A few months ago I changed out the fluid from GM fluid to Valvoline 75/90 Synthetic. A few thousand miles later my transfer case failed. I just got it replaced today. I'm going to open it up this weekend. I can't imagine my fluid change caused a failure.
My vehicle is a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox 3.0 V6 with AWD and 135 thousand miles in North America.

You were lucky to get that many miles out of it before it crapped out. There flawed from the get go most failures seem to be anywhere from 30k to 100k. Switching out my first one for a customer (2013 equinox) all the rest that failed they were never fixed because being in the northeast the chassis rot was so bad and other issues with this platform it wasn't worth fixing.

Interesting. Would they be the same for all models? I have a 3.2 v6 2008 Antara.

Hello, can you tell me if the transfer case is not damaged, can it be rebuilt without removing from the transmission. Replace bearings and seals. Thanks

does anyone has a clue about the exact size or part number of pinion bearings.there are two of them inside that aluminum casing that is oriented towards the rear diff. Two bearings have the BT11-0383/Q number on them, a larger one from the rack shows BT1-0385/Q and the rest have no part number or size.
    Would greatly appreciate any input!
    Thanks

Hi Gerard. Wondering what model Captiva featured in this repair? I'm at 250K with original case. Change oil at 200K.

Very informative Gerard. We've just bought one and have noticed that after a bit of driving and things get warm we get a harsh vibration on tight low speed turns. Initially thought it was the diff but Holden and a diff specialist are starting to point us toward the transfer case. Were there any symptoms before this failure?

Going back a ways now! Just wandering what the cause was? Having the same issue, cheers!

@jasonalvarez5840 it will be the AWD coupling in front of the rear diff. The oil inside the sealed coupling deteriorates. I found an ex Holden mechanic who was able to drain and refill it and then reseal it. Good as gold then.

Hi Gerard. I'm up to 250K km with original case. Replaced Trans oil but worried if I change TC oil now it will cause inevitable fail.. Just starting to feel vibration now between 40-60km/h. Can you suggest stronger bearing upgrade?

    • @GerardBurkeBurkesGarage
      @GerardBurkeBurkesGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

No upgrades that I know of unfortunately, only thing I have advised my customers is to service it early and try and delay/prevent the issue.
I have done three more since that video, I have seen 2 others with bearing noise already present but then declined on any service work

Very extensive internal damage due to the failure of one item. How often does the oil need to be replaced and would that solve the problem? 2nd hand probably the only reasonable option. Everyone on go slow back at the old sod as bug goes berserk.

Hope you are keeping well Tom, every 100,000 - 120,000km
The auto trans get done at 120k and we have done them at the same time previously. This was on 160k, whether it's a case of poor bearings and oil, or that the the service or these gets skipped over I am not 100% sure of. Either way, if I owned one I would get it done every 4th service to be on the safe side.

Substandard bearings using during the manufacturing.

Such a waste of resources and $, why they had to make this bomb with 4 wheel drive when the reality is bumper to bumper traffic and lower speed limits every where.
