This is perfect timing! I have a tournament this weekend and monsters are allowed. Thanks for this! I'll be playing Cities of Sigmar Greywater Fastness, so I'm hoping to shoot them enough to mitigate movement.
That was my comment about the terrain in the Ghur box probably being designed around monsters playing a huge part of WarCry while it’s in Ghur. Yes, it totally changes the game vs 1.0, but I don’t care! I love having a season of the game being monster focused. Ghur is Skull Island baby, bring out the monsters!
I really enjoyed this. My big problem with the monsters at the moment is I don't like most of the models! The Death dragons are the only ones I'd be tempted by.
Hey Dan - I’d love, for your planned future videos, to hear your thoughts on dealing with monsters with other monster lists and with lists that don’t have monsters.
My birthday was last month. I’ve been hard at work building a forest goblin spider clan grot squad for Warcry. Used a bunch of shootas and (spear) stabbas from the arachnarok kit for my chaff units. Also have spider riders, a Scuttleboss, and made a few spiders riders into “jumping spiders” (squig hoppers) by chopping them up, repositioning their legs, and mounting them on flight bases. Finally, I used some of my birthday money to get the arachnarok itself. It’s about halfway painted now. Very depressing to see it in F tier. 😩😭💔 I’ve never been to a tournament, and I mostly only play with my cousins/closer friends, so it truly doesn’t matter much. Still though, poor beautiful giant spider. 😔
That's ok! the reason it's in F tier is bc the base is soo big. If you set up your tables to be more wide-open, then it'll be able to do some good work.
I think it means they cosplay as a dragon for like 2 seconds until they're done with the ability :)

