Wasn't expecting this on a video that's 1+ year old.

4:29 oh we learned about this in my caricature illustration class at college! Basically the video provides a demonstration on how our brains recognize human faces: comparing them to each other and really highlighting what makes faces different, and emphasizing the differences only. Staring at the cross and not directly at the faces let’s your brain erase all other information about the faces except what makes them most unique from each other
Interesting! Thanks for the info :O

@@static_555 Some (but not all) of them look distorted, BUT you can pause each pair and look at the cross then look at the pictures and there is a clear difference. Notice how the eyes are in the exact same location every time for both images. I think that's a key thing for this to work well too.

The brain when focusing on objects makes your brain have non essential features of things fade into the background to allow for more "processing" ability. So when you stare at the cross, alot of the non-essential features fade away. Then your brain gets confused and tries to fill in the missing blanks and since you see 2 faces it tries to morph them together. Ends up looking funny.
This. Plus some of those pics were just also kinda weird shots where the celebs' faces weren't in usual positions. But mostly what you said ofc

For several years I’ve encouraged my daughter to explain her symptoms to the doctor herself and only contributed when she’s forgotten information or is underplaying the symptoms as described to me. I also encourage her to keep a symptom diary when something is bothering her to take to the doctor because it can provide answers to questions the doctors are going to ask anyway without you relying on your recall (when did the symptoms start, how often do you experience these symptoms, what are you doing when you experienced these symptoms, etc.
Hijacking this comment to say that , as someone with autism, I do exactly what Doctor Mike was explaining. And my mom has suggested the same thing you did, a symptom diary. I did keep a symptom diary though and it can only help so much. When you get diagnosed with IBS and every diary entry is “my stomach hurts” and a time entry it doesn’t mean much

@cqvio doli i think theyre talking about the dude with no collarbone
@Be...There is a actual condition named Cleidocranial dystosis wherein patient congenitally lacks collarbone
Optician here! The thing with the faces appearing distorted has to do with the way our brain merges the different images it receives from the retinas. Stereopsis (the ability to perceive depth with eyesight) happens by having two corresponding spots on the retina take see a the same object on the plane of the place where your eyes are fixed on. By trying to fuse those spots our and calculating the difference between the two images from the retinas our brain is able to perceive depth. Due to the pictures of the the celebrities being similar in colour but not matching in actual composition our brain tries to merge them to make sense out of them, thus distorting the faces to in an attempt to make a single picture of of them. That's also why both faces are distorted.
thanks, i knew it had to be something with merging
Some of the faces were also already strange looking lol
Just a little extra info. Objects in our peripheral visual fields are more susceptible to top-down processing, since the visual attention streams only to a certain degree retains information from everything outside the central visual field. Therefore, to make sense of it, higher cognitive functions need to interpret whatever information is left
The faces looks a little altered for the beginning.
thanks for the info man

I relate to that last part you said, Dr. Mike. How many students during and before exams starts actually goes to the bathroom? The amount of times I had to hold on to a pee during an e, and was it worth it. YES! but my bladder would hate for it.
I sometimes forget to go the bathroom before the exams, because I’m preoccupied reviewing what I studied for the past week or two, then I don’t go to the bath room during an exam, it’s too distracting for me and the people around me, so I end up holding it in.
I love that you will admit when you don’t really know why something happens to the body and you’re so fascinated by it! Sign of a great healthcare worker, doctor or any other.

Lmfaoo, ikr I thought he was concerned from a hygiene standpoint of a view.
Hey Dr. Mike, optometry student here. Regarding the optical illusion with the faces, I think this has to do with visual attention. While we fixate on something we are putting our fovea on the target to get the best vision. The information we get peripherally in the retina is not as sharp and our brain ignores small details within the peripheral vision. Our peripheral retina is more stimulated by motion than detail. This is why while we are fixating on something the world around us, other than the fixated object, is blurred.
Why does it change back after only one alien thing
Yeah and I think our brain is trying to deal with the incomplete information we get peripherally and makes up these Alien faces. It’s surprising how much of what we see is dependent on how our brain wants to interpret it, especially very fast or peripheral things your brain really fills in the blanks, some situations I’ve been in I really genuinely thought I was seeing something that I later found out was something totally different. I think also the fact that our brains are so specialized specifically in recognizing and interpreting faces and facial expressions, maybe the brain starts to sort of exaggerate or highlight important features? for me at least the eyes and the mouth got really large on most of the faces.
Also Idk if you’re familiar with it but I wonder if this has anything to do with the phenomenon of when you’re in really low lighting and you stare straight at a friends face for long enough it also starts to distort in weird ways. Or if you stare at yourself in the mirror in really low lighting. I heard it explained once in a science show but I can’t remeber what they said the cause/hypothesis of the cause is.
while that is true, in this case half of the faces are edited to warp the features
The faces aren't warped because if you focus on them they are normal. I think this has to do with right and left brain talking information and melding them, so each one is a combo of the two you are seeing peripherally. If you start focusing on either face it stops because you have shifted focus and your brain doesn't need to combine them to make sense.

