Great video. I like using heavy marching sticks when practicing rudiments and rolls. When switching back to regular drumset sticks, it feels much easier.
Thanks for sharing your experience and double stroke roll practice tip! I remember doing that back on the high-school band drum line. That's a great way to "roll"! Keep swinging my friend 🤙
Lawrence thanks so much! I'm sorry not so much new content lately. I've been so busy with Jazz Drum School and gigging. I've got another one coming out in the near future. If you ever need a hand with your Jazz drumming, I'd love to help you out at Jazz Drum School: jazzdrumschool.com/ Keep swinging my friend 🤙
Hey Von! Im a 13 year old drummer and Iv learnt alot from your videos, Im on vacation in japan with my family right now and I was wondering if you have any gigs/shows coming up Id love to see you perform ! Thanks
Phillip, it's a pleasure to meet you! I'm so glad that you are enjoying my TH-cam lessons. Thanks also for letting me know that you are in Japan! I don't have any gigs this week as I'm about to go on vacation myself. What part of Japan are you visiting?
I live close to Kobe but will be leaving town tomorrow. Sorry I'll miss you but please have a super trip. If you need more help with your Jazz drumming, I'd love to help you at Jazz Drum School too: jazzdrumschool.com/ Keep swinging my friend 🤙
Thanks my London friend for the request! Thanks Mark for the kind words and I'm glad you'll give it a shot! I just used it yesterday to warm up for a gig. So easy and effective. Keep swinging my friend!
Thanks for the reply Mark and It's great to learn more about you! If you ever need a clear path to improving your Jazz drumming, I'd love to help you in one of my course packs: 1. @@jazzdrumschool It’s always good to go back to basics to review what you’ve already learnt, even after all these years and studying with top educators I’ll always review. Thanks I’ll check out your drum packs
Thanks Ron! It's a great exercise for me too! I hope you enjoy it. I'm planning to roll out a Rudiments Course later this year and will include an expanded version of this exercise in there. Hope you're having a swinging great day my friend 🤙
@jazzdrumschool wow Von, that will be interesting. What would really be cool, rudiments with brushes (not as Alan Dawsons using stick strokes) but brush motions (sweeps, etc)
Thanks Ron for the suggestion! Actually, if you take any rudiment and play it laterally (from the side) you can get a softer and more "brushy" sound with any rudiment!
Is your entire method with traditional grip? Because I'm thinking about buying one. But I've been playing for a few years now and I even thought about switching to traditional, but it would delay me even more because I already know how to play something with matched grip.
Thanks for the question and for watching! I teach in Traditional grip but encourage students to learn both grips. I also don't "enforce" traditional grip except with brushes in my Brushes Mastery Course: jazzdrumschool.com/course/drumming-solos-drumming-fills The asymmetry of one hand traditional and the other matched with brushes, creates magic for creativity. It's also visually more interesting in my opinion. So I would go with matched grip with sticks if it's more comfortable. Brushes are Traditional all the way! I hope to see you at Jazz Drum School soon my friend and keep swinging 🤙

Yes absolutely. I even use aluminum sticks to warm up. Amazing switching back to sticks 👍
