This is a tremendous series! Thank you! Tell me, what movie is that at the 2:40 mark? Is it something with Cyrano De Bergerac? EDIT: Oops, sorry, I see it in the end credits!

The notion that theatre began in Courts and moved down to the public sphere is a grotesque misinterpretation of life. Ordinary people create our own performances, which rely, like Shakespeare, on imagination. Of course, scenery - like that shown here at Drottningholm's Royal Palace Theatre - also depends on imagination. But the imagination of Commedia performers focus see on playing and audience interaction, not scenery.

+Jacquie Howell - I'' ll try to explain. The present video is part of a series of video's (8 in total) on the history of theatre. Video 1 starts in Athens (Greece) where all the citizens of that city were allowed to visit theater performances. At that time there were no court theaters, there were not even kings in that city state! The development I describe across the ages is confined to mainsteam theatre, let's say the development of theatre played by professionals in buildings especially built for theatre productions. However, through all ages there's indeed also a lot going on outside the theatre building, theatrical performances in churches, on markets, during festivals, carnevals etc. etc., often created by "ordinary people", as you put it. I would suggest that you make a video on that subject, and you'll notice how much time that would take. And then you load it up to TH-cam and the first comment you get states that your video is "a grotesque misinterpretation of life", because it totally ignores the theatre played in theater buildings, or that Japanese girl who writes that your video is "a grotesque misinterpretation of life", because theatre is infinitely more than only the western theatre you're talking about.
