Creating a BEAUTIFUL keepsake box!

- Between renovation projects, I still manage to get into the shop and create things from wood! Using hand tools, a shooting board, and a lot of patience, I brought a small piece of lacewood (leopardwood?) and some scrap hard maple to life!

FYI - for the sake of clarity, and so that the comment section isn't confusing, I initially named this video "Creating a BEAUTIFUL keepsake box with mostly hand tools" - and one viewer took exception to me using "click-bait" (because I also used power tools). So I renamed it. I like everyone to be happy!
Maybe it is just me, but I don't think clamps and things you turn on with your hands qualify as "Hand tools". Out of the many tools used I only saw two "hand tools": a hand plane and a screwdriver. Some people like clickbait, but I think honesty is the best policy. You fabricated a beautiful box and should be proud of it! You just didn't need to fabricate the title of the video.
Are you embarrassed that you have and use machines? You don't need to hide the fact if it is true. Embrace it.
To get the alignment of the hinges you might want to watch Paul Sellers' video on how to make a Keepsake Box, he explains how to put the hinges on so a beginner can do it.
Thanks for the comment… I think at the time I made this video, I’d just discovered the use of shooting boards, and I wanted to highlight that technique. Also, while the number of tools used favors power tools, the percentage of time used leans HEAVILY in favor of hand tools, thus the title. Sorry if my choices offended you.

Using a Table Saw, Power Jointer, Surface Planer, Palm Sander, and Band Saw in my opinion does not lean "HEAVILY" in favor of two small hand tools. The weight and size of those machines discount the word "heavily" itself. Just saying. A jig is not a hand tool, so that cannot be counted. A shooting board is not a hand tool, but a jig to use a hand tool with.
That type or style of the attractive box could not have been completed without hand tools, so your title might have been better if it said:"Creating a BEAUTIFUL keepsake box {that could only be completed with} hand tools". I take no issue with power machines (I own all the ones you used in the video and more), I just take issue with someone that uses machines extensively, almost exclusively, and says that made something using "mostly hand tools" when anyone with some experience knows they didn't. I frown on those trying to dupe the novice with clickbait. YMMV
BTW, as a side note - your shooting board seems a bit contrived and awkward to use (you admitted to its inaccuracy). May I suggest looking up the same older Englishman I referred to above, he also shows how to make a board that integrates both your jigs into one and is far more stable and accurate (and no need for clamps).

That domed lid just makes the whole box! Beautiful. I'll have to try this.
I am not an expert, but after several issues with screw alignment for hinges, I now use CA glue to glue the hinge in place. This allows me to properly along the lid. Once the glue is dry, I go back and add the screws.

Box looks beautiful thank you for sharing and Sharing your frustration with the hinges, been there, done that and unlike you l just live with it, l couldn’t be bothered trying again to get things lined up.
Watched lots of TH-cam videos where everything just works first time perfectly, this nearly made me give up. really glad I didn’t there’s something satisfying about working with wood. Thank you again for your time.

I have also been frustrated with hinge alignment. Unfortunately, This is an issue with cheap hinges, and I’m afraid there is no simple fix for it. My solution in the end for the boxes I make, is to purchase decent quality hinges. They are not cheap but good quality hinges will fix your alignment issues. I’m not a sales person, but I purchase Brusso hinges when I am making a quality box. Regards and thx for sharing your vid. Great job 👏

Great looking box! Couple questions. Which plane did you use to shape the lid, and what kind of bit was in your router table when you flush trimmed the bottom of the box? It looked like a spiral uncut bit, and if so, where did you buy it?
In Brazil they call it Louro Faya. Its leopardwood Roupala montana is The latin name.

I wish I’d captured the footage for that, but it’s simply felt cut to size and secured with… I believe I used rubber cement.
Can you make a humidor?
Maybe the wood parts of it! I don’t know anything about humidors though
