    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Attacked by a giant mutation of the Thing, Macready (Kurt Russell) blows it up, and a large part of the base, with dynamite.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    John Carpenter's The Thing is both a remake of Howard Hawks' 1951 film of the same name and a re-adaptation of the John W. Campbell Jr. story "Who Goes There?" on which it was based. Carpenter's film is more faithful to Campbell's story than Hawks' version and also substantially more reliant on special effects, provided in abundance by a team of over 40 technicians, including veteran creature-effects artists Rob Bottin and Stan Winston. The film opens enigmatically with a Siberian Husky running through the Antarctic tundra, chased by two men in a helicopter firing at it from above. Even after the dog finds shelter at an American research outpost, the men in the helicopter (Norwegians from an outpost nearby) land and keep shooting. One of the Norwegians drops a grenade and blows himself and the helicopter to pieces; the other is shot dead in the snow by Garry (Donald Moffat), the American outpost captain. American helicopter pilot MacReady (Kurt Russell, fresh from Carpenter's Escape From New York) and camp doctor Copper (Richard Dysart) fly off to find the Norwegian base and discover some pretty strange goings-on. The base is in ruins, and the only occupants are a man frozen to a chair (having cut his own throat) and the burned remains of what could be one man or several men. In a side room, Copper and MacReady find a coffin-like block of ice from which something has been recently cut. That night at the American base, the Husky changes into the Thing, and the Americans learn first-hand that the creature has the ability to mutate into anything it kills. For the rest of the film the men fight a losing (and very gory) battle against it, never knowing if one of their own dwindling number is the Thing in disguise. Though resurrected as a cult favorite, The Thing failed at the box office during its initial run, possibly because of its release just two weeks after Steven Spielberg's warmly received E.T.The Extra-Terrestrial. Along with Ridley Scott's futuristic Alien, The Thing helped stimulate a new wave of sci-fi horror films in which action and special effects wizardry were often seen as ends in themselves.

    I think it's pretty clever how MacReady's character meets a sort of book-end here; at the beginning of the film, the chess computer managed to outsmart him, so he destroyed the computer. At the end of the film, the Thing managed to outsmart him, so he destroyed the outpost.

      I agree. This film, for the time, was a spectacular sci-fi horror film, and still is. It has held up very well and I consider it better than the new version by far. When you watch Carpenters "The Thing" today, you cannot believe the quality of FX (with no CG). Rob Bottin was very young and created nearly every major FX shot in the film (with the exception of the transformed dog, which was partially done by Stan Winston)
      Rob was 23 years old! WTF
      Way to go Rob!

    based on the dog creature coming out of the blair thing, and this could only happen if the cells had imitated a dog previously, i believe that blair became infected after doing the autopsy on the dog thing, so he must have had a few cells go into his body, slowly taking him, so when he gets cabin fever and starts going crazy trying to kill people, its not paranoia, his mind is being destroyed by the creature, before this he steals helicopter parts for the spaceship!

    Blairs face when that thing roars, like it still experiences his pain, i kind of wonder if all the individuals were still in there somewhere, literally just disconnected not quite there but all the memories absorbed and jumbled inside some fleshed out hell. If you look at Norris as an example, as he was absorbed from inside out, he looked like he was in agony the entire time, as if the transformation must have been so violently rapid it interferes with actual human awareness. He must have felt everything before he became *it* so to speak.

It knew how to cause paranoia amongst potential victims, build a flying saucer from scratch, and the first thing it does when going after MacReady is dragging the lever that activated the explosives down a hole. It's truly a terrifying creature when it comes to intelligence in addition to the obvious puke-inducing visuals.

    What was terrifying to me wasn't just the freaky, monstrous Blair-Thing staging a final attack on MacReady. It was the idea that the entire monster was just a *distraction,* something to keep MacReady busy while another, smaller part of itself scuttled off into the snow to freeze. The ending was one of the darkest, most ambiguous endings to a horror movie ever, and that perfectly reflected the paranoia that infused the entire story.

    I have read that whenever the Thing assimilates a host, it gains characteristics from that host including knowledge/memories and those will remain on the next host the Thing assimilates, that explains why Blair was able to build up a mini UFO beneath the tool shed, because the Thing may have assimilated the UFO Pilot and therefore, gain it's knowledge to construct an UFO, assuming the Pilot knew how to build it up.
    So that dog-like thing that emerges from Blair-Thing's chest is most likely from the dog-thing we saw before, so this could led us to think that the dog was the one that assimilated Blair.

