I find that sometimes a sketch that’s “bad” on its own actually looks good in the context of the entire sketchbook.

I'm not much of an artist and I made some attempts 10 years ago… And at the time I thought they were absolutely horrible and embarrassing. But I saved them. And when I got them out and looked at them I think, "oh my gosh! That's not bad at all"

I’ve experienced that so many times! For me, I think the reason is that I have an image in my head of how I think it should look and it never works out that way!! But then when I look at it again much later, I’ve forgotten about the image in my head and just see the drawing for what it actually is, not in comparison to my perfect imaginings!

Every artist has those disastrous pages in our sketchbook that we wish we could change or redo. I've come to realize that mistakes are our best teachers. Drawing is about seeing things as they are not as we think they are.

Exactly what I needed to hear... The most difficult of a bad drawing is the next one.

Thanks to this channel, I’m actually sketchbooking everyday. Each sketch is a souvenir for the day. I create some real whoppers some days, but I don’t regret any or throw any out. I just chuckle and say “More marks on the page!” Thanks Sketchbook Skool! ❤❤❤

I came across a quote by Edgar Allan Poe....Art is to look at Not to criticize. I wrote this on the first page of my current Sketch book to remind me to look at all my doodles, scribbles , drawings and any form of self expression in a positive way .... that is accepting all my efforts in doing them and always keeping in mind that there is always room for developing my art skills ! Thank you Danny for your time and invaluable encouragement. Warmest regards.... Lorraine 🎨

I did a drawing a day for three years and posted it on social media. I then looked back on it and I could not see any improvement. So I stopped and took a step back. Normally I have learned to do quantity over quality approach when creating. You go through find what works what doesn't work. I like this I don't like that then refine. I think where I went wrong was I didn't stretch I didn't reach far enough I stuck to the safe, the familiar. It was this place of safety that my art seemed flat repetitive stagnate, stale, not fun, boring. I am back to drawing again, for me the canvas doesn't matter, the art supplies do not matter. to be honest some of my favorite surprises were done using my fingers on a steamed up shower door. Did I spend a lot of time on it? no. Did I create? yes.
A side note: Although I did not see improvement drawing everyday for three years, I did learn to blow through creative block.

Hello, Danny! I'm from Ukraine, living abroad for 1 year far away from family and friends because of war, that changed my life totally and forever. Your channel appeared in recommendations so unexpectable and it was kind a sign, because i didn't watch videos about drawing to get such recommendation. I didn't think about drawing at all, it was buried in past, in childhood. And all that you are speaking about in your videos and podcasts is even more about humans being, about life, about fears and issues and how to get well with them! I began to draw bad drawing and i feel better than before! Thank you very much for sharing your life-story, your art and ideas! Wish you the best!

Lightbulb moment! Such a great true insight about bad drawings. It is a reminder to myself not to judge my skill level over something that just didn't reach that initial inspo that came to me. It means try again. Needed to hear this today! Thank you so much for sharing so generously your personal journey 🥰

I needed to hear this today. We had a teacher at our art group today who managed to make all of us feel that we are not good enough! She corrected and criticised but not once gave us any encouragement. Thank you 🙏

Art does not have to be good to serve its purpose. example: Peanuts, Calvin and Hobbs, the farside, bloom county, doonsberry, Dilbert...

Need to have this video at hand, to keep as a reminder.
I have this horrible habit of erasing drawings I'm not satisfied with. It goes to the point that I barely keep the will to draw until the end, even if I wanted to draw in the first place... It's hard to be enthusiastic about the next drawing (or even the same drawing) when I'll probably end up hating it anyway.

I put it on Instagram. I think it’s important to post the bad drawings along with the good, so everyone can see that I sometimes draw something good and sometimes bad, and that’s normal.

Thank you for this video , it has proved to me that to go over a drawing or painting can make it worse !! You are right because I’ve done this a few times on my drawings or paintings x therefore I am glad you pointed this mistake some of us do , by going over the work we’ve done x just be yourself & keep your mistakes as a reference of how well you’ve learnt from them !!! Thank you xx Helen Kirrage xx

I used to be SO paranoid about preserving a mistake in my sketchbooks. It got to the point to where that fear bled into my media use, afraid to waste it on a bad composition- but I eventually came to learn that a mistake is never a mistake if you learned something from it. And that’s hard to do if you can’t look back at your work and progress.

I keep them to use as scrap paper or in future collages or I gesso the surfaces and re-use the sheet in a freshish piece. I have 3 large boxes of such materials. 🤭

My sketchbooks have SO many bad drawings though. I get frustrated looking at them. I'm no beginner either. I'm pretty astonished and impressed by the people who do flip-through videos of their own books and every page is a well done, finished piece. I honestly don't understand how they pull that off. I don't want to do that, I think there should be pages of just scribbly nothings or practices too. But I would like to move closer to that ideal.

    • @SketchBookSkool
      @SketchBookSkool  2 ปีที่แล้ว

My approach: I use my sketchbook as a journal and try to tell a visual story on each page. It's not about some random drawing here or there, it's about something with meaning to me. Even if the drawing;s not "perfect", the meaning remains.

didn't someone say that every beginner has 1000 bad drawings inside them - they just have to get them out in order to start getting at the good ones?
    or was it 10000?

If I do something in my sketchbook that's really bad and it's going to bother me every time I see it I just cut it out. 🤷😂

And a sketchbook is for……? Break the perfection cycle? Be the creative kid? Try a new idea? Some days I just fine it restful to piddle on paper. It is not going anywhere. Am I?
