I'm no pro but I'm a certified instructor. I used to struggle with this in my 20's. The simple fix for a weekend hacker? Focus on keeping your elbow straight, and don't 'kill it.' This isn't baseball. Mechanics will send the ball farther than your muscles in this game. Control. Don't rush your back swing, just let it flow. Good luck!
If people made a concerted effort to hit the ball at 50% of their power they would be amazed at how much further the ball travels when it is struck properly. It's much easier to strike the ball properly when we slow the tempo down, in fact it's the best way to learn how to fade and draw the ball at will and once we've learned all of those things at 50% speed, the trick is to go to 55% speed and if you get really good maybe 60% (at which point you'll just be killing it and controlling it).
This advice actually gives the amateur a slice! The club outside the hands going back is a great first move for 90% of golfers. It facilitates an inside out swing path and give you the ability to hit the ball a long way with slow to medium swing speeds.
Cheers for this, I have been researching "basic golf tips" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Graysonyon Putter Prolific - (just google it ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my co-worker got great success with it.
Excellent! I learned that my shoulders were leading my swing in error thus leading to an outside in swing path (slice) just as they say. Never heard this until now! THANKS !
always struggle with slice and this video has really helped me with the takeaway and where the club should be at the top of my swing and has helped my game so much this year and I'm more consistent
I too played baseball through HS varsity. Only golfed a few times a year during those 18 years. Now that I'm in my late 30s and focusing on my golf game, it has been a challenge to "un-baseball" my golf swing. I just have to remind myself "slow down"! Control creates accuracy which then creates distance. Don't swing for the fences and "hope" to connect. Slow down until you start connecting consistently, the power will eventually follow.
Look for Mike Malaska. His concept is very similar to Tiger/Harmon early 2000's and he fixes swings of baseball pro's in his videos. Malaska played baseball and is one of the best golf instructors in the world.
Butch hasn't solved his two way miss problem! Rickie is one of my favourite players, don't let the friendship get in the way of business. It is costing u major titles! Rickie's is a complex swing that few can pull off. Great win at the WM, heart of a lion! I was 62 at the start of the last round, 72 by the end! Go get'em!
I fixed mine by narrowing my stance to a fraction wider than shoulder width. I now hit long and straight. The other day I was 10 yards short of the green on a short par 4 and I've been playing for 6 months at age 50.
One thing you see with every great player is fully extend right arm just after impact. Doing so guarantees the club head is rotating and closing which greatly decreases the chance of a slice. If that right arm never fully extends, you just left the club face open and you know what happens next.....
Most of these youtube golf videos seem to spend 90% on what we might be doing wrong and 10% on what to do right. I'm worn out by the time they get to the part of what we should do.
I was just talking about this to my golf buddy. I can't stand the amount of time they take talking. Some videos are 15-20 minutes long talking about 1/5th of the backswing...show me what to do the right way and Ill hit up the range.
Couldn’t agree more - blab, blab, blab - i go practice the preaching and no improvement. Huge waste of time these instructions and my frustration level rises thus I give up and park the clubs for awhile till that subsides only to go try again and repeat. About to give it up entirely.
If you watch Koepka's slo mo swing, it looks like he takes the club back "outside his hands" which Harmon says is a no-no, yet Koepka has no issues hitting it. It also looks like Ricky hinges early to get to that parallel spot, I may have that wrong. Obviously these guys are pros who can figure out how to get to the right end position to hit the ball better than anyone. Just wondering about the discrepancy, do most take it back like RIcky?
I was hitting them good then stopped practicing and focused on short game and a slice started to appear on my driver. After reviewing video the cause is clearly the reason Butch hi highlights in the opening.
Weirdest tip to adjust for slice aim heavy heel. It works to get it straight but your driver is going 200 yards. Gotta aim inside out. Back arm needs to come over front arm on follow through. And of course square it up on the back swing instead of the swing itself that over correction causes wasted energy. My slice has dissipated but I’m weak hitting 230 at 6’1” 185 pounds. If I was any good I’d be hitting 270 carry. Long story short of you can’t keep 50 things in your head, your casual and want to be barely okay just aim heel side forget everything but head down keep legs steady arms stiff aim heel side and backswing and swing at the same speed without thinking about it too much you’ll still suck but ya might beat your buddies.
