    WinRAR is one of the most iconic pieces of software out there, not because it’s useful or instrumental but because of its famous 40-day trial period that never expires. This isn’t some glitch or bad programming either, WinRAR is well aware of this bypass and it’s very much instrumental. You see, WinRAR doesn’t make their money from daily users; they make their money from businesses. And the easiest way to get businesses to use WinRAR is to get the public on their side which is exactly what they’ve done by making it essentially free for everyday people. While companies could easily just pirate WinRAR as well, it’s usually not worth the consequences due to the reputational damage that would follow if this got leaked. As a result, large companies don’t think twice about paying for WinRAR especially given how cheap it is. And given that WinRAR still pulls in $21 million per year despite its popularity falling off a cliff over the past decade, it’s clear that this strategy was still rather lucrative. Nowadays, some of the biggest companies in the world leverage a similar strategy such as Google, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. This video explains the rise and business model of WinRAR and why WinRAR’s 40-day trial period lasts forever.

      Well anything important these days compresses itself, for instance this youtube video compresses and decompresses itself after transfering data without us touching any programs or files. in 2022 the file is usually much bigger than a self extractor component making compressed files make no sense as they could have been self extracting without sacrificing even a single percent in size and still dropping 20% file size.

    I believe you got that backwards. in the 80's virtually all compression was lossless because lossy compression was only really useful for pictures and movies. They existed on computers back then but there wasn't enough of it to matter. WinRAR is a proprietary lossless compression. That being said it also supports some non-winrar algorithms so maybe it does now via those. I personally haven't seen WinRAR in decades so yea.... maybe.

    • @Thornskade
      @Thornskade 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Ehh Adobe is much more critical. For starters, unlike Windows and WinRAR, there is no legitimate free forever download that only nags you to activate or pay up. You straight up have to go to shady sites or use torrents. Worse, there is no single payment option anymore, legitimate usage requires you to pay for a subscription. This puts specifically students in an awful situation. I was one, and our school did not provide a license for home use. I could not and did not want to afford a subscription, and I ended up getting Gimp with a "almost-like-photoshop" plugin. But it wasn't the exact same and the setup was difficult, making it more confusing to actually learn to use the software.
      This is a horrendous situation for students. It would be for the better if the industry ditched Adobe software and used free and open source software like Photoshop, Krita and what have you,

    • @thewitheredstriker
      @thewitheredstriker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Thornskade Yeah I agree. I'm willing to purchase software, but only if I can just pay for it once; no subscriptions. I'd be much more inclined to use Adobe software if I could pay a reasonable sack of money once and then own the software.
      Personally I'm fine with the industry using whatever works best for them, whether that software be proprietary or FOSS. Ultimately, both have ups and downs. If you use a FOSS app that works better for you than a non-FOSS one, great! If you paid for a proprietary app that works better for you than a FOSS app, nice! You should really use whatever works best. (Photoshop isn't FOSS btw, you probably got a bit confused there :P)
      Back to Adobe, though, I generally tend not to use their software, not only because of the SaaS model but also because of poor performance and lag, which is probably the result of clunky codebases (A stupid unspoken rule in the high-end software industry is that programmers are rewarded for the amount of lines of code they write, not the actual quality of the code, this leads to many coders writing verbose and inept boilerplate code to get a promotion for more lines); Acrobat alone already performs like shit on my PC, and it's literally a gaming rig. I traded Photoshop for Paint.net, After Effects for Nuke, Premiere Pro for VSDC (possibly a stopover until I can get Vegas or something like it), Illustrator for Inkscape and am looking to pickup something like Moho or Synfig instead of Animate.
      Lastly, while their software is pretty great, and in my unpopular opinion, honestly quite better than Blender in many ways (although I still use it sometimes due to the lack of a price tag), Autodesk pulls some crappy stunts with their business model too. It's also unfortunate how Maya receives all their attention as an animation tool while 3DS Max (my preferred tool so far; what shame that it's also locked behind a subscription) is left as a backwater, though tbh I guess that's what happens when you acquire competing products (like when Adobe had to handle both Flash and Shockwave, both of which had many of the same use cases).
      Anyway that's it for my little ted talk, lol. Thanks for hearing out a random amateur coder's and aspiring artist's ramblings.

