    Congratulations on a great tomato harvest. You’re tight, come winter you will appreciate this extra work. My tomato harvest was very disappointing this year. No blight until the very end a couple of weeks ago and dismal harvest with very few ripe tomatoes. I covered the plants through a few light frosts but then got a harder frost and saw the tell tale spots of blight starting to appear. Harvested everything (a sorry amount and mostly green) and have them out in the garage and bringing them in a few at a time as some start to ripen and finishing ripening in the kitchen. Onions were a total disappointment this year also as well as peppers. But squash, cabbage, beets, celery, lettuce and chard did reasonably well. We’ve gotten beautiful weather since I harvested the tomatoes, squash, beans and peppers.. Hahaha. Oh well. Oh, and the carrots are doing reasonably well. Surprising, since I planted them rather late. Would love to see you do a video on how you prepare the green tomato curry as I’m pretty sure I’m going to have mostly green tomatoes. Keep safe and all the best to you.

      Oh the ups and downs of growing our own eh?! For every disappointment (beans in my case) there are always things to celebrate. We just have to adjust our recipes/cooking accordingly. Happy winter scoffing lovely. :-)

Cheers Vivi, you're having some beer, I'm drinking some wine. xo.Oh no don't stop preserving. I've just bought a book about fermenting as I want to try out so many more ways to store our vegs so I won't get bored with the same, the same... I agree, it's a joy to be so rich to take out your freezer the harvests when it's needed. Over here tomorow will be a dry day, after that rain indeed and I'm just relaxing over here. I will still go to my allotment during the autumn and winter, I've some vegs sown in the greenhouse and I've a wurmtower/hotel that needs attending or perhaps I'll transfer it to our back garden. Will see. Hope you had some sleep and that the knees didn't went cranky on you. Hugs xoxo Vleer.

    🍻CHEERS! I harvested my green tomatoes yesterday and took cuttings of my plants to try overwintering them in the house... no idea if it will work. I am also trying to over winter peppers by bringing in the plant. I am completely fascinated by all the different preservation methods. I have always dabbled.... However, this year was a record for me. I have been canning/bottling like a fool with still more to go (fortunately no more tomatoes) until I run out of jars. We are having a shortage on them here. Green tomato curry sounds amazing! I was also thinking I might try some salsa verde and fried green tomatoes. Take care and 😊 thanks.

    • @WhatVivididnext
      @WhatVivididnext  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I actually ended up blitzing ALL of it after the first go......it comes out so gorgeously thick and creamy......I had some over steamed kale and it was ridiculously lux - blitz away lovely, blitz away! Hahaha....the 40p is staying in there and having odd pennies added for the next bottle. ;-) Even if we do get blight now I think we'll be grateful it's so late in the season....it's not often we have outdoor toms still standing in October! I may even see if I can get one through 'til Christmas! ;-)

    You have certainly been blessed with tomatoes this year. One thing I do with some of my tomatoes is open freeze them whole. When they start to thaw you can easily rub the skins off, or you can just drop them whole into a stew if you don't mind the skin. Watch out, though that they don't roll out of the freezer. They become like snooker balls and they can do some damage if they land on your toes.

      I also do this with my Roma tomatoes. Saves having to deal with them in 40°+ weather. When I want to use them in a sauce I put them in a bowl of water to soften slightly, then peel (very easy when they’re frozen), chop them up frozen and into the pot. And yes when they’re frozen whole they are just like billiard balls and would give someone a good crack on the head if you needed a weapon.

Last year I pulled two entire tomato plants, roots and all, hung them upside down in my basement and they continued to slowly ripen for fresh eating. Oh I love that combination of foods, tomato, garlic, onion and olive oil. Roasted. Yum. I'm still getting ripened tomatoes even though it's cold. 60s F in the day and 30s & 40s at night. I don't have near the space you do to be able to put up, but we'll eat them until they're gone. My plan for next year includes more tomatoes.

    Love it! It does seem like the energy level tanks by the time late night preserving hits. I sure hope you didn't use sharp tools after that gorgeous beer on an empty stomach. 😂😂😂 Could we have another quick peek at your tomatoes? Ours here have been done for ages.

    • @WhatVivididnext
      @WhatVivididnext  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahaha - sharp tools are bad enough when I'm stone cold sober....so definitely none used after a glug of beer......though I did nearly slice open my hand washing up the blender blade! Yes, I stayed up and did the blending too. ;-) I managed a wee visit to the garden today to film the October tour so you'll see the toms then......they're still coming! Woah! :-)

    Olive oil is one of the better fats. I also use avocado oil and grape seed oil, peanut oil if stir frying. I bet the smell IS amazing.
    Can you trade some tomatoes with someone else at the allotment for something that you didn’t grow? Maybe for a bit of a change ?
    As to green tomatoes, I’ve heard of them being used in a vegetarian version of mincemeat for pies...maybe. I always like fried green tomatoes, but really hard to do with tiny tomatoes. I’ve heard that if you leave a bit of stem in, wrap in newsprint, they can slowly ripen, tasting like hothouse tomatoes. Not the best flavor, but possibly tomatoes at Christmas? Of course I’ve also heard of using green pumpkins in place of apples in pie, too. Necessity is the mother of invention, as they say.😉

      @WhatVivididnext  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely! I'm looking forward to trying the green tom curry as I have yet to find a way to eat them that I enjoy! I will of course lay them all out for a while to see if they will ripen.......but......hahaha, I have a feeling there will still be quite a few green ones. :-)

Good job jobbed well done, and easy does it on the treats 🤣 I’m the same, I have a small square of dark chocolate and feel it’s a massive treat, but for a different reason than yours, mines down to health and keeping on the right side of insulin resistance......I’m watching this in the morning, I cannot stay up late anymore.
