For all those commenting on how old everything looks, try to enjoy how beautiful the infrastructure is too. Sure the system could use a good repair, cleaning and upgrading of inefficient equipment. However, the stations and even sections of the tracks themselves, are full of ornamentation that we only reserve for the most prestigious projects today. And in addition, I guarantee that they managed to do it all at a taxpayer cost that would equal to significantly less than the most utilitarian designs we have come to expect today. Great video!

I moved away from NYC in 1988. I used to ride this train out to 168th St., in the 70's. i168th St was the last stop. Now I see how it goes underground for the lasr two stops. Thanks for posting, I feel like I have rode the "new" system out in Jamaica now!

Just a tidbit. If you look VERY CAREFULLY on full screen mode, you'll see the switch points move at 20:07, which will put the train on to the express track. About 4 seconds later you see the signals up ahead on the express track turn green, followed a second later by the signals in front of the train turning green, clearing him to proceed.
24:50 One of the few crossings at grade on the system. Nice action there! The trains veering to the left climb up to what was once the Myrtle Avenue El. Southbound trains could either take this current route, or continue on the abandoned structure you see above. This route is one of the oldest on the system. Past 121st Street, the line remained elevated to around 168th, I believe. That was torn down and the line rerouted to the Jamaica subway. The Eastern Division also cannot accommodate the 75ft train cars, like the R44s, 46s and 68s.
I live in London and after watching this I must say, as much as it gets on basically everyone's nerves most of the time for various reasons, I have a newfound appreciation for the London Underground. The speed of these NYC trains is frustrating at best, rage inducing at worst. I couldn't fathom having to ride it on a daily basis. The slow speed is due to the idiotic 'skip stop'scheme operating on a single track. Each train must maintain a very long distance between it and the leading train.It may reduce crowding but does little for speed.
In fairness you're looking at a route that is notoriously slow. The Z in particular is just a partner to the J in a skip-stop pattern during rush hours that doesn't really accomplish anything other than slowing all the trains down; the similar 9, which was a counterpart to the 1, was eliminated 20 years ago but the Z soldiers on. On top of that, the Williamsburg Bridge has had draconian speed restrictions in place since an accident in 1995. In fact similar restrictions systemwide stemming from that one incident are the main thing that makes speed between stations one of the system's greatest weaknesses.
Bro us in Canada have to stand in freezing cold weather. And being from Ottawa, we don’t have an adequate subway system, we only have one line. And the buses here take like so long. So yeah, we have it worse here, ngl.

This is great. I love going to New York, getting on a subway train with no particular destination, and getting off at any random spot. Explore a little above ground, then getting o the train again and doing the same thing.
I've been doing that all my life. Started when I was 10, I would take the bus to Manhattan and then ride the subway all over. My parents never knew what I was doing. That was now 50 years ago. I still go on random train rides; a Metrocard has always been the cheapest form of entertainment for me. That will end in a few years, as I will retire and move to the sunny west, where there aren't any subways, only the occasional Amtrak passenger train. I will miss my subways.
if you saw that little yellow bar at 18:20 lower and dont know what it is, i'll explain. When the signal isn't showing green, that bar, called a trip arm, sticks up a certain height. If a train were to pass that signal, the bar would hit a device on the train called a "trip cock". this trip cock applies the emergency brakes when struck by the trip arm. this system is sort of enforcing a speed limit in a way. in NYC, the trip arm can be on the right or left, depending on the "division". lettered trains have the trip on the left, and numbered trains have it on the right. the trip cock is mounted on the bogie corner, and some rolling stock have a trip cock on both sides. the reason they are painted yellow is for evidence in the case of a train striking it.
The R32s are still running? That is so neat! I grew up riding these classics (although mostly the Redbirds) and am glad they're still cruising the rails. America could build some tough, solid trains back in the day. Saddening how much things have changed.

