Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park is a very large National Park in central Japan crossing both Nagano and Niigata prefectures. The Sasagamine area is in the Niigata end of the national park, hidden away behind the mountains of Myoko. Access is only via the R39 minor road that runs from Suginosawa village and climbs almost continually up to the highland plateau of Sasagamine.
The extensive and diverse woodlands and forests are particularly beautiful during the Spring and Autumn. The area is popular with campers, nature walkers and hikers, with the Sasagamine Campsite positioned at the end of the road, as well as the trail head access to the Myoko mountain hiking trails.
In winter, the whole area and the upper part of the road is closed due to deep snow, in fact part of the road itself becomes some of the piste area of the nearby Myoko Suginohara Ski Resort.
