  • This time lapse shows the work it takes to make a coin die from start to finish. (No Sound)
This work shows how I make a medieval style coin die for striking by hand. I work with a modern GRS ball vise for comfort. The steel is made from 1018 cold rolled steel, 1" round bar. All punches used were handmade and shaped for my needs. Enjoy!

During the 1930's my wife's grandfather produced some Indian nickels. Went to prison for 6 months for 25 cents worth of nickels. He got out and became an auto body man. It was said he could work wonders with metal.

Those fake nickels are probably worth more than the real thing now!

I have so many questions lol but I'll just ask two for now. What steel stock did you use and what process do you use to harden the die before striking with it?

This is 1018 cold rolled steel, 4" long and 1" diameter.
1018 does not need annealing before working nor hardening before striking. I expect ~ 5000 strikes per die but my runs are usually below that number. If I were doing something larger scale I would likely use a hardenable alloy, but I do not have means to harden my own dies in my shop.

I want to eventually be able to make a headstamp for the cartridge cases I make. This has a lot of parallels with decorative diemaking i think.

How cool! I really need a set of stamps to strike an 1100s medieval coin. Can you make such a set for me?

      Hello!
Yes my intention is to spend time working on making punch sets, dies, and the tools I use in my work. I expect to have a video up soon on punchmaking.

Thank you so much for sharing this video, do you know of any online forums or such for moneyers?
Edit: I found your website and saw you experimented with making your own blanks, I must remember to email you and share the notes I have on such later.

Do you have any books you could recommend so someone could have an analog guide on how to work steel into the tools needed for coin making?

      Hello,
      I buy gravers from Contenti.com
You can make cheap punches by purchasing letter sets from any hardware store and shaping them as I do in my punchmaking video.
Dies are 1018 Cold Rolled Steel, you can find these at a metal shop in town or online vendors.