      The dog being the one who assimilated Blair is a pretty good analysis I like it!@. I mean there are little clues that the director inserts in from time to time. But I dunno. Good eye though

    • @boondoxroxsox
      @boondoxroxsox 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The Dog-Thing definitely assimilated Palmer, who then assimilated Blair soon after he conducted his computer analysis. Blair conducted his tests before he was assimilated. It would make no sense for a Thing to conduct a test in private in a locked room. You can actually discern a rough timeline of assimilation by watching the movie carefully. Palmer was assimilated first, then Blair by Palmer, then while Blair is trashing the radio room Palmer is sabotaging the blood samples using the keys that Windows dropped when he saw Bennings being assimilated. Norris is assimilated by Palmer during a specific scene where neither of them appear around the rest of the crew (I think when Blair-Thing is being locked away, but don't quote me on that. I know for sure there is a scene where those two are missing while the rest of the station crew are gathered.) After that, no more people are assimilated until Childs is assimilated by Blair while Nauls, Gary and MacReady are checking Blair's shed. (The jury's out on that, but it makes sense to me that Childs was assimilated and then told by Blair to take shelter from the impending showdown to ensure that at least one of them would survive.)
      While that's only my opinion, if you go over it it does make the most sense. It leaves no room for error.

    • @skar8009
      @skar8009 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +boondoxroxsox No you're right, one of the producers confirmed that the shadow on the wall was intended to be Palmer, so the first character assimilated was Palmer. Palmer obviously assimilated Norris and probably Blair as well (my reason to doubt about Norris-Thing to assimilate him is that he got the heart-attack problem and it would have been hard for it to secretly go to infiltrate in the shed).
      I got my reasons to think that Childs was not a thing, like it make no sense for MacReady to survive against all the things in this film just to be killed/assimilated in a weak state at the end because one of the points here is that how can these few men deal with this smart alien parasite.
      I see it this way, you may agree or not with it: Blair was intended to be the main bad guy and they get rid of him, they won the battle but not the war, because they most likely died because of extreme cold afterwards. So you got a tragic ending.

    • @boondoxroxsox
      @boondoxroxsox 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Skar800 The script notations confirm that Mac had a flamethrower beneath his blanket ready to torch Childs in case Childs made a move on him. In the end, it doesn't matter if he was one or not. If he wasn't, they both freeze to death, and if he was, Mac will eventually kill him and die of hypothermia himself.
      Carpenter always wanted to do a sequel with Childs and Mac, so that lends credibility to the idea that Childs is human.

    • @boondoxroxsox
      @boondoxroxsox 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Skar800 Yeah. I think the rough timeline I've compiled is pretty accurate. The only thing we'll probably never know for sure is whether or not Childs was a Thing.

      The 2011 prequel was kind of underwhelming...for a "prequel" especially, at least in my opinion. And when you have the chemistry of Kieth David, Kurt Russell, and Wilford Brimley, under a directer like Carpenter, you have a movie that holds up well over the years. That's my opinion, anyways.

      Do you think The Thing from Another World was a good movie but a poor adaptation of the book? and do you agree that there is a difference between a remake (a movie based on a film produced earlier and an original screenplay like Ocean's 11 or Hills Have Eyes) and an adaptation (being another adaptation of source materials like comicsbooks/novellas lke The Thing or Moby Dick or Dracula)?

    • @williamsanders2439
      @williamsanders2439 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      ***** Considering the time it was filmed, it was a good movie, if not a true adaptation...it certainly is better than "Horror Express". But Carpenter's version is just the gold standard. It had the right mix of horror and suspense, and the special effects didn't overwhelm the film, like in the prequel. To be fair, the 50's were an entirely different era...the 1982 version wouldn't have even made it to storyboard, let alone past the censors of that time.
      And you can have the greatest source material, script and actors, but if you don't have the right director, you have the fiasco that is the latest Fantastic Four movie. The Dark Knight movies (NOT counting Joel Schumacher's jokes, or the '60s tv/movie version) are an interesting comparison. Both Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan really explored the character's dark personality and really breathed new life in the Bat.
      In the end, the finished work should at least capture the spirit of what inspired it. Sometimes you can't get a faithful adaptation...particularly on celluloid. Other times, it gets nailed, and you just KNOW it.

    I believe Resident Evil 7 has a reference to this!
    At one point Ethan (the protagonist) yells this at a boss.
    Also a lot of the enemies in the game (called Molded) have gaping maws growing out the top of their human skulls, much like the various incarnations of The Thing.

    The thing that the Thing doesn't seem to expect is the willingness to neglect one's very own self preservation in order to assure not just destruction of the thing, but mutual destruction on top of that ..

    • @thereisnosanctuary6184
      @thereisnosanctuary6184 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very good. The Thing isn't communist at all, it is very much a collective of individualists that will sacrifice and one up each other, but with an underlying sense of "as long as one of us make it" honour.
      The human beings in Antarctica are acting as antibodies for all of humanity and life on earth, sacrificing themselves to assure the things destruction, therefore saving all life on earth, particularly human life.
