I don't really watch music videos considering we're in the age of Spotify but I'm a big Skrillex fan and found this one. Such an incredible visual compliment to the best song from the new album IMO. Can someone closer to this culture try to interpret the meaning? Great job to everyone involved! It must take so much work and planning to get this done...
What i can interpreted from what i saw here and read on the director's IG. The plot tells that little girl was a refugee or somewhat a victim of war, she grew up, embraced her past and started a revolution, to be more of herself. It's somewhat all about revolution from the pov of arab/turkish (?) women, who could be a victim of oppression/violence/war,
I love every juxtaposition that the director wanted to show in this MV, picking Turkey and its contrasts as its main subject for this song is really suitable, for a crazy song like this, the director delivered a quick yet powerful storytelling.
An amazing culturally-rich experience to complement an amazing track. The settings, the emotions, the dances, the visuals and the amount of work put into this - huge respect. Personally I imagined this track in an animated look with the charaters and setting from the cover arts, but this might fit the song just as good, if not better. Well done! 🖤
and on a personal level this is very refreshing to see in electronic music. I feel like what happens so often is a white washing when sampling sounds from other cultures, basically colonizing their sound and leaving those people marginalized and taking all the spotlight. A recent one that comes to mind that really bothers me is "behind the sun" by ODESZA. I don't know what went on behind the scenes of XENA but it feels like a breath of fresh air to me in mainstream electronic music and I am grateful that this incredibly impactful song and video exist.
