A Drill bit for 25 cents? I do so enjoy the work you do. I challenge you on the 25 cents drill bit though! No offense but this retired State Licensed General Contractor calls B.S.
This is supremely useful. I wish more craft/DIY channels would lay out exactly what you need before starting a new hobby. Sewing youtube is always surprising me with the tools I apparently don't have.
Quick tip for you on drilling a center hole that is actually centered: after you punch the center of the coin, drill a through-hole using a 1/8” drill bit then a 1/4” drill bit then your final drill bit. By stepping the sizes up, the hole will stay centered. I personally use the short, double ended 1/8” drill bits (available at Harbor Freight) to prevent any flexing of the thin shaft of traditional-length 1/8” drill bits.
Center is easy to find with a straightedge and a thin Sharpie, and easy to mark for drilling by using a prick punch. Prick punch, use ~ 1/8" bit (cobalt alloy lasts longer, I buy five-packs online for pilot holes) for starter hole since the center of a bit cuts by crushing then finish with your desired drill bit.
Great video. I'm retired, so I'm only working Two jobs over seven days a week, and now, when I'm just burned out from what will be my last car restoration, because of you, I'm doing this, and it's great. Thank you.
Then you haven't bought from then in the last year. Power tools are now comparable to any of the rainbow color brands. And my $68 12 ton press, the same exact name, is twice the price on Amazon. And shipping was $4.99.
@@nothankyou5524 agreed, been using my crappy HF 19.99 saws-all for a year now, at that point if i had to buy a new one every 6 months it is still better than the big names, i use it for plumbing so it gets more than its share of work
Thanks for doing this video! I really appreciate you starting from scratch, going to the store, buying stuff and starting from scratch- this is one of the most useful videos I’ve seen - great job!
Seems to me, that starting with a smaller hole, would give you a smaller ring size. It also seems to me that one could get an idea of the general final ring size, by the size of the drill bit. Then, you wouldn't have to drop $100+ on resizing equipment. (And, if you can afford the resizing stuff... you can probably afford a torch). Also... a ring mandrel thingy... that's not a typical yardsale find. Small criticisms aside, this was an informative video, with useful information. So, thank you. Your efforts are appreciated.
As an addition to what someone said about gas station jet lighters, you can get butane torches meant for creme brulee or cannabis concentrates for between $15-$30 that'll get the job done annealing a coin.
I didnt realize those would go for that much. 3 rings and your basic tools are paid for. I appreciate your hustle! I'm just over in Oak Grove, got friends in Amity. Beautiful area.
$1 mandrels are everywhere, lol. I've used different drifts, spuds, bull prix, etc. They usually ding scuff and scrape extra character into my poorly unsized rings, they'd be impossible to sell and not because they're priceless like you may think. Thanks and Good work!
Is there any way to make the rings smaller besides spending $100? I only plan to make one ring and need it to be a size 6. Is there any way of making a bigger or smaller ring during the making process? Drilling a smaller hole maybe?
Superb video, thank you for giving us a foundation which most can build from, I've been wanting to make coun rings for years and this was perfect. I know other tutorial videos out there can intimidate viewers due to how much equipment is required to already have on hand, yet this is encouraging to know there are ways to be creative without breaking the bank.
If you can't center, start with a smaller drill bit like 2 mm and size up. Or use a subland twist drill. Was that a Quarter Dollar? I am from Germany so I am not so familiar with the US coins.
is it possible to just go to hammer down to a smaller size from the beginning? For example, make the first side on the mandrell till 5' and then keep going on the other side to the size you want?
Awesome video! If you wanted to go bigger with the ring size, say a size 14 or 15, would you just use a bigger coin or could you continue to go up in size with a quarter? Do you need different dies or could you use those same ones in the kit?
You would move up to a half dollar or dollar to accommodate larger ring sizes like that. There are larger dies at www.jasons.works that will work for those.
This is a great video and got me interested in makes coin rings. My first attempt and quarter would not fit on mandrel. What size drill bit did you use?
Great video. Do you have a video showing how to start making rings? Not necessarily the cheap way but with the press and everything else? What tools to buy? Links? And cost? Thanks for the help
how much should I ask for a quarter ring like the one you just made? I'm new into coin ring making, I already have an arbor press, some dies, dappling block, mandrel,Harbor freight center punch set. I already made a few nice rings from quarters and presidential dollars I don't want to try to make rings from a silver coin yet I want to practice on clad coins.

Serious question: isn't it illegal to destroy/deface currency? (I doubt the Secret Service would come after you for $0.25, I'm just curious)
The short answer is no. It is the same as the penny smashing machines.
Its only illegal if you try to spend defaced currency as legal tender. Once you've shaved a bunch of metal off the coin its no longer legal tender.
