  • Follow along as we make a 5-color reduction woodcut print.
There are a lot of ways to make prints, but this is the way I go about it, and I hope you enjoy it!
This video goes step by step through the full process of making a reduction woodcut print. I printed this block using Speedball Pro - Water based relief ink, and Arnhem paper. If you're interested in purchasing one of these, or any of my other prints, check out the shop! www.diodepress.com/shop
As always, let me know if you have any questions in the comments and I'll be happy to answer!

Wow! I used to do woodcarving and that looked like it took some time to do. Those turned out awesome. I’m a origami artist now and plan I’m using what I have learned on here to step up my art. Thank you for putting so much work into this channel.

Origami is awesome, and I'd imagine a huge opportunity to incorporate with print! The carving definitely took some time, but I did my best to edit out the hours of footage! Thanks for watching!

At the 7 (ish) minute mark - you use what looks like a straight blade to gauge the block. What knife is are you using and where can I get it? I am teaching myself woodcut from watching videos. My plan is to print t shirts. Learning is a bit of a challegne and process.

David Collett I don’t know the exact one he’s using but I found ones very similar by looking up tabletop etching press.

Thanks! I’m using a Richeson “Baby Press”, Dick Blick has a very similar model as well.

Nice work. What type of wood do you use for woodcuts?

    • @DiodePress

This was Baltic birch plywood, but I prefer Shina Ply most of the time (I get it from McClains printmaking). Thanks for checking out the video!

Your plywood is so much cleaner than mine is in-between each print run! What kind of spray-sealer did you use? Do you think that it affects the appearance of the woodgrain or color on the print?

I think I used a clear acrylic spray sealer for woodworking on this one. After it dries, I gave it a light sanding with 400grit to smooth it out. It does get rid of almost all wood-grain, which I'm ok with, but the colors were not effected.

Diode Press - I bought a quart (life time supply) of shellac based on another recommendation. It works really well and dries super fast. Also needs a a light 400 grit before inking up.