Great video, beautiful quality. The main thing I noticed is how unbelievably slow this train is. The European/UK subways go about 70-80kph between stops and this one never gets above 30. Must be painful to have to commute at this pace.
A lot of the open air section, especially the second half doesn't look too dissimilar to certain parts of South London, except that if you replaced the elevated structure with a brick viaduct and had less stations. The tenement buildings are all similar and it's a roughly similar sort of cityscape. Love the storm, a real atmosphere there :)
What a nostalgic trip for me. Left NYC in '71. If this is the correct train, I remember taking it to Gertz. Those were the days. Especially loved the ancient trains run on the Lexington Ave Line to New Lotts, w/the brake in the passenger cabin. The smell of smoke and heat was always present. They always had overheated seats too. Your butt would fry. Wonder if any of those relics are still around, as I plan on taking my wife from San Francisco there within the year.

We still have the R68s from the 80s on some lines but most of the lines are now taken over by the R168s which is the newest trains to the fleet but I am sure you can still see some R32s on the A and C line and a hand full of R42s are still around also.

Only 24 minutes into the ride and I already can say I love this. It's got everything and some things the Chicago videos don't: major bridge across the river and rain that makes for great visual effects. The signals are easy to spot and to get what's going on. Suggestion *** Not being a New Yorker I would like to see the names of the stops posted on the video like the CTA does. The guy announcing the stops can't be understood, and I like knowing and following where in the city I am. Thanks Fan Railer. I'm going to watch this all the way through. Can you do one with snow?
This reminds me when when I was a kid back in the late sixties in New York Brooklyn my dad used to take me and my sister to Coney Island and me and my sister would stand in the front of the train looking out the window. just like the video thanks for posting this 👍🏻
As a visitor, I felt intimidated and overwhelmed by the whole experience like a cow shoved onto a cattle truck then I ran into a fellow Canadian turned NYC resident. She made me feel right at home in that concrete wilderness. Now it's like riding a C-Train in Calgary or Vancouver Sky Train.

I rode this line to visit my dad who lived on Bushwick Avenue; it was a scenic urban route. Also a good shortcut to East NY Junction Station vs. staying on the A train.
An excellent & fascinating video -- many thanks! I hope the MTA has since cleaned up & renovated that Chambers St. station. Its neglect to utter degradation is a disgrace not only to subway patrons but to international visitors who may perceive this as an example of urban life in the U.S.

The NYC system looks really interesting. For some reason I like elevated lines... in Germany we have them too in Hamburg and Berlin (and those are pretty old too, from the 1910's), but it feels a lot different.

Most of this is Brooklyn and Queens. Manhattan, which you're probably thinking of, can't really be seen from the Subway in this direction because it's underground and then they are going away from it.
Safety! So many incidents have occured (derailments, wrecks) because of too much love for speed. On the Williamsburg Bridge, for example, they had to slow it down since they had a very bad accident in 1995 where one train collided with another! We have to think about people's safety first! Would you rather get home late and in one piece, or early and mangled?
Is it because of a love for speed or because of a run-down, ill maintained system that's screaming for help? Like sven replied, there are many system as old that run way faster. Heck, even such a behemoth of a system as tokyo's still has better running speed than NYC.
The São Paulo metro opened in 1974. The NYC Subway goes back to the 1800s and wasn't centrally planned. Virtually the entire system is ancient and they can't just replace the whole thing, so they have to work within the confines of whatever the 19th century planners came up with.
Rocky's Trains poor service patterns that cause unnecessary delays and interlining that is excessive many letter lines simply need reroutes and service would improve but that would only go so far
Ughhh, the J/Z skip stop is useless... need to Run the J train local all times and have the Z run express from Marcy to Broadway Junction... Timers also kill train speeds for no reason...
At Myrtle Avenue-BWAY you have to worry about the (M) switching to Metropolitan Avenue, the (J) switching at the local track to BWAY/Junction, and the (Z) staying on the EXP track to the aforementioned station... That's too much time to waste.

