- Why I think more people should watch Hirokazu Koreeda's masterpiece, After Life (1998). The man is a true maestro of cinema and even though cinephiles would know his work, I would like to reach out to the everyday moviegoer to give Koreeda's work a shot.

Aside from the above short film link, I do not own any other of the other corresponding content in this video.

After Life is one of my all time favorite films.
same here!
I saw it in theatre when it came out in 1998. I didn't know anything about it going in, didn't realize at first that the characters were dead. It really moved me and has stayed with me.
I found a copy of After Life at my library recently and it completely blew me away. One of the most profound and beautiful films I have ever seen, thanks for bringing it to other people's attention!
Really appreciate the kind words! I love After Life and the way Koreeda's mind works.
I remember watching this movie on DVD in 2004 when I learned about Koreeda (when "Nobody Knows" became an international sensation that year.) Indeed this is one of those movies that stays in your mind forever. Not as heartbreaking as "Nobody Knows" but equally compelling.
saw it last night and haven't been able to stop thinking about it, the scene where mochizuki is filming his memory on the bench and the sudden cut to the film crew essentially breaking the 4th wall by "filming" the viewer really shocked me. Almost like Kore-eda is filming our reaction to this film, which will one day become a memory the first time we saw it.
Love that interpretation! I honestly agree because it would be so in line with Kore-eda's style 👍
What memory would you choose to bring to the afterlife?
Damn thank you for bring this to my attention it’s very interesting to me. Great video too I’ll be sticking around :)
Yes After Life is cinema 🙏 Thank you for the support!
Koreeda never disappoints, after I watched monster I can’t help but go through all the rest of his movies
Same here! He's really underrated for the consistent quality of his films these days.
Good video essay. ❤
