The issue for me is the disconnect between what was told it would be versus what we got. If it was marketed as a fun, light hearted summer album it’d be perfect. But the dark costuming for performances and being told it would be psychedelic but we got what we did is confusing. It’s not a bad album, just marketed wrong.

i think when future nostalgia was released it had the current state of the world and music industry to help it be this massive album (and its amazing - I'm not hating on it at all) and really boost the visibility of it while i think radical optimism has those things working against it a bit. everyone and their mother is releasing music this year and its just been overshadowed in a flooded market. when future nostalgia came out, the world was basically shut down and no one else was releasing music at the time.

I think the label forced her to make some last minute changes and rebrand the album as a summer album, because otherwise it doesn’t make sense that Dua was promoting it as psychedelic/experimental britpop and the only psychedelic songs are Houdini and training season, the rest are just generic pop songs lol, and also dropping this year was a BIG mistake with everyone dropping albums. I loove dua but the concept of this project was not strong enough to stand out from the rest unfortunately 😢

It’s a missed opportunity. Dua said that Radical Optimism would be “psychedelic” and a “tribute” to UK rave culture. It’s none of those things. It’s pop. Worse, songs like Falling Forever are Eurovision trash. I wish that she’d taken her sound edgier, sexier and more experimental (as she promised).

She needs to have another album next year. This album isn't going to have the longevity she hopes it does, her trajectory really reminds me on jessie ware's trajectory. This album is her glasshouse but i know her next will be a classic especially considering how dua really pays attention to what the streets are saying and she works on it.
I think my problem with RA is what she made us believe it would be. I was really excited about the direction because it really was giving evolution but the final result was so disappointing, especially considering who she was working with.
I do feel like she has the experimental version but the label pushed her to release a safer version because of how Houdini never took off.

People look at Future Nostalgia with rose coloured glasses tbh. People just miss the ERA, while in reality, a lot of big hits and moments from that era aren't even on the original album.. and that moment had very questionable moments as well like "Good in bed", where the chorus almost sounds like a sheep or goat. To me, as a Tame Impala fan, this album hits all the right places. It's summery, it's a good vibe and I still think "Houdini" feels like a modern "Thriller". This just reminds me of those pop albums from 2008-2014 and I'm happy at least 1 artist is just giving happy vibes without overthinking too much.

  • @darlinarlin2661

Since the album dropped I feel like I've been the only person enjoying it, like it's so good to me. It's clearly not FN, is not as iconic and exceptional, but I still really enjoy it for what it is. I think that Dua's biggest mistake has been describing the record as "psycodelic" (don't know how to write that word btw). I personally didn't know that the album was supposed to go into that direction, so I just enjoyed it as it was. I thought the whole aesthetic was supposed to be "super saturated mediterrarean summer", which is basically Dua's Instagram's aesthetic, so I really thought it was great and suited Dua amazingly. It was when I entered the internet that I saw people upset. I'm sad that people might be missing out on a great album and vibe, just because it was not what they expected (songs like Maria or French exit 🤩) Now I'm curious about the deluxe version, will it go in a more psycodelic direction, which I suppose was the initial direction of the album and they might have songs with that vibe? Or will it continue with the Mediterranean summer vibes? Anyway I just want good music.

I might be stretching, but it's the Americans that are having issues with this album. This album, as a European, is so euphoric and summery I love it. It reminds me of chilling on a beach in Italy at sunset or something, I can't describe it. Everybody here is loving it, and she stayed true to her Euro-pop roots like she said she would! Album of the summer to me

Agree with you, specially when it comes to the aesthetic disconnect of the album. I liked the album, but I was expecting something different. Another problem I think it was the timing of release. Radical Optimism was released not that long after TS’s ttpd, and the albums are very different, but as a fan of both singers my attention was on TS and decoding the lyrics in her album, and I forgot about Dua’s album. And right now I find myself listening to ttpd on repeat and I keep forgetting about Dua’s. And there is just not enough time in a day to go back to radical optimism and find my true favorite songs. Maybe in the future, but right now is not a priority.

it’s easy to look at an album or song’s chart debut placement and base your perception of the its performance on that, but what matters is longevity. yes, radical optimism debuted at number two in the US, but it’s currently receiving fewer daily streams on spotify than sour, an album released three years ago. it also had a lower spotify debut than future nostalgia.

I’m a total Dua Lipa stan, and I love this album so much. But, I love every part of your review and agree with everything you said. I do think the album is a total grower and the more you listen, the more you realize how cohesive and well thought out it all is. And she did get experimental with the production using a variety of different sounds that are a psychedelic and trippy electro pop versus disco. And I do think it has a more organic feel of a band working in a studio together like she said. The production and hooks are excellent, the vocals superb. But yes, it definitely didn’t match up to all of her pre-release descriptions.