    Another way to avoid the popup window is just to use another utility that supports opening RAR files . . . personally, I use 7zip. One thing that is curious is that 7zip isn't more popular, as it can compress as about much as RAR and has no nag window. Although to be fair, these days these types of formats are used more for storing many files in a convenient package rather than saving space, so ZIP is the best option for the vast majority of uses.

      I temporarily switched to 7zip about 7 years ago, but I didn't like it that much. For me, the UI was somehow more inconvenient. I guess I had learned to love all the small features of WinRAR. Anyway, I switched back a few weeks later after noticing that 7zip took almost one hour to compress a big folder with a lot of files into a ZIP, which WinRAR compressed in under 10 minutes. (The compression tool built into Windows even took multiple times as long as 7zip trough.) Anyway, that might well be a problem of the past. I am currently using 7zip at work, but I am not compressing that large folders, so I can't really judge that.

    I'm using VBscripts to automatically make backups, encrypt file names, set a password, store it on a disk and be able to easily replace original files with the contents of the rar file.
    With Winzip or other compressors you will run into problems if you're expecting privacy/security/control on your file.

      Then PKZIP, ARC, 7-ZIP, RZIP and other compression or archiving backup techniques and technologies (like: JAR & XML)
      Don't forget, ZIP brought up what was called zip bombs. Where you unzipped the archive and it exploded in gigantic file sizes. It was always funny on April 1st but not while you were at work. Lol
      I feel like this YT channel keeps churning out videos that are not fully researched. Only because he stops looking up facts or pre-history of the topic and just jumps to a conclusion either of his own or found elsewhere.

    I use winrar, also we all use it at work. I work at, what is also a 'very lean' software company. We make about 4 million in revenue a year, while having about a dozen workers.
    We just slowly add features to and update a software thats been servicing hundreds of companies, many of which are also fortune 500 companies, since like 1991. The company has been around for a while, and has met a lot of companies, and we work just pretty much anyone who ships goods. This software company, we sell packaging/palletization/truck-loading optimization software.
    We just charge companies a few thousand up front for licenses, and charge smaller yearly fees for mainetnance and updates for that license, which just lasts forever as long as you're paying your maintenance subscription, which you can let lapse too. You don't need too much at all to keep businesses like this afloat, as long as there's at least someone who still has use your products.

    But as was mentioned in this video, who really needs the compression in this day and age? Like, a couple of MBs off of a 100s of MB archive. I don't use archive files for compression, I use them so I can easily have a collection of files put into one place, I could use .tar if I wanted to. there is more to why scene / piracy sites use .RAR , the ability to have to only redownload a single corrupted .RAR factors in too

    I think your argument that piracy is reason why windows is popular is wrong, it's a factor but I think the mean reason is that it was easier for any user to use this gaining traction in office and personal space. Then as it got more wide spread it got all the software that anyone required for their use. Also windows was often the first os most people used. Linux is usually free so should be easiest to access but the ubiquity of windows means on pc windows is king.

    I think there are still a lot of use for winrar and true that for everyday people they wouldn't see how annoying it is to close the topup screen everytime.
    In companies even for new ones it is easy to zip a file and send it to your colleagues instead of sending the whole 4gb file you have on your device, it is faster to upload and download that way using services in the cloud, ofc it's only useful when you aren't at the workplace yourself where you can simply put it on the server and all, but like now at work at home the cloud is a go to.

    I use WinRAR because while I don't need file compression for storage reasons, I do need it to send files over the internet, or to download files from the internet. Most mods for games I play use compressed files on file hosting sites so that you can download their mod for free and they don't have to spend money hosting their own file sharing site.

    winrar for some reason specifically locked me out of the 'extract files...' option, so now I have to use 1 extra step to move the zipped file to the desired location then click 'extract here'
