Phil Fenders for a couple years were coming out of Indonesia, they seem to be slowly moving the upper tier of low cost out of China(Some of the California acoustics and hollowbodies), The majority of people will not support the CCP, and avoid buying anything from China they can, its nothing against the actual people from China its the government and the massive civil rights violation that they are, I don't want music to be political in a pure sense, but its kind of always been(even before the Beatles ironically going back to classical) and in the past 8 years people have made it more so than ever(which i think is stupid but hey who am I). I just want good quality guitars that are playable out the gate with minimal ease for people to learn on, I have always said 1000+ times before its not $200-500 if you have to add another $200-500 to get it where it needs to be. Also If tone wood isn't a thing, then I think its time we start making guitars out of other materials with a little less bitching from the community.
I thought when Badlands formed the main focus was to create high quality 80's USA shred guitars. It was not about royalty checks. “….It’s such a douchy question” 🤘Amazing bit of podcasting right there. I’ve always loved you but I took my imaginary hat off to you with a double wrist roll at that bit.
Peavey is the most under-respected brand out there. Especially on the used market. However, that gives people with shallow pockets a huge opportunity to get some amazing durable gear for cheap. For example, if a 70's peavey amp has a tube power section - then what if you bypassed/substituted the preamp with a Friedman IRX? Result, a monster tone and monster amp. The jacks for that are already on the back.
@@judehanley9980 I picked up a MINT 72 reissue MIM Tele on Reverb for $500 from Dave's. In Dec I picked up a classic vibe blackguard Squire Tele in "Mint" which was spotless but no warranty - for $275.00. I'll be curious about the overstocks.
No way. The necks will go for more. The folks that are buying these want that Fender logo on the headstock. I’ve read these models will be the quality of Squiers CV series. I have my doubts they’ll even be as good. If Fender can get away with selling a Squier Affinity with a legit Fender logo on the headstock; and charge you another $100-$200 more than a Classic Vibe … That’s the current state of Fender IMO.

Hi Phil! Great podcast as usual! May I suggest that you check for the fender standard if they use metric or imperial for hardware (some US/mim hardware was not compatible with squire ) and if the body width is like the thinner Squire or the Proper American one? Thanks!

The stuffed cabbage rolls were to die for! And, NOT being a beer drinker by any means, I did find the German beer quite good.
Just to clarify, micarta is thermoset fabrics and/or paper. It's great for pocket knife scales but I'm not sure why it would be better than other nut materials that're similarly priced 🤔
Someone mentioned an SG shaped guitar. I also heard Maybach mentioned. It's called an Albatros, I have a Pellum blue jr. Awesome guitars, 4th one. Contact Omega in Belgium, or Richards Studio 54 in Spain. Two way truss rod, hidden fret tang, slab rosewood. I am very happy.
I had a Fender Jim Adkins tele, made in Indonesia, that back then was arounds 800 EUR, (now 1099 USD at Sweetwater). I sold it and it's one of the few guitars I regret selling. great guitar.
From LeoM: The Badlands / Harley Benton story was pretty interesting. Licensing agreements probably profit more in the long run than manufacturing. I am kind of amused at how many people get all bent out of shape over "owning" guitar colors. I have been photographing Custom cars at car shows since 1970. Pretty hard to find any color that is not in the DuPont, HKS or PPG paint catalogs. As far as patterns, I cannot even believe there is anything that has not been done before. Good Show.
I’ll be glad that the kids just starting out might be able to snag one of the new fenders used for like 400 that’s an incredible value! I know squire especially classic vibe have been putting out quality but it’s got that fender name. Pretty cool hope they don’t suck!
I am a little blown away by this. I own an original Peavey decade in decent condition.....original speaker as well....are you telling me these are now collectable?? Who would have thunk it???
I was reading Queens od the Stoneage’s post on this amp on FB, and a bunch of folks were saying they could still find it at clueless pawn shops for $40 lol. So sell it to someone who looks at Reverb lol.