I played against a Cygor. The board made it difficult for my opponent to deploy and move it. It came in round 2 and I put an Annihilator Prime w/Meteoric Hammer in its way. It took the Cygor 2 rounds to take him out, and by then I had taken out most of the rest of my opponent warband.
Yeah I generaly have mixed feelings about the monsters in this game. I like denser terrain in skirmish games and big base models require sparse (almost maningless) terrain or you risk the situation where one player is loosing the battle "against the table".
37:19 DPA5=25? Chimera has 61,1% chance of doing 25 or more damage to T5 target. But only 37,8% chance of doing 26 or more damage to T5 target. But the probability of doing 15+ wounds to T5 is 93,6%. Calculation without any ability enabled. For example: a Zombie Dragon chances are respectively 3,4%, 3,4%, 44,2%. a Ghorgon chances are respectively 19,2%, 19,2%, 66,2% Chimera for raw damage is ultimate choice, should be limited with stats. It is still overpowered like it was for WoC armybook - shame that the GW has not released better looking model, that would make the rules less overpowered :)
Hi! Watching this in 2024, did they just up the point cost of ALL monsters? I was theory crafting a Gitz list of oops all spiders and the monster is almost 500 points 😵💫
I love the idea of monsters in Warcry but I hate the idea of deploying one. It just seems like a total buzzkill with the movement/placement limitations with a lot of these large bases, it seems like it would be very awkward. Instead I'm very happy to use the Chaos Allies like Myrmidon, Sphiranx, and Fomoroid as they fit that nitch while still feeling appropriate for the size of the play area.
@@thesaltyseagames I agree, hopefully with all this support the game is getting we'll be seeing similar allies for the other GAs. Would love some kind of Frankenstein or Bone Giant for Death.
Dave from DWC here, after some play testing, I don't see anyway where Drag and Maul stays as is past any round of nerfs/errata. Also, the Chimera is confirmed insane.
@@thesaltyseagames Reducing the reach to 4" and changing the damage roll to 5+ or even 6+ would be a pretty good starting place. It'd still be really strong for positioning and do what it was probably meant to do - let monsters get at targets they can't reach due to terrain - but it would certainly impact the effectiveness.
I think a lot of folks like them, so I'm alright with them for casual and narrative, but if I was going to TO an event I'd be pretty tempted to ban them. Still need some tournament data to back up the step to go that far, but it's on the table for sure.
@@thesaltyseagames yeah big bases and stats in skirmish games often cause balance issues (either overperforming or underperforming - ruleswise or "placementwise") so for tournaments they are risky. But like you said, more tests would be nice (in my area warcry tournaments are rare, so I can only judge based on random friendly games where we prefer using denser tables for skirmish games...).
I've got a Chimera, its painted, its in a x2 God-Speaker DoS build for ability dice and... I'm feeling a little dirty/sullied (played by permission or in tournaments). Now - it'll be nerfed, pronto. I hope GW reduces its power level to be reasonable for its points rather than +ing the point cost. Cost = its current power would be prohibitive and I HATE when I invest time + $$$ and my stuff quickly becomes unplayable!!!
@@tomliekens6437 God-Speaker DoS is my shorthand for putting the God-Speaker fighter in my Darkoath Savagers (DoS) list. If you aren't familiar with the God-Speaker unit, it has a special ability (triple) where you roll a number of dice = the ability score on the triple and every die that comes up 5+ adds a wild dice to your pool for the game. On the occasions where I've been able to start turn one with two triples with at least one of them a triple 5 or triple 6, I've been able to generate, like, 3 wild dice for my pool, which is then means its easy to make the triples that a Chimera really feeds off of.
@@thesaltyseagames As of today I'm with you more than - it HAS to get nerfed. I just played three solo games with a Scions+Chimera list (Blazing Lord, Immolator, Priest, x2 Initiate) versus the "Ogorly Salty" list I've been tinkering with (Myrmidon, Thaumaturge, Curseling and Centurion Marshal; in the 3rd game I switched out everything but the Marshal for Beasts of Chaos - Bullgor, Shoggoth and Dragon Ogor - to see if higher movement would help - it didn't [Raze scenario].) The Scions+Chimera won all three games handily: Raze, Steal the Prize and Crush. The Chimera goes through T5, 30ish-wound models like butter; its T6 means that even with 25ish wounds inflicted on it, its damage output is still... well... redonkulous - you can try to lock it down with a sacrifice piece and it will destroy that piece in two activations and then still have a third to reposition in the same turn. And there's no staying away from it; its area denial with Grab and Maul is pretty much the whole board - you can try to go around but even with M6 you can't get into positions you need to be in and stay out of reach of that ability.
I really hate monsters. It's just not what the game is about in my opinion and even the ones that are bad just demand you pay attention to them over all else. They're just big, annoying models that at BEST shout "ME ME ME ME" and make the game "my warband vs your monster" instead of "my warband vs your warband" at at WORST are completely meta breaking.
Ok, but what if we rebranded monsters to be Mon-Stars and u could only play them if you painted them in a space jam theme? Would that A) make everything better, or B) make u lose all faith in humanity?

Yeah that's fair. GW's been putting a lit of effort into their centerpieces lately, but the smaller non-hero monsters seem to get a lot less love.
Great video and, yeah, ducks are sneaky SOBs.

Find this just in time. I was about to start ordering some warcry monsters, but wasn't sure what to get. Very excited for the new warcry set
Glad to hear it. There's a lot of really solid options.
Do you have any video on the monsters after the point cost increase? Are they still useable or is the cost just too much to use?

Nice. Annihilator Primes are really awesome too.
My cygor is the one eyed, one horned, flying purple people eater. I threw furie wings on him and he does very well. Can attest.
That sounds awesome
No audio I'm afraid. Apparently, it's back. Must have been me.

Hm Hm Hm. SBGL Theorycraft
Shield- 1x Necromancer, 5x 55pt G.G.
Dagger?- 1x Zombie Dragon
Hammer?- 2x Dire Wolf
995 pts., 9 Units. Good mobility and map-blocking.
Necromantic Bonds 1A
Unfeeling Flesh 1A
Shambling Horde 2
Necrotic Syphon 2
Swooping Strike 2
Slavering Charge 2
Monsterous Reach 2
Drag and Maul 3
Sword-Like Claws 3
Summon Undead Minions 3
Demolishing Rampage 4
Pestilent Breath 4
Vanhel’s Danse Macabre 4
Seems promising. Your hammer and shield have to both have 4 fighters in them, fyi, but that's an easy fix.
Awesome. This is good info.