I thought I had a pretty good swing. Then I had a few lessons and learned that almost everything I was doing was wrong. I got worse at everything as I tried to relearn it all. It took years, but eventually I had a better swing with better results. Then I had back problems and couldn't play for years, but that's another story, I guess.
Played baseball all my life, I’ve started playing golf now in my 20s and I slice the crap out of the ball every single time. I am determined to fix this baseball swing curse!
I stopped baseball and swung a golf club hundreds of thousands of times, before trying to swing a baseball bat again. I can no longer hit a baseball right handed, only left. The golf swing completely ruined my bat swing lmao
So it's not club face down? I've been watching how to not slice videos for days and others are saying the club face should point towards the ground on the back swing. This shows it as perpendicular to the ground? Which is right?
He practices 40 hours a week to keep that in check. We don’t, and would need tons of practice to get it down. It absolutely does matter, it doesn’t mean it can’t be done though.
"The high handicapper" is an over generalization of what the problems truly are. I hate when 'pros' talk like they've never been crappy at golf. Everyone has been crappy at golf, just not everyone stays crappy.
Whenever someone says golfers who slice are often coming over the top too much it never makes sense to me. I was slicing all the middle holes of my round yesterday. On the 12th hole I figured I was leaving the club face open so I came over the top and hit the straightest drive in my last 5 rounds 🤷♂️ It was only 252 so I definitely didn't swing as hard as usual but still I don't get it. Tough sport.
K Vall drop your hands down first to the ball before swinging snd rotating your shoulders over the top. take the club up, and then drop your hands straight down
If I can remember correctly didnt Butch have Tiger having the head toward the inside of his backswing? I know every player needs different techniques but still lol
Many pros have a slightly open clubface at setup (like Jason Day). I do too. It’s an anti hook setup, but you can still hit a slight draw with it. It’s just a little insurance to make sure it doesn’t go left for those of us who play a draw. It can also be used to play a slight fade. Lots of reasons.
Is it true that a masters official told fowler to turn his hat around and fowler said no thats the way i wear it and the official said not around here , turn it around or leave?
This year i found the cure to my slice. Rotate fully to the lead side, keep easy tempo and no cupped wrist. Also find right tee hight. Now i hit my drives dead straight 240 meters average splitting fairways.
if u are making adjustments with the driver mid swing. shit gonna go south. practice the swing plane then just match the club head and boom. straight as u like.
What are you talking about lol he clearly pointed out a lot of important tips. Good form. Chin up. Tempo of swing. The way to raise your driver on the back swing. Lots of good information.
Dreama40 Hey Dream. Yes Butch kinda mis spoke, but not intentionally i don't t think. Rickie still keep the club outside his hands on the good takeaway just not a much on his old swing. The emphasis was that the old golf swing was to much outside his hands. Hope that helps. Terry
Someone with all his years of teaching experience should be careful what they say because beginners can become VERY confused. By the way Leadbetter is now teaching a method (The A Swing) whereby he encourages the positions Ricky used to achieve. Go to 100 teachers they will all tell you something different lol, no chance....
+Dreama40 I've never heard a teacher talk about putting the club inside the hands on the backswing. That would automatically point the club away from the ball and off of plane.
Its not as dramatic as that Mathew. I hear what your saying. Off the ball the hands are inside the club head, but on a natural one piece take away. Have you seen any of my videos yet?
the reason is that most golfers take the club back on a path with the head inside the hands so teachers will over correct that mistake by having people take the club back on a path outside the hands. an on path takeaway would be one where the clubhead covers your hands on the 1/4 part of the swing (the takeaway) and the1/2 part of the swing (the downswing)
@@gamalsankara1388 .. because I have eyes.. and his old swing with his flat left arm, that sits a little below his right shoulder in the backswing has returned..

slewofdamascus intresting
I need to get rid of my baseball swing. I’m a pitcher only now so I can focus on my golf swing
You're correct, this is the Best advice!!! We tend to swing too hard to get the distance. Relax and swing through.
This advice actually gives the amateur a slice! The club outside the hands going back is a great first move for 90% of golfers. It facilitates an inside out swing path and give you the ability to hit the ball a long way with slow to medium swing speeds.