Fender using Micarta as nuts is crazy, in the knife world Micarta is used as handles because it is grippy. It is epoxy with pressed layers of either paper, linen, canvas, or burlap.
I don’t care where a guitar is made as long as it’s built well with quality components and it has mojo. That said, I am lucky to have bought my American Tele and Strat back in 2014 when it was somewhat affordable. Those same models are easily $1k more now.
The $1,000 Fender Custom Telecaster FMT HH has been made by Cor-Tec in Indonesia for at least the last 5 years. Not at all "just a rebadged Squier." Time will tell with the new "Standard."
Last fall I played an Indonesian Classic vibe squire telecaster ($450) and compared it against a MIM player II telecaster ($799) and they were really close. Pick’em. Fenders move to the Indonesian standard makes perfect sense. The build quality is there.
If you’ve never played a Taylor electric, you really should! It will probably be one of the best guitars you ever play! Sadly, I’m still looking for a Taylor acoustic that I like as much. They gave up on the electrics way too soon, and if more people had gotten a chance to try them, it would have been a winner. The guy that runs Taylor now has a new line of electrics under his own brand. If they’re half as good as the Taylor’s were, I’d like to try them!
A lot of podcasts play a particular sound right before they get back to the content. if you hold down the button to fast play, you can get through the garbage quickly.
To the guy looking for an SG….I just got an IYV SG off Amazon and even though it was $200 it’s amazing. (I say this with a few Gibsons in my collection) Needed a fret level and setup though.
I've got a D'Angelico Mini DC that was made in Indonesia. She's the best guitar I've ever played so I will be expecting these new Fenders to be pretty decent instruments...
I'm curious if the Fender Standards are compatible with the current American scratch guards. That and the pots/wiring quality are what I'm curious about because other than really high end stuff it seems like we always have to clean up some fret ends and do a setup and all that. So as long as the bones are decent and easily compatible with upgrades... I'm good with it. Oh, and the tuners, are they studded like the other Fenders?
I bought a Squier Classic Vibe Stratocaster at the end of 2022 for $265 from Pro Audio Star. This included shipping. The guitar needed very little setup wise to get it playing how I like it. The Classic vibe is made in Indonesia. So 25 months later, now you get a lesser quality version of the Classic Vibe for double the price I paid but it has the Fender logo on it? And Fender is calling it the “Standard”? The only thing on the “Standard” that I like better than the Classic Vibe is Med Jumbo Frets. Does this mean the made in Mexico guitars from Fender will go up to $1,000?
@ This was my only guitar I have ever bought from PSA. It was definitely brand new. The candy apple red paint on the body is stunning. I was hoping they would have another sale on the CV’s this past Thanksgiving but they never did. I was going to buy a 70’s CV. I think the made in Mexico guitars will be going up to 1,000 now.
Speaking about MIM Fenders, I bought a Player II Strat for $511 after tax (and with trading in a pedal). I bought it on sale, and then the next week after I bought it on sale, they put it on sale again and dropped the price another $50. I saw a comment on Reddit about an undiscounted Player II vs a used American Standard and I have to agree with that comment’s conclusion: the new MIM is too close in price to a used MIA.
I own two guitars which have been manufactured in Indonesia. I have noticed that it seems that there is one big difference between guitars made in Indonesia and for example in California. And the difference is the humidity of air in the area where the guitar is manufactured, and the wood materials of a brand new guitar as well. I have noticed that if the guitar is made in Indonesia and is brought into and kept in a quite dry environment, especially neck and fretboard are almost inevitably prone to some shrinkage, causing at least minor fret sprout.
I’ve got a vintage ‘67 Deluxe Reverb with a JBL and a ‘65 Deluxe Tonemaster. The ‘67 sounds different and great but I use the Tonemaster 95% of the time. The weight is a big difference, pedals sound great through it but most of all I ‘ve grown to love how silent it is. No buzz or hum ever. If I had to sell one I would sell the ‘67.
