How to Draw a Kookaburra Bird - Coloured Pencils - Hot Press Paper - Beginner Art Tutorial

In this video I explain my process for drawing this Kookaburra Bird with colored pencils on hot press watercolour paper.
I wanted to capture a realistic portrait but wanted to draw the realism with simple shapes and colour transitions rather than adding lots of details.

Important notes from the lesson:
• always use sharpened pencils
• very light layers to create mixes.
• undertones and placements of light and shadows
• blend after every few layers to check if the colors' temperature is good.
• don't think too much about the texture of the paper until the end, where you can blend and lighten.
• work in sections
• negative spaces
• light pressure always before blending

Lovely drawing!
I found out to me cellulose paper works best than 100% cotton paper, I put light base layers of pencil first but the manual paint cutter tool doesn't quite work on cotton paper for me. Thanks for sharing!

It's great to know that Cellulose paper is working well for you. I find that it depends on manufacturer rather than cotton or cellulose paper. I find the slice tool works on some brands and not others.
