      It's less a concious thought and more like "Okay, fuck MacReady. This bastard is the only human left, and I can't seem to stop him! Fuck it! I'm pulling out............... ALL THE STOPS" It's more about Blair-Thing's desparation and growing *anger* that MacReady won't just leave it alone and let it do its thing.
      That, and it was the end of the move, the final Thing, and comparable to a "final boss" so from a director's stand point, yeah they wanted to go all out. This isn't even as far as they wanted to take it, they originally planned Garry and Nauls being a part of Blair-Thing.

      @@Skycrusher Yeah, apparently Nauls was in the middle of being devoured and assimilated, and he would have cried out for help while being impaled by tentacles. I think it would have made MaCready's "Fuck you too" more powerful.

      @@andyroobrick-a-brack9355 According to a storyboard on Outpost 31, Nauls is trapped in a wooden locker or cabinet, and Blair-Thing is surrounding it about to get him. He claws and pulls splinters of wood from a plank and impales himself in the mouth it, effectively committing suicide to avoid Blair-Thing. This would have made Blair-Thing unable to assimilate Nauls' dead flesh however. Lots of room to wonder how differently the movie woulda turned out had John had the budget and time he wanted.

    There's something about good ol' stop motion in horror movies that makes it a lot more disturbing than any CGI effect could hope to be. I'm not sure what it is though.

      I think it has gotta be something about the slightly off-balance, jagged motion that stop motion has that makes it so off putting.

    • @aaronbuffalo7769
      @aaronbuffalo7769 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Na it looked too different so they scrapped the stop motion . but. I think that despite how good these effects were at the time people are right in saying how they look far too cumbersome and robotic these days to get that realistic effect going. For 30 years ago it is still damn impressive mind.

    For stop motion I actually think it's not too bad. Honestly the tentacles that did make it into the movie are probably the worst looking movement in my opinion. I don't know, the movement just seems too fast. The one thing I don't like about it is the Blair parts of the monster, I like how the parts in the movie he looks like he's in pain and his arm is just moving around unnaturally, but in the stop motion he's staring maliciously at Mac with his hands down calmly. It kind of clashes with what I like about this design, where it looks like the human part is in constant pain because the monster part taking over the body, almost like there's still a part of Blair left but it's long gone and impossible to save. This just seems unsubtle and over the top.