Dua just came off a HUGE album so the difference is a bit more glaring.

It seems like she may have created loads of songs in the process, most actually experimental and as she described, but her team last minute chose the most ‘safe’ options for her, the most generic pop sounding songs and singles for more sales. Which would make sense why they suddenly change the aesthetic and album cover. When in reality it backfired and people are disappointed and no one’s talking or buzzing about the album

I've been a dua fan since her debut album, and I haven't been able to stop listening to radical optimism since it came out and I feel like this is her strongest album yet. I think they originally meant to make a darker album (considering how she described the album) but switched it to a more summery vibe since it would be too similar to future nostalgia and that would've been too confusing. also the fact that she's predominantly a pop artist meant that she definitely wasn't going to go down any experimental paths like the first description she gave us of the album said. I can hear a lot of britpop influence, but calling it psychedelic and inspired by rave culture was a huge mistake. in my opinion, radical optimism is a really stable album but future nostalgia was a masterpiece and gave people higher expectations for this album, I still think both albums are 10/10s anyways

Everyones mistake is in perceiving her as anything more than an influencer who makes tasteful pop. And thats not a bad thing. Continue to see her as what she is and enjoy what you get imo (unless you dont of course) because the product is decent. Shes not Lady Gaga or Billie Eilish and she doesnt need to be. And quite honestly i dont even think she markets herself that way so im confused by the comments here.

Dua is facing a cold shoulder because of her activism for Palestine & her call for ceasefire. It’s all political. She was the media’s darling before that. Radical optimism is a great album. Taylor & Beyonce are hyped coz they have stayed silent & played the game.

Honestly, if she wants the album to be experimental, she could maybe do a test run with one single as this seems to be a major problem with the label according to the comments here. Also, I feel that she should probably be discreet with her words just so people won't be disappointed at all.

i listened to the album same day it dropped because my spotify was not having my LTE connection, and it was the only thing i could force it to play. i love dua, but i was gonna save it for later, but i definitely agree with your points. its a good album, dua slayed, but it's not future nostalgia, and its not breaking boundaries as much as dua's second album.
like radical optimism is coming out the same year as tyla's first album, smarter by le sserafim, and with you-th by twice, all of which have the same summer pop slay. none of these are the same genre or soundscape at all, but they got the same VIBES. future nostalgia made more waves because it was so different from what was dropping at the time. radical optimism isn't. it's not copying or basic or anything like that, but it is not doing anything that makes you go "WOAH THATS NEW THIS YEAR" you know?
dua slayed, and its gonna be a hit, it's just not an instant hit. which is perfectly fine. but also numbers are not everything, and frankly i dont care about the numbers, cuz whatcha doing and houdini are so good i dont even care ahaha
edit: agreed fully on the album cover thing too. we were ROBBED.

The album is honestly magic to my ears. FN truly set the bar way deep into outer space and I don't think I'll ever stop streaming it BUT RO is also filled with bangers. Ever since I heard it for the first time I often find myself singing a random song from the album and it's always a different one. Seems to me that I can't even find a favourite, they are just that good.
That said, it is true that Houdini, Training Season and Illusion carry a certain mood that the rest just don't, which was surprising but not a deal breaker at all.
Even though I love the album (it's the first album record I ever bought lol) I doubt that it will be the album of the year due to the questionable marketing. That's not a bad thing though, those awards and numbers literally mean nothing. It's so much more vital that Dua does what she likes and develops her style into a direction she enjoys. And who knows? She's the queen of sleeper hits so I wouldn't be surprised if ANY of the songs become viral in a few months

I didn’t really keep up with all the promo and info leading up to the release of the album, but I will say I was confused about the album cover cos when she released training season, I thought that was both the name of the album and the cover. I’m not a musical visionary so I don’t know how it would flesh out in 9ish songs but Houdini felt like it fit for the training season vibe too ? I think the album was okay to be honest but I didn’t have enough care to be as upset/disappointed as others

I think the release timing maybe not the best also? For me I was waiting to listen to it but it took so long to release since houdini and they released it now right after Taylor Swift dropping two albums that got a lot of people busy reacting to them... I myself was so busy with Taylor's songs that I waited a couple of days to listen to Dua's album

i really didn’t like this album lol, and i generally like her music. i think the name was a huge turnoff for me for some reason, maybe because i prefer significant music lol and if not, like a dark vibe aka physical, a bop. i liked houdini danny l harle’s mix, it sounds sooo different from the released version and i love it. but RO just didn’t do it for me, save for “whatcha doing?”, “maria” and “falling forever”. for me, to like 3/10 songs is pretty bad lmao, i generally would just discard 1-3 songs. so, yeah… fn was that girl and i loved the deluxe, too. imo, she should really do a spin on her music, and actually come out with something new for her. cuz where is the promised psychedelic vibe? i imagined sth ultraviolence-esque lana del rey, but i see i was very far off :D.
anyway, hit me hard and soft is out and omg i’m in love. album of the year is def between HMHS and TTPD. masterpieces.

