@@TotalSagat Wouldn't that create dbfz conundrum where a few characters rule the top and lower characters in their archetype are near unusably bad in comparison. Even inside "types" characters need reasons to exist. T4 Jin, Vanilla Sagat, Bayo were all pretty bad for the games they were in. And I imagine from the spectators view, nobody likes watching the same 6 characters over 2 days.
It seems like every other SFV character was designed to have certain strengths and weaknesses, except for Luke, who does everything well. I'd say he's sort of like SFII Ryu, except that SFII Ryu was just all around solid, yet Luke combines so many strengths of other characters, often even better than other's specialties, while having little to no weaknesses of his own. I sort of get wanting to hype up the next game's co-main character, but making him so he just invalidates any reason to play many other characters unless you have a personal attachment to them is pretty lame. I get the feeling he'll end up like Super Turbo's O. Sagat in a way, where he's not invincible, but he outright beats a huge chunk of the cast
After watching this I realized how weak shotos are in this game, especially the fireballs and the long reaching buttons. Giving everyone an anti fireball move + midrange crush counter normals hurts these characters a lot. I hope things get changed for the poster boys in SF6.
No one talked about Luke's broken Vskill 2 as no one uses it but in fact this is "THE" tool that makes this character so BROKEN. Daigo figured it out but he doesn't want the others to find it. Luke can dash up to your face and perform a fake grab with Vskill 2: you're dead. Luke can frame trap you by poking you with his plus normals and a Vskill 2 instead of a throw. You use a delay throw tech? You're dead. Luke can walk forward and makes you think he's gonna throw you: you use a throw tech? you're dead. He practically can use Vskill 2 as a 50/50 attack so you have to guess it right if you don't want to die. And the most ridiculous thing about this Vskill is it's safe! you can mash it in the face of your opponent without the fear of being punished! It can even be an oppressive tool if you're cancelling it with his Heavy Flash knuckle (normal or charged one) and with the charged one you can go for another Vskill 2 to completely destroy your opponent as he will think you're gonna throw him after a big + frames! And those aren't even the only thing he can do with this incredible Vskill 2! So I'm really surprised no one cares about this Vskill but for me this is the best Vskill of the game as the game defense is based on throw techs!
This video is fucking bonkers amazing. you'd make for a fantastic teacher, thank you so much. i recently got to gold and every other match i play is a Luke - it feels horrible, but i could never quite put my finger on what made him so strong. this really helps me understand the situation, i appreciate it
Nailed it, great video. Indeed this is just zoning and buttons, he also has the throw, 3 blocked mediums to confirm..the vs2 is good too not just vs throws..
My main problem is that Capcom puts him in the game basically says “he’s important to the future of street fighter so you better like him!” then makes him bananas. That’s literally how you get everyone to hate him. They should’ve made him a middle or low tier with some significant strengths. Everyone loves an underdog.
@Daniel Astorga I kinda have to disagree mate. SF3 was made with the idea of it being a hard reboot. Initially it wasn’t going to have Ryu or Ken and Alex was designed as the main character. It also just so happens that a grappler doesn’t tend to top tier lists. SFV is a very well balanced game so he’s not a “joke” in that and he has a dope design. Luke on the other hand looks like a dork with linguine on his head and is basically the best character in the game. He’s not unbeatable but he is in a league of his own
There is not point on play sagat anymore... luke does everything better than my sagat, the only thing that could make you keep playing Sagat is, loyalty, honor, love for his personality, just that...
At least Kage and Akuma have cooler VT combos. Bit disappointed he invalidates most of my favorite characters though. I think Luke is cool and all, but choosing your character is supposed to be y'know.. a choice. Solid content as always though man. Now I have somewhere to direct people to when I try to bring his balance up. He may or may not be overpowered, but he is objectively the best shoto by a mile.
They set some down rules for most characters and Luke just broke them all. Sagat out there charging 50 frames to get a juggle point ha ha ! It sucks, but it's done now.
I... Actually agree with you, I personally like fighters with a bigger base power level or at least feeling strong I really like SFV too but that would be a welcome change
I used to think like this too, but now having played a few fighting games which employ this type of gameplay (GG Strive) I can safely say that this quickly becomes extremely unfun to play. Characters can do insanely oppressive stuff to you and it sometimes feels like you don't get to play at all. Of course it's fun when you're doing it to others, but I just don't get along this type of game design.
Ive actually just started playing GGST after watching hours of matches and I dont think strive is that type of game, but still, it probably comes down to preference
The problem is, if everyone is broken like him, then no one is broken. It's just a different game. This feels like they took a loud noisy fart in an elevator and then got off leaving everyone to deal with it.
Been waiting for the fireball intel & you didn't disappoint. I hope when SF6 comes out, Luke fits in better & decides to leave SF5 altogether, lol. Thanks for the video!
Luke might just end up having the same problems that Vanilla SF4 sagat has, he is super strong but some some reason rarely won big events, time will tell
Just because he's busted, I dont think that will equate to a free win. Character/player synergy is a thing (Tokido/Akuma comes to mind..the only Akuma that was winning shit despite everyone complaining that Akuma was broken), and some people will have better tech because they put the work in as opposed to having a pocket Luke because strong. But you put it quite right, time will tell if we will have a top 8 with 8 Luke mains. Doubtful, but be sure that almost every pro player about to have a pocket Luke

Subbed. Loved the video. Obviously the devs at Capcom didn't learn anything from Namco (Tekken 7). That's why a lot of pros have refrained from maining Luke. I personally hate this shit. I hate the KOFesk moveset Luke has. I hate his character design. It's lazy. A surfer dude wearing basketball shorts and basketball jersey with Popeye arms? Not to mention he's another Ryu clone that doesn't even contribute to the lore of the game. Luke is broken and uninteresting. I have no interest in playing him. The implications for SF6 are... unpleasant. Great video though.
Wasn't there a patch that nerfed all the dp's in the game and then they released Luke. I'm kind of disappointed that this is the final state of the game because the final patch should be more evenly balanced. I did know as soon as I saw it that his fireball was op, I just didn't realize how bad it was.
Especially online play reacting to his fireball can be too late because of the command sync.
