Dude's a beast but the best thing about him is he really IS that dude- always humble, always encouraging. Used to play with him at Perfecting Faith in Freeport around 2003 or so. He probably won't remember, but dude is tough on the keys. BLESS you man
That method of listening to yourself play in that alone time is so important to me. It's not practice time but a time to understand how and why chords work together
We can laugh at how we used to play back then, but let's not forget how important our talent was at the time. We may not have been the extraordinary maestros we thought we were, but we were relevant for the time. Some musicians still play the old fashioned way. Let's show them the very same respect that we received.
What a blessing to hear your playing. I'm a pianist, one of my main heroes being Keith Jarrett. I think when we touch the instrument with the thought of " trying to sound good", we're no longer allowing the flow of sounds to take their path and their own course. Its the same with expressing yourself with words. You have to surrender and become a vehicld for whatever needs to be expressed, naturally. Of course, you do your home work. Whatever sounds and textures belong to your being will be part of your sonic repertoire. I'm a white male and wished I had the childhood experience of going to black churches to absorb some of their incredible magic of sound. That visceral, warm approach. But we must learn along the way to "know our uniqueness", to appreciate our own ways. Once Keith Jarrett told Marian McPartland, "you have what you have, I have what I have, no need to compare". Thank you from my heart. Gustavo
What you said about mistakes is so real. I've actually found several progression variations in my mess ups. Look at me talking like I know something. I don't. That was just the proper way to verbalize my experience. I'm a mediocre journeyman pianist with an expert's ear. My hearing frustrates me sometimes because I can hear much better than I can actually play. lol.
Hey sir my name is Darrell Evans I enjoyed your masterclass mix teaching I've been fan of the piano since I was 5 years old and had a desire even at that young age to play I've never actually done anything that really leads me to Ward's fulfill that desire get I still had a desire I write songs requires that haven't been published or even copy written as well as gospel rap what I'm wanting to know is what do I need to do 2 fulfill what some people would now think is a bucket list item that has been a long life desire of mine I'm 48 years old and there's something intricately spectacular in my spirit every time I hear a piano play Stay Blessed hope this message finds you well I pray you'll be able to assist
I want to say thank you for sharing this video, I was thinking I was going to learn a bunch of chord progressions but what I have gotten out of this was more spiritual than I expected. you said there is something valuable in the mistakes, the little I learnt by ear has been literally through mistakes. Also I realized that I need to find more time to listen to my self and the spirit. l am learning again to listen to the spirit and this video just inspired me more. thank you.
I just found an awesome piano learning course which I know you are going to love. The course teaches you how to play piano professionally Here is the link >>> EasyPianoLessons5.blogspot.com
This was a splendid lecture! There is so much in playing that is very subtle, very nuanced. In your discussion you pulled the covers off of those issues. But you also reminded us of the fundamentals 1 make sure the melody is still recognizable ( reharming is good as long as your listeners/congregants are still engaged with what they're hearing ) 2 you must be able to play in all twelve keys. At last I've met you. While I've found this encounter intellectually engaging, on an intuitive level you're serving a deeply spiritual, Godly purpose. Thank God for His Grace working through you. ☺😎
This is really an inspiration to me, even though im just a beginner but this has really enlightened my spirit and love for music..... I will surely get there one-day
Ah Ha Moment? -- "Listen To You!" OMG! I used to... back in the day BEFORE all the music responsibility!!! WOW! Connecting the dots! Time for reflection!!! Thank you, Bro!
Great job Bro" !!! Very informative and helpful. You would had laughed at me , 'cause I play, "I love you lord" now , the same way you use to !!! LOL !!! I'm going to stay at it !!!
Love this. Thanks for sharing your truth about your humble beginnings. That's the stuff which frees other musicians and also challenges them to improve. Because you didn't stay there. God's favour multiplied to you brother. (1:28-1:35 though)....😅😂
dude this is truly some master-level stuff, it's amazing how much we can learn from the spirit and music, a lot of what you're saying are things that pop-up in my playing all the time
