Anyone who has even a mild feeling for languages will hear the difference from 2 miles away. They absolutely don't sound similar like, say, Swedish and Norwegian. They're really very different. Chinese sounds very round with a lot of diphthongs (ao, iu, ia etc.) and it's a tonal language (which Japanese isn't), so it sounds very bouncy and melodic. Chinese (especially Mandarin) also tends to sound quite guttural, similar to German or Dutch. Finally, Chinese is usually spoken rather loudly and it can sound aggressive. Japanese on the other hand has a sound reminiscent of Italian because it contains a lot of vowels and every consonant usually has to be paired with a vowel (for example a-ri-ga-to go-sai-ma-su). Japanese sounds a bit like waves washing up on a beach: quiet, elegant but also much more monotonous than Chinese. Finally, while Chinese sounds very slurred and like one endless stream of speech, Japanese sounds much more choppy and precise (staccato).
Same thing with Spanish and Portuguese. If you're not familiar with both languages, you may mistake one for the other. Just because you know your Japanese and Chinese doesn't mean others do.
