    Understanding how you work as an artist is a huge hurdle to get over. There are always people(profs, spectators, peers) who will have opinions on how you make art, and while trying new systems is always fun, doing what works for you will be best for your art.

    You talk about how you're self conscious about taking so much time to plan a piece, meanwhile im over here so impressed you are that dedicated bc i do not have tha patience to work on one idea for more than 1 version of it (and lets be honest half the time I don't even have the patience to entirely finish the 1st version!).

      I feel you!! If I take too long with planning sometimes I end up getting bored and abandoning the idea :/

    I usually just jump into a painting when I have a loose idea. But lately I’ve been trying to plan more

    When I make a painting I usuallly have an idea of what I want to include and I make story board on google slides, that might include color schemes and or objects in the paint, and if it a huge canvas then I do lil thumbnails for composition.

    I'm in love with how this turned out, and the little specks of pink that show through the final look just give me so joy 😍 I'm terrible when it comes to planning out big projects or paintings. If i spend too long on planning it I get bored and just give up, so I usually just dive in and have a 50/50 chance of loving or hating it 😂 sometimes winging it is perfect for me, sometimes it puts me in a huge art block. There's no winning 🤣 just gotta hedge my bets 👌

      so cool to hear more about your process static! I struggle too with getting bored with a project, I just find ways to motivate myself to continue it and hope that it works 🥲💀

    i always plan out my large paintings too. at the very least i like to sketch the composition in a thumbnail so i dont spend forever sketching it out on the canvas. i prefer it a lot more to spontaneously painting tbh because if it’s not going the way IK envision it just gets frustrating
    i rlly like seeing ur process because i feel like it’s so similar to my own!! cool to see that im not the only one who puts so much planning into paintings

    • @sketchesofshay
      @sketchesofshay  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is so comforting to hear!! I completely agree with you. I love spontaneously painting in my sketchbook, but when it’s a bigger project I want to make sure I get it how i want it to look!

    I'm doing a draw for 30 days challenge and today's drawing was a tree, so this fit perfectly with the theme I was drawing. What a coincidence

    First of all would love to see streams from you i would love to see a longer format. And for big pieces I tend to do a thumbnail and a color pass ,inimitable and have a folder of references that I know I’m going to use, I don’t tend to do specific studies because my brain finds it tedious and prefers to figure out some things while working, but everyone’s path is different and I can’t wait to see how your painting turn out

    I usually just go in when I’m painting something but recently I’ve been trying to plan things out and I like doing that more. It gives me time to think about what I actually like and want in it. I can remove and change some stuff. Love your art and I’d love a live stream

    I’d love to see livestreams of you drawing :D i usually just jump into a painting but i wish I had more patience and was able to plan out my pieces because I know they would turn out so much better, my impatience is the reason I can’t paint that much lmao, love your videos keep it up :D

    Love it!
    Here’s a video suggestion that would be Interesting to see, but basically a draw with me whilst you talk about your process when it comes to working on a oc, design wise and story wise, I’ve been dying to find videos on peoples process because I’m a bit stuck on how to proceed with my character development but all I can find is what not to do. Obviously this isn’t something you have to do hence the suggestion part, again love ur videos

    Your work brings me so much comfort and assurance in my drawing process, thank you for that. For the neon/fluorescent pink you use at the start, how do you decide when to use what color for an underpainting?

    • @sketchesofshay
      @sketchesofshay  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It usually depends on the overall mood/color palette I want to go for! For this specifically, I knew I was doing a sunset painting, so the colors were going to be really warm, and I thought magenta would be pair really well as an underpainting! Also, you can experiment with it, like using a green underpainting for a mostly red painting, and seeing how those complementary colors interact and create tension through color. I feel like I'm rambling lol I'd recommend Alai Ganuza, James Gurney, and Mary Sanche here on TH-cam and their underpainting videos for more info!

    Happy to see another post!! I go to an art studio so my mentor helps me study! While building my portfolio, I've studied nose structures and poc hair! I still need to do more culture studies though... and no I definitely need to plan lol
    And omg!! I would love to watch streaming!! if you were to do that could you post a schedule for it?

    This is beautiful, also are you using gouache to paint this? Also I heavily relate to the stress about perfectionism and stuff about painting, except for me I’ve never painted before and it’s about *how* to start

      @sketchesofshay  ปีที่แล้ว +2

    @gamutgirl ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'd love to see you livestream and/or other long-format videos! I enjoy making art while you're making art. ;)
    Also, don't fret about your process. Lean into what gets you to create. And if that means a lot of planning, especially for a big piece, embrace it and do what gets you the results you want. As you said, once you create more things, your planning will become more efficient and your process will evolve. It's part of being an artist, even though "time saved" is a huge part of business and unfortunately fights directly with the often necessary slow artistic process... but know that we love watching your process no matter how long or involved, so that lends itself to more content for the business side of social media things, yeah? 🤷‍♀ Either way, I'm here for your journey which is unique to you~
    As time goes on, you'll find there is less and less time to do the things that fill your cup. It too easily gets replaced by "adulting" and all the admin tasks it requires to keep a livelihood running. It is frustrating. Fight to protect this time. You won't always be able to, but if you keep it at the top of your priorities, it'll happen more often than not. I took a decade-long absence from art because life got in the way and I didn't prioritize the thing that made me happy when I really should have (because art takes more energy than I thought I had, but I didn't understand that the joy it brings helps you walk a million more miles). I'm slowly getting back into it now and attempting to reconnect with the art community, and that's how I found you and your lovely folks here! By the way, you don't lose your artistic ability if you don't make art every day, or even years. It comes right back. 😉 You're always an artist.
