I still think 2d particles paired with a 3d environment is one of the coolest stylistic choices ever. Also the way his hand singes when he touches it is just soo nice
From what I can tell: Solid camera work and loads of animation experience, but the most interesting effects here seem to be primarily done in 2D pixel art, which is then brought into 3D by putting them as partially transparent textures on a series of flat planes. So yeah, mostly just plain skills are what lead to this awesome result. Plus a good bit of creativity to come up with the cool details of this whole sequence, of course.
not only is the animation good, the direction is also fantastic! you can immediately get a feel for the mood, a general idea of the character's intents, and their personality! well done!
I know I have commented multiple times at this point, but I CAN'T get enough of this!! Absolutely incredible work, you should definitely post a few more "test" animations ;)

Did you use blockbench for the character and then rig and animate it in blender? Anyone have any ideas how the effect at 0:13 was done or was some of this in post editing software? Just wondering because this is an absolute work of art that inspired me to make something similar.

MY CRITIQUES: The spiral effects on him when he flies just dont really do him justice. I've been looking at other stuff you've made on this channel and the cube canvas channels, and I keep seeing this popup. Incorporating the 2d mc effects is a cool idea, but it doesn't always look as sick as it could. I would consider trying to make it 3d, or just add some more "spice" into it lol. And the 2d fire one is a great example of 2d in 3d done very well, but I will say it does kind of obstruct him from our view a little too much, or maybe just for a little too long. After looking his landing moment over and over, I think it may have looked better if the fire disintegrated a litttle bit faster, but I also love the accompanying sound effect for the flame. I was going to say its kind of unclear what happens when he touches the red thing, but after looking it over several times, it looks like there's a barrier stopping him from touching it. And also, after he touches it, i noticed there was some weird red trail smoke on his hand, i honestly have no idea what this is supposed to represent, and given the opportunity of what could've been there, its kind of lack luster, its transparent dark red that kinda hides in the background. I can guess that tries to show how the spell around the object is like preventing him from touching it, but there are just simply better ways at showing that. To make this more obvious for the viewer, you could maybe send the ripple a little farther out, or have it shake him to show that there's some magic seal on this object or something.That would also make it more clear why he's encasing it using his magic enchant glyphs lol. After he encases it, he does something where he kind of expands the floor, now this looks pretty sick, but once again I kindaaa felt like maybe a 3d effect would look better, either that or maybe you could once again add some "spice" (just some extra visual effects when the floor first opens, or maybe overlay some other 3d effects on top of this. The biggest missed opportunity I notice is when he raises his arms and the camera zooms way out to show the plane he is on, and some kind of galaxy effect is projected downwards and closes inward. The movement of this I can already tell would be sick, but for this specific effect, I think it would look WAyy cooler 3d, or with a ton of other 2d effects on it to sell it. Because as it stands right now its just like a gif with some cool scaling on it. Also I really love the scene where he's staring at his magic spiral and it cuts back and forth between him and the magic with a demonic noise playing (enderman). This reminds me a lot of Alastor from Hazbin Hotel, im not some geeked out fan of them or anything, but the general idea of a character having dark untold power and kind of projecting themselves as this social (in this case just cool and jazzy) guy, but then when they do use this power you can see the darkness consume them; is just a really cool thing to watch happen. Which is why I feel like there could've been some type of effect or something given to him in this moment, to show his true self. As he's observing and marveling at his dark power take place before him, these short moments should show this other side of him projected onto his face. Overall it would just make the scene even better than it already is. This kind of goes for the ending scene too, where its sort of dolly zoomed in on his face with a disturbing noise overlaying the music. OVERALL: I don't use blender, I don't animate (I do love the art of video production), but I have no skill in this animation stuff. But that does not mean I don't have eyes that see, that I dont have a brain that can think and process what I'm watching, I hate seeing people try to invalidate others opinions because they aren't a master at video making or animation, you dont have to be.
