  • ESPN analyst Kirk Goldsberry explains how LeBron James changed his game to extend his reign on the throne into his late 30s. James' shot selection and assists powered the Los Angeles Lakers to their 17th trophy in the 2020 NBA Finals.
CORRECTION: LeBron James is the second-oldest Finals MVP. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was 38 in 1985.

Lebron has the highest basketball IQ. He only shifts into high gear when he has to, otherwise, he takes a rest (while on the court). His longevity is due to the fact that he's very selective about when he uses his power. He understands that shooting the 3 and dropping dimes takes less physical energy, so he's learned to master the parts of his game that takes less energy to execute. His mental game is now just as high as his physical. That's the master level.

The only thing he’s never changed is his ball dominance. He’s the reason I even love basketball, but LeBron is still an awkward fit with guys who can’t play off the ball (Lonzo, Rondo, D Rose stand out in recent years). He has been able to have mostly complementary talent around him, or rotate on/off the court with more awkward fits (Rondo), so it doesn’t matter much. But imagine in today’s smaller league, how unstoppable LeBron would be if he played the post and allowed a Rondo-type to orchestrate the offense. That’s probably his next evolution though.

Now he's the Nets assistant coach and look at KD... the dude has been playing crazy minutes both ends after an Achilles injury.

At 36, hopefully his experience and intelligence as a cerebral player will prolong his career for another 3-5 years effectively.

Very fortunate to live in the era to witness his greatness since his 1st championship in 2012 up to the latest in last year. Sure this man is evolving his game which show the sign of his near immortal greatness in basketball.
