    Key start, shift to 2nd gear, pull clutch, push bike, release clutch. push starter (or just rev throttle), bike should start then quickly pull clutch and jump on the bike.

      Or if you're lucky like me
      Hold clutch, it into second
      Push dead bike down hill gently and let it pickup speed while riding
      Rev throttle

    After you posted video 12 years back, I watched to know exactly how we balance the bike while punching to jump start it, because whenever I push it I feel like dropping the bike on the other side.
    So was it's definitely.
    Thanks for your work.

    Thanks man... No need to hit the starter tho. The actual pushing of the bike acts as the starter.

    This video saved my butt today. Caught myself in some rain and unridable wind conditions 6 miles from my exit on the interstate. Battery went dead from the hazards being on. Luckily I stopped under a bridge on a hill. 3 tries out in the rain and got her to start finally. Thank you

      you can also start it by your hand by center standing the bike and turn the wheel (it should be in 2nd or 3rd gear)...do it with caution... if that wont start easily you might need to increase the idle speed and readjust when it starts...

  • @shadowdog500
    @shadowdog500 14 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Luckily, I havent had to do this in a long time, but I always jump on the bike just before I pop the clutch, this way your weight is on the rear wheel giving it traction, and the bike cant pull away from you once you pop the clutch. I never hit the starter button either, getting a running start and popping the clutch should be enough to start the engine. I really do miss kick starters as a backup to the stater button, besides they were cool to use when people were watching.

    I see a lot of people tip the bikes over trying this too, when my battery died on my ninja I got my truck and used jumper cables and jump started the motorcycle, which also works for smaller people that have a hard time holding the weight of the bike up.

  • @vccranker
    @vccranker 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks, nice of you to share your experience.
    You can also sit on the bike if you're fortunate enough to be on a hill or have someone give you a push. I've also waddled along after straddling the bike. For me it feels safer to be sitting on the bike.
    Also, similar to a push start on a car, I just make sure the key is in the 'on' position and let the clutch out once I'm up to speed but haven't had to engage the starter, leaving me with one less thing to have to do to get it started.

  • @DigiDriftZone
    @DigiDriftZone 14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    On my 250r, I can't push start in first at all, it locks the rear tyre and skids to a halt - even tried it off a hill. Also, it's impossible to get it into second because of the "positive neutral finder" it has - so what I find is I start to walk with the bike - when it is moving I am able to kick it up into second (which is a bit tricky while you're moving), then pop the clutch and it starts :)

    If its really not wanting to start 1st should give the engine more of a push then 2nd right?
    What I do is just get my bike going a bit, and then hop on and dumb the clutch, it jerks a bit but you just drive off after.

    @shaykai Sorry to ask another question - any chance you could direct me to the exact product / tell me which year zx9r to look for - I have been after a rack for my zx6r for ages and it would be a huge help.
    Thanks again for your reply.

    logic,
    rear wheel drives the chain drives front sprocket front sprocket shaft to gearbox gearbox to clutch clutch to crankshaft.
    release the clutch and your rear wheel will drive the pistons,
    dont forget to switch you contact to on haha
    when changing gears of your bike whilst not running, push it back and forth. This way the (schakelvorken) will push the (tandwielen) into place.
    sorry i do not know the english term of these two.
    From a motorcycle mechanic in holland!

    @shaykai its sweet on a vespa, about three quarters of the way down, you jump on, and the weight adds momentum, you let go of the clutch, and off you go. It looks really smooth if you ever see a scooter rider doing it.

    do you pop the clutch or slowly ease out and then just hit the start button? The road by my house is a downhill. Incase I have to do this i HAVE to get it right the first time.
    I Imagine trying to push it back uphill wouldnt be fun at all.

  • @DoyleHall
    @DoyleHall 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    if you are stranded on the side of the road where do you buy a battery? I wouldn't leave my bike on the side of the road, first person to drive past with a truck(or van as I've seen) and it's gone.

    I tried it many times since I started motor cycling. Best way is turn on the kill switch and turn the key on.Then find a place where the motorcycle is easy to roll on.Change the gear on to first gear then get on the bike ,start pushing forward when it starts moving enough fast then release the clutch.100 % works...

  • @MichaelKingVids

    @gsxelf correct , if you jump on the bike and "bump" it i.e run , swing you leg over , sit on the bike with it rolling then stand up on the pedals and sit down pretty fast while releasing the clutch at the same time , you will do it "safely" because you will have better control of the bike

    I just had to push start my 07 FZ6 last night when it cut off on me at the traffic light and it wouldn't come back on :(. Luckily the crossing street was going downhill, so I just sat on the bike and pushed it with my legs on the 1st gear then released the clutch, gradually. It didn't start right away until the 3rd attempt - I guess I didn't have enough speed at first. Now I have to figure out if it's the alternator or the battery, but at least I am now back home with my bike :)

  • @jebova2301
    @jebova2301 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    on most bikes, if the clutch is out and its in first, it WILL NOT let the starter turn over. I didnt hear the starter turn at all in the video on this bike. it is just getting started from the weight of the bike turning over the engine and then firing. its pretty easy to do. anyone who rides should learn this trick.

