It's stayed with me since I read it in senior year of school nearly twenty years ago . . . we fight for more than Love or Beauty. There is Truth. Truth counts. Truth does count.
This is, if not the best scene in the film/book, one of the best. IMO, Julian Sands gave the best performance in the film. He acted this scene better than I had actually imagined.:)
dimi2680+ I like Sands' performance, but Noooooooooooooooooooo one Evvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvver tops Daniel Day-Lewis. His acting is untouchable.
@@3TNT3 Feel like I saw him 'Unforgettable Lightness of Being' (where he is as sexy as Sands is in this movie) and someone had to tell me it was the same actor here... Unbelieveable!
Great performances in a most heartwarming gentle personal movie! How lucky we are for having Utube and gracious people who upload such gems like this movie!
I’m surprised by the lack of Dream Theater comments in this thread. That being said, it’s so weird hearing the dialogue from 0:52 to 1:26 without Space Dye Vest
Dream Theater - Space Dyed Vest brought me to this. Interesting to see it all these years later, after hearing it so many times.... it doesn't pack as much as a wallop as it does with the amazing music of Dream Theater behind it.
I watched this not long after it was released and I couldn't help feeling conflicted about poor Cecile. I mean I don't think he was a bad person (I realise it is acting). Daniel Day-Lewis has got to be one of the most brilliant actors I have ever seen on screen and he was the right fit to play Cecile. I could not stop laughing at his scene in this movie because I too have defended myself from insects in this comical way and did not give a damn who saw me doing it either and he acted so naturally so I can empathize.
Beautiful scene.. so full of emotions.. If you liked Mr. Sand's performance in this movie, you should definitely see him in Dario Argento's "Phantom of the Opera". ABSOLUTELY must-see film ;-D
+tuğçe atmaca Yes. I've been looking for this scene for about... five minutes. It's not the same without Kevin's musical genius in conjunction with the scene, though.
Yeah I was reading the book and unexpectedly came across the quote, then I had to rent the movie...is it weird that I like it better in the Space Dye Vest context? Definitely the best quote in the song, too.
I think some people like to say a very fine performance is terrible because a very nasty and actually uneducated reviewer from England sounded very clever condemning Julian Sands who is really a very skilled and unique actor. I think they believe it makes them sound smart. was very young. Julian Sands is always interesting to watch and a very good actor in this film and all the others. He does not always play a likable character but he always plays his characters with skill and commitment.
How many women have made the mistake of marrying some version of a "Cecile Vyse", when they could have married a "George Emerson"? It seems to me, quite a few. Do you think they regret it? Of course this is an opinion, but I say this is The Best movie of All-Time. It is about the essence and meaning of Life: Love---in the most elegant and beautiful way. LOVE is what matters...That is Why we are here. ? --- Answer: LOVE
@edelinet I think he was good. He is absent minded because of his existential angst. Maybe someone who hasnt read the novel and is not very bright cannot understand it but I think it is clear. Anyway, both the book and the novel are excellent
@@notdoomed3782 I'm a bit late to answer, but Dream Theater's "Space-Dye Vest" uses some samples from this scene. For example, 0:49 is the lyrics between two verses of the song :)
@stardappledgreen Of course I am joking. But you must admit that his appearance as the Phantom was unforgettable. "(... )your female smell. It flows through my veins like the melody of the rolling ocean". *snicker* How could you ever resist him? ;-)
I don't understand why people find George Emerson so swoonworthy. He was so entirely consumed by his obsessive passions that he pretty much forced himself on her, without stopping to consider her feelings AT ALL. He also forced his ideas on Cecil on her. All I can see is an addiction -prone, delirious person who had a sexual infatuation with her and kept trying to put words in her head to manipulate her into getting with him. I'm guessing that is also what Foster saw in him when he chose to write this disappointing/ realistic love story...
I am a bit dissappointed by their decision of casting Julian as George-he doesn't seem to understand George's character. In this scene he seemed mad because of Lucy's direct refusal of his feelings for her. He was trying to convince her without understanding/disregarding her feelings. In the books George wasn't mad in this moment, he was presenting these facts calmly to Lucy, he was upset but he understood Lucy couldn't understand or believe what he was telling her at that moment.
I don't feel like he is mad at her. He wants her to be free and see what's in front of her. There is passion in his play, and that brings truthfulness to his words, I don't think it is madness, but truthfulness. Anyway, different perception. For my part, it's a really appropriate reaction for that scene in a movie
@vaileen93 While the Dario Argento Phantom is one of the worst movies ever, it's a must see because it's so rideciouls! (YOUR FEMALE SMELL!) And god knows its hard to watch Julian Sands in this movie when i've seen him stuff rats down his pants! XD
Mark Kermode is a well-known film reviewer with an oft repeated dislike of Julian Sands. As for why its awful... he just sounds bizarre and creepy, more than a little like Jez from Peep Show.
Julian Sands always stuck out like a sore thumb in this. He’s so hopelessly out of his league amidst this phenomenal cast. One of the great inexplicable casting decisions in cinema history.
Helena was freaking PRECIOUS in this.
How did you knew that
Lol!! I love Cecil at 1:25 outside the window doing battle with a bee!! So manly!!
One of my favorite scenes in film history ever. Absolutely glorious.
oh...his voice.... I melt.
Oh, tell me about it. I am in love with George Emmerson and he doesn't even exist.. 😭
It's stayed with me since I read it in senior year of school nearly twenty years ago . . . we fight for more than Love or Beauty. There is Truth. Truth counts. Truth does count.
My how true that is in these times we now live in ....Are you still around 12 years on Robert?
Oh Cecil. Poor, deluded, oblivious, awkward, funny little Cecil. Meanwhile perfect George is being turned down??
RIP Julian Sands (1958-2023)
This is, if not the best scene in the film/book, one of the best.