I love Phil, but human nature is a crazy thing. "I don't like like heavy 9lb guitars", but Phil will buy and play a 9lb Bass and loves it. You go Phil.
hmm maybe as you stated the tarrifs could make overseas guitars more expensive and maybe they dont feel people will pay that much markup for squier name so are being rebranded fender.. so might be a good move and once things level out they may stop making them?
@@mikeomatic9905 yeah... possible. I just picked up a new JV modified made in Japan Fender strat and its exquisite... they arent that inexpensive either but worth it
From the specs I’ve seen, it looks like Fender is taking a $200 Sonic, and putting a $400 water slide decal on it. If the prices on a MIM go up, I’ll go up to an American made, or down to a Classic Vibe. I’m not touching one of these.
they been making the classic vibes over there, there are good guitars but when you bought a fender name on headstock it was pretty much North American made. And Mexico is only couple hours from corona (California) now the feeling is that fender name can be from anywhere I believe that loses value. If you want a Gibson you know is USA made, you know you gonna pay $$…but you also know it was made by American employees who get vacation, etc. I still believe there is some pride in that
I bought my Fender American Standard Strat back when that was kinda a big deal... I bought a Mexican Standard when they dropped it to a Made in Mexico and it is a fantastic guitar. I imagine these new Indonesian Standards are a little better than the classic vibe but not based on historic models. There is probably a good Extra $100 tacked on for the Fender vs Squire name but it will probably be good. Even the Squire Infinity series sounds pretty good especially through a great amp.
My question is will these new models accept other parts well? Whats the body wood? Poplar? I’m into buying bodies and tossing the neck and replacing it with something specific and quality. I’m a collector and don’t aim to trade, just collect designs and colors of Strats and teles I just want with different necks/pickups/hardware for experimentation. Call me bored but this is what makes me happy in life. The hunt and kill and projects. Something to look forward to.
Yup, they rip. Lots of punk and pop-punk bands I like have had a 900 somewhere in their history. My 50w MKIII is the same age as me, and so easy to dial in.
I think it’s because there’s so much hype over the JCM800. They both sound great, but the consensus seems to be that the 800 is slightly better, which I agree with. But that’s better for us bargain hunters 😉
Lol my early days were one of those peavey amps and a metal zone did the job still playing todayhad some sick gear, now i role amp sim through glenn fricker's Revv IR and shred. When i need the big guns i go for the Revv Generator
Great show Phil & team! I''m a huge fan of Kyuss/Queens of the Stone Age. Josh homme is my favorite contemporary guitar player. He's well known for being super secretive and/or lying about what he uses to get his tone. If you watch the interview that he says he uses the Peavy, he just throws it out there. He also uses a bunch of gear to get a tone of different tone, If you listen to QOTSA, they're all over the place in genres so he might use a peice of gear for just one song on one album then never again. So it would be really funny if Peavy remade this amp on a BS comment and a tone of people buy them to get his tone but no one can figure out how to get there, because it's BS. lol
The Guitar Max Signature is easily Harley Benton's best guitar and also by any measure a really well kitted and well made axe. The consolation prize to getting duped by HB in this case is that they at least did it with their flagship.
Indonesia makes sense, I was wondering where they are made for $499 or whatever they are asking for those new Fender guitars, I like my Mex made DuoSonic,
Before we had good import gear (or even Crate) Peavey was a godsend for poor musicians, offering decent, roadworthy gear at reasonable prices. I owned a Peavey Decade back in the '80s and a TNT bass amp. Their gear was indestructible. I'd still like to have an old Mark III or Mark IV bass amp head. Those things were legit. They didn't call it the "poor man's SVT" for nothing.
Hey Phil, thanks for your service, boo on Badlands, you know Harley Benton is going to sell the shiznit out of there holoflash. The Badlands folks should work Harley Benton so they can fund more Badlands guitars

I own one and it is on par with my 94 US strat.
