@LucasLFGFerreira-Gomes No, what I mean is that there is no "right" or "wrong" aspect ratio. ALWAYS, however, we must consider WHICH DEVICE will reproduce what is created...
18 x 9 doesn't make anything "wider," it just crops (letterboxes) the full frame 16 x 9 ratio. Which is fine, if you want. Any aspect ratio is fine if it works the way the filmmaker thinks best. Screw trends.
The wider aspect ratio has a more cinematic feel, but fills less of the screen for most users. The wider aspect ratio is more of a short film vibe than everyday content

I would say this depends on audience and contents. For me, I got an 32:9 ultrawide monitor on my pc so I get less of the side black bars which I like :) But if the viewer only got a 16:9 monitor then they get top and bottom black bars, which can be more cinematic though, but not for everyone. And if the user is on mobile, then the question becomes what orientation they watch in. If they watch in portrait mode they will still get the same width of video, but the height will look smaller due to the aspect ratio in order to fit it on screen. So for shorter videos where the viewer might not get into the video enough to switch to landscape, this feels like it could be worse. But longer videos it might be nice. At the end of the day, which is better just depends :) The only thing I would say is, do NOT hardcode black bars through an entire video. If you do it for smaller parts that is fine. But doing it for an entire video looks horrible for wider screens cause then you get black bars on all sides. If you want a more cinematic experience, then changing aspect ratio to 21:9 (or something similar) as this video showed is the way to go!
I💯% agree with you! Just got the iPhone 16 Pro Max, watching videos in landscape mode and noticed there’s so much wasted space on the sides. So I searched the topic and yours was the first that came up. I get that some comments here are are saying in vertical iPhone mode there’s super minimal black bars but they’re way more noticeable in landscape. I have to squint to see video details in vertical mode, especially for filmmaking/camera comparison/tutorial videos. Phase out 16x9 for TH-cam videos 🙌
@1:42 when you change the sequence settings the top of screen is cropped off. Is that because youre in 18/9? I think aspect ratio comes down to style choice personally. Good tip though. Another tool in the belt for creatives.
I usually sit close enough to the screen so it fills almost all my vision, and due to the width to height ratio of my eyes, the 16:9 format feels pretty spot on for me. Chinese people and pot smokers probably prefer 21:9, while Chinese pot smokers probably need that ultrawide 32:9 ratio 😅
Maybe I am old but, smartphones and social media should not rule aspect ratio. Even if the black bars bother me I do prefer 16:9 for my everyday exports.
Still got black bars on my desktop in fullscreen. You didn't plan on somebody having an ultrawide with an aspect ratio of 21:9? Shows what you know. Ironically, ultrawides with 21:9 aspect ratio is becoming more popular. Probably more popular than this video I'd imagine.
I edit a 4k video in capcut of Forza Horizon 5 in 16:9 which was recorded in original (2560 × 1600) but black blocks appear on both sides and when I zoom in, the video gets cut. What should I do? Pls reply
If the original image has a resolution of 2560 x 1600 (16:10 aspect ratio), editing and exporting it in 16:9 will result in small black bars. To avoid this, it's best to maintain the original 16:10 aspect ratio for both editing and exporting. Also, exporting the video in 4K with the 2560 x 1600 resolution will lead to upscaling. It's important to be aware that 2560 x 1600 is not a 4K resolution. If you intend to upscale the video to 4K, it's recommended to export it at 3456 x 2160. This way, the original 16:10 aspect ratio will be preserved even in the upscaled 3456 x 2160 resolution. Keep in mind that a 16:10 video will display black bars on a 16:9 TV, but a 16:10 image will not show black bars on a 16:10 PC monitor. Most 16:10 monitors have a native resolution of 1920 x 1200. Additionally, many smartphones, such as the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, S24 Ultra, iPhone 14, or iPhone 15 Pro Max models, have an aspect ratio of 19.5:9, which is wider than 16:10. Therefore, displaying a 16:10 image on these phones will result in black bars. If the image's aspect ratio is not as wide as 19.5:9, some cropping may occur when viewing it on these phones.

Sean, you do some good content, but this one, you must have been running out of ideas. The aspect ratio needs to fit the app. 9:16 stories, YT 16:9 and other apps may support different aspect ratios. Anamorphic is good but fits few apps.

Love this! I've been using mostly 2:1 aka 3840:1920 to be able to use end screens as you said, and 3840:1624 for more anamorphic / cinematic effect on our short films ❤🔥
Trying this aspect ratio out in my next video. I got to say, It's a little bit weird editing videos this way, just not as familiar to the eye, but lets see how it turns out 😀
I'm not a TH-camr but am a producer -- and -- not at all concerned as a consumer. With a good number of excellent new films exploring narrower aspect ratios, I'm definitely leaning the opposite direction in my preferences. If 16x9 and even 4x3 is good enough for the Spielbergs, Wes Andersons and Academy award nominees out there.. I'm all for it, and love the increased emphasis on the vertical in these narrower frames.
Peter McKinnon did this a few years back. It did look better and made sense. I had totally forgotten about it after moving to Resolve. Thanks for the reminder 😉. appreciate it

This is proper 2:1 from yours truly. th-cam.com/video/KrP4pqo15co/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5IWukg02xO3wSYMZ You'll notice that my video fills the whole screen on a phone when in landscape.

