- Here is a quick overview of a Pathos Laser Carbon Roller 100 from grip to handle. I go over some of the features of the speargun and parts I really enjoy and share my recommendations for those looking for a speargun. My general consensus is that this is a great reef and light blue water speargun. The ability to change band stretch by leveraging the pretension makes this speargun very attractive.

AWESOME REVIEW ....weight is one thing but there is more value in Density and bouyancy. Bouyancy is the volume of water it displaces, so teh sniper is heavier but displaces more water so has greater bouyancy. you want greater density with greater bouyancy. Density absorbs recoil. The cuttlefish adds density and buoyancy. Also bearings sell rollerguns off the shelf. Bearing rollers also get water lock when fired. the bearing essentially becomes a pump and water flow / pressure management is an issue.
Appreciate the kind words. Very good point that I missed regarding bouyancy. Do you know how you could check/calculate that out of the water? I assume you would have to test it in the water? Really appreciate the valuable insight around bouyancy. Dive safe!
@Dive Spear Eat the cuttlefish on the laser carbon roller has a weight if I remember correctly of 180g and provides bouyancy of 40g. It's an ideal piece of kit. I add them to 60, 70 and 80 rollers and inverters to assist with floatation once you have fired the gun. So those small roller guns float.

I have the same set up with a reel. Totally agree it’s about as long as you want to go for shore diving/reef. It’s great for paddy hunting but my only complaint is it takes ~2 minutes to load so it’s maddening when you are in a hurry. Drop me a line if you ever make it to down to SD.
Thanks for sharing your experience! I agree with you 100%. When I borrow other dive buddies spearguns that don't have adjustable pretention or extra shark fins, it's so refreshingly simple to use. Not sure if you feel the same way but I rarely change my pretention and loading sequence when I go out. The only time I find it useful is when I decide to go hole hunting in central California.

My friend needs a gun for us hunting pelagics in the Azores together.
Would you recommend just a standard sniper like mine or a laser carbon roller 110-120?

Apologies for the late response. If I had to make the choice with what I know now, I would go with the non roller. This is only because I am not a huge fan of the Pathos roller system. If you are considering other rollers that use ceramic bearings, I would use those
Thank you for such a great review, have you noticed the length of the shaft use in this gun, I have an exact one myself, more experienced spearfishmen deprecated that and recommended to go for a 3 to 4 inch taller shaft. Do you think it would be good idea?
Thank you for the kind words. wow a 3 to 4 inch longer shaft is significant. I don't have personal experience with using a longer shaft but I would say up to 3 inches more for shore diving is enough. At a certain point the overhand of the longer shaft could result in a drop in accuracy. I think manufacturers follow this same logic because you rarely see a larger overhang like that on shorter guns like this.

How can I get the new trigger release system for my Pathos sniper roller 95cm?
If you want to swap out your trigger mechanism, I go to my local spearshop (Spear America) and they usually have it in stock. I know there are other triggers that also have a side release that fit in the Pathos Roller Spearguns as well. You were commenting about other roller systems. What other brands models of roller would you recommend? On the cheaper side!
On the cheaper side....I would say the SpearPro Challenger with the Picasso roller (about $350), Rob Allen Roller, or Picasso Magnum BW Carbon Roller Speargun.
Thanks! What's the purpose of that little tongue-looking thing at the end of the muzzle (below the flopper)?
He talked about it, 8:10 it is basically to keep the flopper from flopping around.
@@lochlain2922He did touch the 'tongue' at that time, but then described it as hiding the flopper, which you can see is tucked in a few millimeters away from the tongue. Seems that thing could be cut off and the flopper still hidden just the same. So I still don't understand what it's for. Make sense?
Are the side release better than the top pin release from your experience?
From my personal experience on the pin release has never been an issue but I have only used mono and braid to wrap the pin. From what I had heard from other spearfisherman is that when using bungees for breakaway set ups it can get a bit clunky. I think the side release is simply used way more across brands, and it provides a bit for forgiveness when lining the speargun.
i have this gun in 110 ..i just changed the cross (sigal sub ) and its perfect now
110 is a great size for some light blue water action. Apologies but what is the "cross"?

I haven't had that happen to me so I am not entirely sure. If I hear anything I will let you know
How does this compares to a rob allen carbon timberline rollergun?
I haven't used any Rob Allen speargun before so I can't speak confidently to this but, from what I hear from others and lightly playing them in spear shops I would say the rollers on the Rob Allen spearguns are superior. However, I can't really say anything about the other components (trigger, rail, tube, etc.) of the speargun.

