NTSB releases preliminary report on Baltimore bridge collapse

- Investigators probing the March collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore said in a preliminary report the cargo ship Dali experienced an electrical blackout about 10 hours before leaving the Port of Baltimore and yet again shortly before it slammed into the bridge and killed six construction workers. so the preliminary report is "I don't know". why am I not at all surprised?
Well, now they know it was a power trip, they just have to find out what caused the circuit breaker to trip.
This preliminary report is in line with the apparent root cause which is the unstable load sharing between the two generators that were on line as the ship approached the bridge. This unstable load sharing could be the result of operator error or a poor engineering design of the load share circuit. It is a complicated subject. I hope the NTSB can handle it.
Talk to engineers and you'll probably hear what I've heard. Clients do not want to spend money on safety, especially safety against an unlikely hazard. This bridge collapse looks just like that. Back when the bridge was built, the highway people did not want to plan for a huge boat hitting the bridge. Have you seen the collapse? That bridge went down like a wet noodle.
You read the NTSB report? Apparently there was bridge protection. The ship missed the protecting "dolphin" by just a few yards. An incredible series of bad luck. The report came with photos, go google it up, it was enlightening.