  • @steelsporty
    @steelsporty 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Agreed on not using the starter motor. Once you've got a bit of speed up pushing the bike, leap on the bike sidesaddle (you may want to practice riding side-saddle before you have to do this, so you feel balanced and comfortable doing that, and don't fall off to the right!). As your weight hits the saddle, dump the clutch. The jarring of your weight will stop the rear wheel from skidding and turn the motor over. Be ready to pull the clutch lever in immediately the engine fires.

    I have a problem with my 50cc sports bike. I attempted doing this.. So close to turning on from the sound but it's not getting enough power to turn on. From the amount of attempts I've tried I think I should try cleaning the spark plug. Any suggestions on how to turn it on? Thanks!

    • @shaykai
      @shaykai  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      NotOfficiallySean It could be a lot of things. Is the gas in the tank really old? That can cause problems starting, especially if it has sat unused all winter. Could be the sparkplugs maybe. I would recommend putting the battery on a trickle charger or replacing it if you have the funds to do so.

    • @NotOfficiallySeanHD
      @NotOfficiallySeanHD 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I've had the engine rebuilt and the battery replaced not so long ago, Roughly a month.. It's been working fine I had it running yesterday morning and then a couple hours later... Wouldn't even start... I'm guessing the spark plug may be covered in petrol? I've had that problem before but I'm not 100% sure yet.

    I push-started my 2008 Ninja 250R a few times. Once it was impossible without a hill, you riding it down (coasting), and with the throttle held wide open. That time my tach was wacky for hours.

  • @etraderx11
    @etraderx11 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    I also used to push-start my 99 Bandit (long time gone) and it was a lot easier than my FZ6. I would only need a very little speed to get that thing going, although I don't remember if I was doing it on 1st or 2nd gear. I did my FZ6 at 1st gear last night - and it was hard. Now that I am thinking, I should've tried it at 2nd - it should have less resistance and make it easier to crank the engine, but I could be wrong. Maybe I'll try that next. :)

  • @emergencylowmaneuvering7350

    Before pushing it, you have to have it in HIGHEST GEAR with the clutch
    pressed of course, push it, then release clutch ; and press the clutch again to keep engine alive.
    Higher gear will make the engine turn more, and bump is less too.
    Easier push start.. Lower gear will resist turning the engine and bump more.

    @hootini88 that depends on the piston's size and the compression ratio, the bigger the piston and comprssion, the more speed you have to gain so the force is enaugh to move the pistons.
    P.S. I didn't say that you have to push the bike to an exact speed.

  • @kutsy3785
    @kutsy3785 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just for the OP's information, you were not able to put it into second because the bike was stationary.
    Alot of kawasaki models have this feature where when stationary, you can only put it into neutral and first gear, not higher. This is to make it easier for people to put neutral instead of going into 2nd gear when shifting up.
    Since you pushed a bike slightly, you were able to put it into 2nd gear.

    • @shaykai

    ok for everyone who is about to try this dont!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    you dont press the electric start while moving (its dead remember :D) it could damage the starter motor.. just put it in second, run as fast as you can and jump on the bike!!!! dont just walk beside it!! then dump the clutch out and wen the engine starts turning pull the clutch back in and give a little throttle!

  • @jimbo80982
    @jimbo80982 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @zombies8alaska no , you shouldnt do it every time , you should bump start it to get you back home then find the problem and fix it. I dont reccomend trying to bump start it all the time (thought it is possible) but its just an inconvieniece , and for what? the price of a trickle charger? If your bike starts with a kick start you shouldnt have to do that tho , ever , because no electricity is used in starting the bik (no electrically generated spark)

    well, judging from my car which is a five speed, you should be able to drop the clutch in second while you roll it and it should start. I did the same thing with my car on a hill one time and it started in fifth. i guess it's cuz the bike/car runs with the key ON not with the key at START.

    Its hard to get it in 2nd gear without moving the bike foward as this is what the zx gear selector is like,so it makes it easier to find neutral,,,look in the manual lol I used to wonder why

    Can I do this with my busa?

  • @MrSlowestD16
    @MrSlowestD16 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why it doesn't want to go into 2nd? lol Sequential gear boxes rely on them being moving. If you try to shift gears on a bike while it's still, what you do is: Put light pressure up/down, roll the bike one direction or the other. It'll click right in, yes, even if the clutch is disengaged. You're not supposed to be trying to shift gears with it stopped...so you move it a little to mitigate this :).

      +Jake Hassell Haha very true. I also sing to myself when on a motorcycle, but I definitely don't want to record that. Haha

    i push start mine by popping the clutch and twisting the throttle not pushing the starter. but both work fine. ur method didn't work for my bike though.

    well there was a couple of us and we were rolling it slightly down hill. Once we had the car running though, I did not shut the engine off till it was time to go home.

    I assume this bike is non-carbeurated?

    • @shaykai
      @shaykai  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are incorrect, this bike is carbureted, not fuel injected. It's a 2001, so it's pretty old!

      John Alvarado I can't even start mine while holding in the clutch. I think it's so you don't accidentally start in gear.

      The clutch safety switch disables the starter. This doesn't apply to bump starting for obvious reasons

    Thankfully I have an area that is big enough for another battery so I can always jump myself. And I zip tie cables under the front fender. I took the kickstarter off.

    the reason y it wont go into 2nd gear easy from stop is because bikes have a POSITIVE NEUTRAL FINDER SYSTEM otherwise when you stop you would be clicking 2nd gear when you want neutral