You are not a chicken in a pot
Excellent video yet again. The celebrity face mash up is a visual perceptual trick as the two sides of the brain are trying to process the visual information, but since you are in convergence focused on the plus, your peripheral vision only takes in so much information and your brain extrapolates what it things should go there. The two faces also play a part in this (as you are almost tricking the brain into seeing just one face twice). I'm an OT with fair amount of visual perceptual and visual motor experience. This has some similarity to those 3d posters we used to stare at as a child.

The frequency 17.5kHz is actually within the range or normal human hearing. (20Hz - 20kHz) if you can hear it, that means that the hairs in your ear that is responsible for helping you hear that frequency, hasn’t died off yet. The face distortions happen because as you center your fovea on the point, your peripheral vision (lower resolution, motion sensitive) is emphasized. As your foveal information and peripheral information usually coordinate the, isolation of just the peripheral vision reads as distorted. This is one of the reasons our faces are asymmetrical. We tend to bias toward looking at the right eye for expression information. Each saccade will also read the exaggerated, but less clear, peripheral features to understand coordinated meaning. The asymmetry (which tends to “pool” out from the right eye) is easier to interpret. The peripheral information, exaggerated and motion sensitive, reading information that falls off on an arc (the information value decays by distance from the foveal fixation), is contributive to understanding meaning. Isolated is looks freaky, but is also the basis for how we can still understand likeness and sense in cartoon faces.

About when you get patients that are old enough to speak for themselves, just because they are old enough doesn’t mean they can many things can stop them like anxiety or autism or they might be mute, for me I’m autistic and very anxious at doctors or anyone who is apart of authority so I physically cannot speak I mean even if I wanted to I cannot speak it physically hurts not even to my mum in those situations it’s easier if my mum speaks for me or maybe they give me pen and paper, so please don’t think these kinds of patients are rude we really aren’t we just need extra support ❤

The one about the guy’s collarbones is actually real! There’s a rare condition called cleidocranial dysplasia which effects your bones/teeth, potentially causing them to form differently or in some cases certain bones can be completely absent, like his collarbone! Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin in Stranger Things is probably the most well known example of someone with this condition and he’s been very open about what it’s like so definitely check out some interviews with him if you’re interested! 💛

4:41 Not a neuroscientist here but just an ap psych student with a really good teacher- this is because your brain HATES gaps ( this also happens @ night with turning your coat into a man standing there ) because the audio is telling you that the faces are going to distort, your brain fills in that gap, and distorts the faces.
My best explanation for what is happening at 4:25 ish. The mind naturally attempts to make sense of what we see, as we all know. Staring at a single point while faces change on either side, our mind is trying to process them as constants but faces are weird and very rarely symmetrical. The constant change of feature sizes from one face to another are creating a ripple like effect changing positions of eyes, forehead, nose, and mouth in an attempt to create a standard face. While we can't freeze our own representation of what is happening I believe it would be similar to taking a panorama shot with motion in it, like someone walking across the frame.
The pictures are just photoshopped or something, like just look at one side. They don't look like weird faces they just are weird faces...
I've never seen a dermitograph that extreme. But many can actually draw on ourselves like what she did, growing up I would give myself scale patterns on my arms when I got bored in church.
Mine used to be severe like in this video. But I have it controlled now. The worst part for me is still the itching. Ugh.
@@meaganfalasca6107 ugh i know right! and it only makes it worse because the more you scratch more it flairs! one guy slapped me on the back and it itched for a solid hour after
I don't think I have a specific condition, I think just sensitive skin... or maybe that is in itself a condition, but if I apply a good amount of pressure (nothing crazy, but it definitely happens when I lean on something) I can indeed draw on my skin.
Although her dermitograph may be extreme I don’t believe her is. I looked at the video multiple times and if you look carefully you can see the marks where already there before she even touched them
I used to freak people out with my dermatographia when i was a kid and then awkwardly explain that its not anything serious, just my really sensitive skin.
Oh my gosh…….Im not good at talking to people at all…..so every time I go to the doctor and I have something wrong with me I immediately look at my parents for them to say that…..I even ask my mom to order for me at restaurants………and I’m 13 years old……