My phone and ALL of my devices are 16x9, you have A LOT of black bars on your videos, because it was shot in 18x9. 1920x1080p,2560x1440p, 5120x2880 and 7680x4320p are the ONLY acceptable resolutions.
hmmm, and I just started uploading in a 4x3 aspect ratio. 😅
Me too 😂
Even this video I have black bars on sides. On my phone!

Ive never seen a phone that is 16x9 to be honest. And if you do want to use 16x9 the most common ratio would actually be 3840x2160
@@seankitching LOL I just noticed I skipped over 4k/ 3840x2160p, it was supposed to go before 5120x2880p/5k.
@@seankitching My current phone is the Razer Phone 2, I've put custom software on to it and its 2560x1440p/16x9, 120HZ, it also has a light up emblem/Razer logo on the back of the phone.
Okay so I was doing this with my videos for a while, and TH-cam wouldn’t let me add an end screen card to my videos because their end-screen is formatted to the 16:9 ratio.
What’s the work around?
Also this video still had the black bars on the side when I was watching horizontally on my phone, not sure why!
Although I don't agree with you, I'm glad that you're not an idiot who records videos vertically.
Aspect ratio itself conveys a message
can you show visualy how should it be before after
1:15
Sean, you do some good content, but this one, you must have been running out of ideas. The aspect ratio needs to fit the app. 9:16 stories, YT 16:9 and other apps may support different aspect ratios. Anamorphic is good but fits few apps.
Much of our audience is older 50 plus, and they are watching on TVs, witch is also 16 x 9. I get that this is great for phone but not all audiences are 90 percent phone. Larry
Thanx Bro ❤
This is good stuff. I noticed myself zooming to fill almost by default trying to get that immersive look-like I unconsciously prefer the 18:9 experience
I was literally having this conversation last week 😂 just about wanting to really take up all my screen real estate
I'm getting too old to figure things out. I just need to be told what to do. Thanks for telling me. It that applicable for other platforms? Actually, my project... adventure vids POV style with just my phone. "Full" aspect setting right? Trying to reach a balance that lets me film and enjoy. Not sure it can be done. I been trying for 20 yrs., never succeed, but as Mike would say... "let's give it a go". Thanks for the info "accent dude, it was very helpful". Now, if you can just tell me how to move my photos from Dropbox without upgrading. What a scam! Thanks again! 👴
love it THANK YOU
do you have sample/demo video i mean output with that aspect ratio
you just saw it lol
What a load of tosh, this is terrible advice! I'm now shooting in Open Gate or 1.43:1 aspect ratio because it's different and looks more like IMAX. It's a creative choice and I hope the black bars irritate the crap out of people. Screw what is trendy or what the viewers want, I make my content the way I want.
I thumbed up but If you make only for you, make your stuff Private. Or go open a candy store and only sell green beans.
Good job bro
16:10 actually .
18:9 is a remote control men i need height also
ce nem sabe oq vc ta falando amigo
I always watch TH-cam in full screen.
Love you and what you bring to the table man, keep it up!♥🤟
idk looks cheesy to me, also black bars on top and bottom
Interesting - definitely worth trying on my subject matter. Thanks
I guess I have been wrong my whole video career
Amazing , I love finding gems like this thanks man
Love this! I've been using mostly 2:1 aka 3840:1920 to be able to use end screens as you said, and 3840:1624 for more anamorphic / cinematic effect on our short films ❤🔥
Have you btw found where the sweet spot is to still be able to use end screens?
Broo, you blew my mind...
Terima lah kasih! Bak kata pakcik din daku
Disagree with several points.
I disagree with this. Heck, I'd even say you should shoot in 4:3 lol.
Thank you! great tip.
Makes sense . Thanks
Learned something today ❤❤❤
Subbed. Great content! This is great!
16:9 bros is it over?
I have tried this at times. It is nice to have that extra real-estate on the sides.
I've started cropping alot of photo's in 2:1 because I think the view on my phone in landscape at 2:1 looks great
How about dci 4k?
Peter McKinnon did this a few years back. It did look better and made sense. I had totally forgotten about it after moving to Resolve. Thanks for the reminder 😉. appreciate it
i don't like how 18:9 looks like
Bro your video still has black bars on the sides when in landscape on a phone. This is proper 2:1 from yours truly. th-cam.com/video/KrP4pqo15co/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5IWukg02xO3wSYMZ
You'll notice that my video fills the whole screen on a phone when in landscape.
Simply cutting off the top and bottom doesn't make your video wider.
Shoot in a 4:3 aspect ratio like I did, change your sequence to 3328x1664 and then slightly crop in to get the framing you want. Boom you've got a 2:1 aspect ratio that actually fills the phone screen.
Check out Chris Hau’s “Why you should stop shooting video in 16:9 aspect ratio”. He recommends 4:3. This resolution provides a more effective solution to editing horizontal video to vertical video.
nice one Sean..