Last fall I played an Indonesian Classic vibe squire telecaster ($450) and compared it against a MIM player II telecaster ($799) and they were really close. Pick’em. Fenders move to the Indonesian standard makes perfect sense. The build quality is there.
The rear panel shot of the MARSHALL JCM 900 HEAD indicates a collaboration with YAMAHA MUSIC JAPAN.
Texas Toast will make an SG, it's called the Prositute.. typically neck through..
Thank you @karstenhammerhansen for the suggestion!
The Guild Polara Deluxe is a GREAT Gibson SG alternative. I like mine much more than the Gibsons I've owned.
Nice suggestion @Zoso981, I completely forgot about that one!
To the guy looking for an SG….I just got an IYV SG off Amazon and even though it was $200 it’s amazing. (I say this with a few Gibsons in my collection) Needed a fret level and setup though.
Thank you @terrorbirds9835 for the suggestion!
Love that SG
For quality SG copies get a japanese Edwards, or Navigator. Or from Germany a Maybach Albatrozz. 👍🏻
Thank you @nuitari666uzgurzmor6 for all those suggestions!
Thank you. See, "Outsourcing Unemployment", by Adam Yamaguchi
Preamp pedals into interfaces thru an IR is pretty big in home recording.
That's crazy Warwick made you a custom 4 string guitar. I thought they only made basses.
Have you done much business with PAS. The stuff always seems to good to be true...I think I'm thinking of the right place.
Hmm, a $200 Peavey pedal is not for me. I hope they do well for the company though.
Phillip the goald prs behind your head is giving the illusion you have ear rings like a pirate what’s up!
Maybe 9lb is very light in the bass world??? Just a guess, I have no idea.
The Fender branded Modern Player guitars were made in Indonesia for many years. not sure what the big deal is.
off topic. I keep seeing that blue framus with p90s. have you done a review of that thing? I can't find it if you did. Thanks, Mark
hmm maybe as you stated the tarrifs could make overseas guitars more expensive and maybe they dont feel people will pay that much markup for squier name so are being rebranded fender.. so might be a good move and once things level out they may stop making them?
Alternatively, people won’t pay that much for a MiM Fender.
@@mikeomatic9905 yeah... possible. I just picked up a new JV modified made in Japan Fender strat and its exquisite... they arent that inexpensive either but worth it
I hope peavey makes a comeback
Peavey is still popular with the metal guys
From the specs I’ve seen, it looks like Fender is taking a $200 Sonic, and putting a $400 water slide decal on it. If the prices on a MIM go up, I’ll go up to an American made, or down to a Classic Vibe. I’m not touching one of these.
I'm not even touching MIM. If MIJ is available, I'm taking that
they been making the classic vibes over there, there are good guitars but when you bought a fender name on headstock it was pretty much North American made. And Mexico is only couple hours from corona (California) now the feeling is that fender name can be from anywhere I believe that loses value. If you want a Gibson you know is USA made, you know you gonna pay $$…but you also know it was made by American employees who get vacation, etc. I still believe there is some pride in that
The DSL amp line is pretty big in the death metal, Slam communities.
Not a big fan of Sweetwater but I give them credit for showing the back of the headstock so everybody knows what they're getting.
There's a Decade pedal. You even hovered over it.
I've got a Marshall JCM900 the year they came out. The 50W Dual Reverb head. I honestly don't understand all the hate...It's an incredible amp.
I agree.
YES!! Bass of the week!
I gotta hurry up and get my player II tele...
So Fender replaced the Squier logo?
Nike is to _Just Do It_ 👟
as Warwick is to _'This We Can Do'_ 🤘🔥🎸
Indonesia makes sense, I was wondering where they are made for $499 or whatever they are asking for those new Fender guitars, I like my Mex made DuoSonic,
Hmmm... I may buy that Fender Strat from you after you buy it. One Army veteran to another.
Squier with Fender logo.
Not sure how many got the picking up the trash song, but I'm loving it
Before we had good import gear (or even Crate) Peavey was a godsend for poor musicians, offering decent, roadworthy gear at reasonable prices.