Is you're roller head lower than the carbon tube? It is for me, I dont know if its normal.
hmmmm I haven't noticed that but as I look closer the rollers do seems to be slightly lower than the barrel. I took a look at the Mannysub roller, and that one as well sits ever so slightly below the barrel line.

I'm in the market for a 82 roller. Looking for something carbon with ceramic bearings for shore diving with occasional blue water. Any suggestions?
hmmmm...TBH I don't have a complete speargun I would confidently recommend based on what you're looking for. However, I can say I really like the MannySub roller muzzles. Maybe you could add that muzzle to a nice carbon tube paired with a nice trigger mech.

@@divespeareat I'm looking to pull the trigger on a Manny Sub 80 Performer with ceramic bearings. The head looks like the best on the market and I know some serious spearos who own Manny Sub guns. I plan on calling MS this week to see what they think about my setup and to hopefully make a purchase!

what is the effective shooting distance in carbon roller?
What length are you asking about? The length makes a huge difference. From my experience the 85 roller would probably be affective up to 10 feet with a significant drop off after that. I would say if you are pushing it you could get something as far as 15 feet.
@@divespeareat Hello, is there a big difference in shooting distance with this speargun between 110 and 120 lenght. And also, i was thinking between cressi cherokee power 110 and this pathos laser open carbon 110. What do you think which one is better in terms of accuracy and power?
Is this considered to be a double roller since there's 2 bands?
This set up is a single roller with a kicker band. If you look up double rollers, you will see that they consist of two distinct pairs of rollers for each band.

Isn’t carbon lighter and thus more susceptible to recoil than aluminum. I realize the roller is different, but I never really got this. Why is carbon preferred when aluminum may well in fact provide more accuracy and less recoil?
It actually seems like the non carbon roller is better from pathos, someone did a lot of comparisons and noticed that.
@@1V2N1V2 I can see rollers being better in carbon. But in traditional I think the costs plus I’m assuming added recoil and “shake” due to loss of weight (affecting aim) make carbon losers vs aluminum. Just my opinion of course

You're right! Carbon is lighter but more prone to recoil due to its reduced weight compared to aluminum and wood counterparts. I'm considering a carbon-based speargun because of its enhanced maneuverability underwater and easier handling when entering and exiting from shore.
@@divespeareat I’m not 100% sold on carbon but I see a lot of the guys who really know what they’re doing use them. I think a big part of aiming is gun “sway”, you know like water just swaying a little, and lighter guns will be much more affected by that. I’m not speaking from experience but I would guess heavier aluminum barrels guys would tend to be more accurate, although that may not necessarily be true in a pool environment where people test and sorta skew their results.

So I don't own this speargun, this was a buddy of mine's speargun. But I have used the same style just shorter 65. My personal opinion is that the trigger and carbon tube is really nice but I think the biggest short coming was the roller muzzle. The roller is not as smooth as other ones on the market that use ceramic bearings IMO.

So what would u recommend for a roller setup in the 85-100 length? Mainly will be used for kelp beds in southern california and some yellow tail.
Right now I only have a rob allen 70 so I am looking to step it up a bit ;)
If you think a 90cm pathos without the roller would do the job thats good feedback too. i have just heard the rollers actually work well for their size so was interested in giving them a try.

A 70 Rob Allen is still a good size for hole hunting and light reef hunting. Rollers are really good for packing more power in a smaller package, and I like how flush the bands sit when loaded & unloaded.
With that being said, I don't think rollers are necessary. Below are my general recommendations for both rollers & non rollers:
--- Roller ----
1. Mannysub speargun 85-100 in length
2. Rob Allen 85-100 in length
--- Nonroller ----
1. Pathos Laser (carbon & non-carbon) 90-120 in length
2. Blutec Carbon Open Speargun 90-120 in length
3. Meandros B28 Speargun 90-120 in length
4. Riffee wood gun 90-120 in length
Of course if you have the budget you can opt-in for an inverted roller speargun, and other higher budget spearguns.

I have heard a ton of good things about Mannysub. I am highly considering their models but they do cost a bit.
I was thinking maybe I could go in between for now:
1. Buy a pathos laser in the 90 cm length, since that will still give me more power than the ra 70.
2. Later on I buy a mannysub kit and convert it to a roller if I want.

I actually used a Pathos Open Pro 100. I think one of the best entry level spearguns on the market. That speargun would be equivalent to a 80ish length speargun with rollers.