same here
You know you're a Dream Theater fan when you rent this movie and wait for him to SAY IT!!!
Maybe, the best scene in a film, ever.
absolutely flawless the great Sands

thank you George, love you George
Thoughts and ideas and feelings even when I hold you in my arms. Yes, that’s perfect.
shes absolutly adorable!
this is in a Dream Theater song called 'Space Dye Vest', crazy to hear that song for YEARS and just finally see the visual associated with the clip
Best scene in the best movie of all time...
11 years on still the Best movie of all time or has something surpassed it ?
Love Helena :).
And on some moments it sounds like her voice didn't changed a bit in all those years. Haha, funny :).
Space Dye Vest brought me here...
Beni de. O parça yalnızca erkekleri etkiler zannederdim.

@dimi2680 totally agree with you. the words he says and how he pulls it off is perfect.
one of my favorite films and novels for sure.

incredibly beautiful Helena in this movie
1:26 hahahhahaha, oh man i Love Daniel Day Lewis :D

Totally agree
Helena is such an angel
Helena looks so precious omg she was and still is sooo cute❤️
Lucy is doesn't know who she is yet. So funny, thought I had all the answers too, when l was her age.
Sigh, such a good film, going to have to buy it or rent it...Thanks for uploading that bit
DDL is in this 3 seconds and manages to steal the scene ;)
It's not "luck" that briings people together; it's God.
Poor Charlotte

3TNT3 I wish I could find a George Emerson...
If a guy said what he said to her I would be let's get married.
All I can say i 'damn, Maggie Smith is so pretty!"
I wish I had an ivory box to look at.
oh, how Miss Bartlett would love to be in the position of Lucy......

Hard to believe shed wind up doing something off the chain like Fight Club!
She dropped the Kiera Knightley period drama princess act as fast as she could and she had to do a real game changer to do it lmao.
One of the best sensual scene of the movie!
1:30 - 2:00
1:26 lol! DDL is great in this movie
Dream Theater Space Dye Vest
awesome scene :) thanks
He's so lusty!!
Mark Kermode is a movie reviewer who famously hates Julian Sands.
Me encanta su voz 😍
hey this was added on my birthday!
is this taken from the new dvd?
julian is so genuine in this scene.
Trully beautiful. 5/5
I WAS THE ONE THAT MARRIED THE CECIL TYPE AND NOT THE ONE THAT TRULY LOVED ME. WHEN I DIVORCED HIM IT WAS TOO LATE.
Dream Theater sent me.
How so?

Daniel Day-Lewis: Best. Actor. Ever. Or the GOAT, if you will.
Imagine if Emerson had been played by Patrick Stewart?
Dream Theater
If you have the entire movie could you please post it. I can only find a part or two on here. I would really love to see the entire movie.
Bellissimo commento

She SOUNDS older than she LOOKS. And she looks like she's my age. Which is eighteen.

@fromchomleystreet: He's not suave and polished- but surely that's the whole idea of who George is meant to be- the antithesis of precious Cecil.
Julian is perfect as George Emerson. The role he was born to play, in my opinion!
Goodness, what an awful performance.
holy god it IS a terrible performance.