The skip-stop makes sense between 121st Street and Eastern Pkwy. but I agree that there should be real express service between Eastern Pkwy. and Marcy Avenue.

The thing goes so damned slow it might just as well have stopped at every station and picked up/dropped off to save people waiting for a so-called 'stopping' train. And why did it take the 'express' track and then have to wait for a train (on the slow track) it had overtaken, to catch up again, pass, and turn left across in front of it? Yes, the end of the line was 168th St. and Jamaica Avenue. I imagine the curves in the vicinity of Crescent Street limit car length.

Oslo’s "subway" mostly travels @50 km/h. Some of the newer stretches in the east have stretches wre 70 km/h is used.

The trains used be much faster. After an accident on the bridge they lowered the speeds of the rains.

I Used to Take This Train Out To Queens Blvd, In The 70's early 80's and I Was 3 Stop From 168th Street. Back Than It Was QJ Train And Rush KK Train.

An excellent & fascinating video -- many thanks! I hope the MTA has since cleaned up & renovated that Chambers St. station. Its neglect to utter degradation is a disgrace not only to subway patrons but to international visitors who may perceive this as an example of urban life in the U.S.
This video just proved one thing to. I was in NYC back in the early 90's

They are renovating Chambers St, Thank God. I'm not sure when it will be done but they've covered up all of the crusty sections. I always feel like I'm in a murder scene when I'm there.

In my entire adult life, there have been only two occasions that I've driven in the City. This video is a reminder of why I don't and likely never will. It's getting as bad down here in southeastern Virginia

The NYC system looks really interesting. For some reason I like elevated lines... in Germany we have them too in Hamburg and Berlin (and those are pretty old too, from the 1910's), but it feels a lot different.

NYC subway was built in 1904 while the first subway in China was built in 1969. Also majority of the subway system in China are build after 2000.

Most of this is Brooklyn and Queens. Manhattan, which you're probably thinking of, can't really be seen from the Subway in this direction because it's underground and then they are going away from it.

Safety! So many incidents have occured (derailments, wrecks) because of too much love for speed. On the Williamsburg Bridge, for example, they had to slow it down since they had a very bad accident in 1995 where one train collided with another! We have to think about people's safety first! Would you rather get home late and in one piece, or early and mangled?
Strange, because subways in London, Paris, Rome and Berlin all tend to go faster while not having those safety problems
Is it because of a love for speed or because of a run-down, ill maintained system that's screaming for help? Like sven replied, there are many system as old that run way faster. Heck, even such a behemoth of a system as tokyo's still has better running speed than NYC.

The São Paulo metro opened in 1974. The NYC Subway goes back to the 1800s and wasn't centrally planned. Virtually the entire system is ancient and they can't just replace the whole thing, so they have to work within the confines of whatever the 19th century planners came up with.
Rocky's Trains poor service patterns that cause unnecessary delays and interlining that is excessive many letter lines simply need reroutes and service would improve but that would only go so far

Ughhh, the J/Z skip stop is useless... need to Run the J train local all times and have the Z run express from Marcy to Broadway Junction... Timers also kill train speeds for no reason...
At Myrtle Avenue-BWAY you have to worry about the (M) switching to Metropolitan Avenue, the (J) switching at the local track to BWAY/Junction, and the (Z) staying on the EXP track to the aforementioned station... That's too much time to waste.

The skip-stop makes sense between 121st Street and Eastern Pkwy. but I agree that there should be real express service between Eastern Pkwy. and Marcy Avenue.

I do really like the Z train because it seems the train stock and destinations are best.
The thing goes so damned slow it might just as well have stopped at every station and picked up/dropped off to save people waiting for a so-called 'stopping' train. And why did it take the 'express' track and then have to wait for a train (on the slow track) it had overtaken, to catch up again, pass, and turn left across in front of it? All looks rather 'third world' to me.
Ikr that was so stupid how it waited for the slower train to pass.
