    With its burgundy cover and coat of arms, the British National (Overseas) passport or BN(O) might look like a regular “full” British passport.
    But just as a book cannot be judged by its cover - the relative benefits and rights offered by a BN(O) are complicated.
    For nearly a decade after July 1, 1997 - when former British colony Hong Kong was handed back to Chinese sovereignty - the BN(O) passport was the most popular travel document among Hongkongers. At one stage, nearly 800,000 of the passports had been issued.
    But by 2015, many residents who are Chinese nationals switched to less-expensive Hong Kong SAR passports, which also provide greater visa-free access abroad.
    But amid anti-government protests in 2019, many are taking a fresh look at the BN(O) passports, and there are renewed calls for London to widen citizenship rights offered by the document.

    They should refer to how Portugal treated the people of Macau. BNO is a joke, they never intended hongkongers to be British. Portuguese Macanese have full Portuguese citizenship, unlike British hongkongers.

      I am Portuguese, and no, we don't give citizenship like candies. We give them to people who were born in former possessions before the time of handover, because that's what's right. Macau, Angola, Mozambique, etc, they weren't just protectorates, they were part of Portugal, and so everyone deserves equal rights. There are no tier 1 or tier 2 citizens.

      @the MadHater unfortunately during the time the Philippines were colonized by Spain, Portugal and Spain were in a personal union, so we had the same King. We lost a ton of rights during those years, and it took us a full war to get our independence back (it is known as the restoration war).

      @frankyong2607 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tad555 Yes, all superpowers are bullies. On the case of Tibet - the Tibetans were internally fighting among themselves eventhough it was a theocracy of Buddhist priest-ruler/king. A group of losing Tibetans seeked external help from Mongols - Manchus (both closely allied militarily with each other) that was ruling over China from the 17th to early 20th century as the Qing Dynasty of China. Thus Tibet became an unwitting protectorate of the Manchu Inner Asian Empire and thereafter the Chinese Communist Party-State. The British Empire too had at one point invaded Tibet from British India. And yes the American 'Empire' too had actively supported/financed/trained (within USA) Tibetan freedom fighters/guerrillas to intrude from Mustang, Nepal into Tibet (under China's control). But the Tibetans were betrayed by USA when Nixon suddenly warmed up to Mao. Superpowers/global hegemons have no principles but only self power interests.

Why would they import a bunch of lowly educated, un-wealthy, people with questionable ethics, some with pending rioting and assault charges? To bring crime to the UK and to claim their benefits? The people with the skills or the wealth can easily immigrate to the UK. In the 97' Handover, a lot of wealthy or highly skilled hong kongers were offered full British citizenship. @NkWong 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The information in this video is not really accurate. BNO holders can actually travel to 137 countries without visa and 42 countries with arrival visa, and 6 countries with e-Visa; while HKSAR passport holders can travel 133 countries without visa, 35 with arrival visa and 2 countries with e-Visa. The reason why Hongkongers tend to use HKSAR passport rather than BNO is the fact that the fee for application for and renewal of HKSAR is much cheaper than the fee for renewal of BNO.
