. For me i'm blaming the mainstream media putting out commercials about soaps that'll make your skin lighter bc ur dark complexion is "ugly" so come buy our soap kinda thing. Or show business not casting people with darker complexion because that's "not beautiful" or when they do, they take the role of the "ugly" friend. Also, I've literally watched tv shows before where they insinuate the main character went from ugly to beautiful (dark to white). Because of that, people in my country are brainwashed thinking dark is no-no and white is a big yes. I have dark complexion and I got bullied because of it. I can't even count how many times people called me the N-word! I was literally bullied for being brown in a place where people are supposed to be brown lmao.

Also when they don’t have a filter, they look sad and uninterested. When they put the filter on, they suddenly shoot from another angle, they smile, looking happy, have a better hairstyle ...
In fact, the skin color on this filter makes absolutely no difference, the real difference is everything else ...
Strange how they only notice the color of the skin as a change ...

No one even looks like the same person after this filter. It doesn’t just change skin color, but it slims your nose and face as well if you look closely. This app is completely racist and even labels certain features as ugly, which is terrible

@@lilysbox2139 I guess that's the point of that trend, there are filters that do the same without changing the skin color. This may sound dumb but people with light skin also did the trend, of course, their skin didn't change but all of the factions of their face did. which i guess that's the main point.
Also, you need to take into consideration that this is a Chinese app and we all know that light skin in Asia is a big part of their beauty standard (and it doesn't come just from a racist point of view but it has a historical reason, having light skin in the past meant you didn't do labor meaning you didn't get exposed to the sun meaning you were part of the "royalty/high class" and not the working one so it would be more a classism thing than racist)

    • @totallyawakeandlistening
      @totallyawakeandlistening 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

The filter doesn't change your face, the person does it, it's the beauty settings, you can change your face and your skin color, it's a 60/40 percent of fault since the settings are there but you don't need to use them, the people use the settings and change their faces to "ugly" (they could've just changed their skin color but instead changed their face to the trends look, I don't think all of the people are like them where "before" the filter). Sorry if it's confusing, english isn't really my main language.

The thing is, the filter doesn’t only change their skin colour but also erases imperfections/ retouches face features. So of course they think they look better but it’s not because the skin colour has changed, it’s the fact that their face has been retouched. But they associates it with the skin colour change because that’s the biggest change they can see.
It’s a really manipulative way to have someone associate lighter skin with beauty. You’re completing right in saying it’s perpetuating extremely toxic stereotypes.

As a Mexican American myself, I can attest Latin America has had a huge internalized racism/colorism problem. Like you said, this is directly because of society and our histories of colonialism, and people started believing that lighter and Eurocentric features are “better”. There was even a saying that if a lighter skinned person marries a darker skinned person when they have kids it’ll “mejorar la raza” (“improve the race”), which is absolutely vile and it pisses me off just writing it.
Thankfully, it’s changing SOMEwhat in more recent times, with more Indigenous, Afro-Latino, etc representation and pride... but as we can see from these TikToks, there’s still a longgg way to go..
