Nice perspective. Good to know about the various subspecialty fellowships there. I myself have got into a surgical vitreo-retina fellowship, which I will take up soon.
I know older retina attending’s who did trauma fellowships. Sometimes you can do a chief year after you graduate and be the globe call person which is basically trauma. I don’t know of any genetics fellowships. I do know there is an international ophthalmology fellowship you can do at Stanford
How does dexterity or lack there of affect your ability as a surgeon. Do you find that you’re nervous to make a slip of the hand while operating? Is ophtho surgery a skill anyone can refine or do you think you have to have an initial high level of dexterity and confidence? Thanks
i think you’re definitely nervous in the beginning. But I think that most people can learn the physical skill of operating. the movements themselves are not to crazy. it’s more of a mental game. Residents are not selected on their dexterity and pretty much all come out able to operate and completely fine.
Hi doctor 👨⚕️ I’m a medical student in Saudi Arabia- ( Can you please post a video about he pros and cons being ophthalmologist and why you choose ophthalmology.... ) Thanks 🙏
Do you think it is unfortunate that even after 4 years of residency training, most of the trainees are only competent in 1 surgery (cataract)? You would think that a training program would try to get you competent in every surgery of your specialty. Also, the politics in medicine is unfortunate when you highlight the idea that if a comprehensive ophthalmologist starts doing subspecialty type surgeries, that they will then get less referrals from the subspecialists in the area.

I just hope UTSW is as gentle dismissing my application like you were with your cats early in the video :)