Its a little confusing because the alternate cover vinyl has an insert with photos that kind of match the alleged "original" aesthetic. Judging by the writing dates on the songs they did have another writing session after the singles but meh whatever. The album is good.

i was excited for this album bc i thought it would be music for the girls who are in the dance studio all day, who wear layers and layers of clothes that don’t match but they can find a way to pull off, who are just cool, like in houdini and illusion music videos and the training season vibe and title. like, that’s for sure where it was headed. look at the training season merch. the ac milan looking football shirt. plus the britpop, massive attack reference. it WAS a whole different album. it WASNT this sleepy chilling at the beach thing. anyway…

People love the chart numbers and it's wild. Who cares if it's number 1 or not. Not every album needs to hit number 1 for it to be good. Just because it hits #1 does not mean it's good. Also, y'all crave change until the change isn't what you expected. Listen to music for the music and not if it's top 10 in billboard.

Calling such succes "fluke" or "coincidence" is could be the most ridiculous thing Ive ever heard. At this point, she cannot goes into her flop era with an unsuccessful album. Also, Radical Optimism is not a bad album, but her team had mistakes in PR and promotion.

The songs on the album were good actually but everything else went wrong
The vibe of the album completely changed to summer vibe thus Singles like Houdini and training seasons didn’t make sense or really fit the album if it’s the summer vibe ur going for .and top of that she released the single back in nov which is a big no no if it’s supposed to fit the summer album vibe .
I also feel the singles were not the best for the album if this was the theme , they should have gone with illusion , these walls , falling forever and close the era with end of an era . That would fit the whole aesthetic of the album .

I don't think the album is a flop by any means. BUT with that being said, I just feel two things happened with this release. First it will almost be impossible for Dua to duplicate the success of Future Nostalgia it was just way to huge. Same thing happened to Katy Perry after teenage dream. Second she released three singles months and months before the album even came out, so by the time the album came out those tracks were already kind of "old" to our ears by that time...

I’m more upset about what she promised but the actual album isn’t bad. It’s just a light summer album. But is it something anyone can sing… kinda. It just doesn’t feel like this is Dua Lipa. It just feels pop girly. Too radio friendly… like FN any song could be a single. And this newer album lyrically is very thematically repetitive and surface level most of the time. Like maybe she needs to pull a Taylor and released the scrapped songs, maybe get the fans involved in choosing?

the album is cute, i just want her to succeed and this won't do it. i'm not excited about it, i don't even wanna see a tour for it. all the highlights of the album came out before the release making the little that's left feel...just okay! if you liked the singles you're not missing out on the album.

  • @MarcinDiering
    @MarcinDiering 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

We can't expect her to be always on top. We can't expect it at all from every other artist. In general expecting is so... bad and often brings sad dissonance. She set the bar high with FN because every song there was a well made radio friendly potential hit. On RO she experimented and because of it it's not that catchy with first listen. Like French exit is weird and sounds nothing like Dua, anything for love is cute but too short and singles are different from the rest of the songs. I also think 'psychodelic' was big, misleading word and we had different expectations. Also for many 'psychodelic' seems much more experimental that it shouldn't be 'radio friendly' but at the same time 'it's Dua' so she can't do wrong because she didn't on Future Notalgia :D so she should release only hits. It should be promoted more as 'euphoric summer album, maturing, changing perspective, experimantal melodies'. To me it's good. I really like that album. I love the visuals. Music videos for this era are on top.

People expect it to sound like FN, which is the wrong perception to have overall, Dua even mentoned that RO does definitely have a select few dance elements from future nostalgia, but at the same time she has also mentioned how there are elements of DL1 that she's brought back in a more polished form in this record. It's a shame that some of her "fans" expect her to sonically stick to FN only, thinking that all she is here for is to bring back disco, completely disregarding DL1. Real ones will be able to hear some of the DL1 elements and will appreciate it, hence why (I think) RO is her most consistent album front to back, no skips for me.
(However, FN is still my personal all-time favourite, but I like pretty much her whole discography anyway.)
