    The 1996 movie Tin Cup is based on a true story about Gary McCord, a professional golfer and commentator on the Champions Tour. In the 1986 FedEx St. Jude Classic, McCord dropped five balls in a row in the water on the par-5 16th hole, refusing to change clubs or go to the drop area. This moment inspired the memorable sports scene in the movie. For example, in the movie, Roy McAvoy's final-round score in the fictional U.S. Open is 78, after posting scores of 83-62-64-78. However, this scene actually happened to McCord in the 1986 tournament, when he hit five in the water and carded a 16 on the hole to cap a round of 87. Mcord was the announcer that took the bet for the bank shot off the crapper and was in the bar scene.

      Just that one scene where Roy tries to make the green on the long shot is based on McCord, not the entire movie. The movie is inspired by stories of many golfers, professional and amateurs that have been told around clubhouses.

    Even though David is a huge tool, I love the part where he wins the bet by hitting the ball across the pavement. It's just so clever and yet so simple...it shows you that you have to always try to think outside the box to have the best shot in life, and also it's a great illustration of the phrase, "Work smarter, not harder" which is Tin Cup's biggest problem.

    • @clh35
      @clh35 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      This was "borrowed" from a legendary story from the 1920's involving golfer Titanic Thompson and Arnold "The Brain" Rothstein of Chicago Black Sox infamy. Rothstein anticipated him perhaps hitting the ball off a cliff, so he stipulated a flat surface... Thompson gladly hit it across a frozen Lake Erie. This story was recounted in a book I had as a child in the 80's and I instantly recognized the homage, though I imagine this hustle has been reused by many through the years.

    A bit of trivia - Costner had never played golf before this movie, but became so good training for the movie that a lot of the shots they filmed getting close or making putts were his actual shots - they didn't need to use special effects.

    Sports movie endings are tough because either the people you've fallen in love with win the final game/event/competition which makes it conventional and predictable, or they have to lose which is unsatisfying. This movie finds the perfect balance between the two

      Ron Shelton's movies are always interesting because they're not so much "sports movies" as they are character studies set in the sports world. So they're more unpredictable and more about the people involved, what drives them and how they grow and develop, rather than winning and losing. So a character can win the game but still feel like they failed, or lose the game but feel like they succeeded. Blue Chips is another good Ron Shelton movie, I hope Cassie reacts to that one, too.

      The worst argument I ever got into with one of my bosses was over the end of this movie. She is a big golf fan and thought there was no way he would blow that last hole that way. I thought it was the perfect culmination of his character. He told Rene at the beginning that he'd never finished anything in his life. He wanted to change that. "It's about gaining control of your life and letting go at the same time." That's what he did. He finished with a perfectly controlled shot while letting go of winning.

    This movie and the end scene has a simple message. Most the time as adults, we lay up. We play it safe. We sacrifice our dreams to work to try and make a steady living with little to moderate fulfillment. Roy "going for it" is the cliché of going for you dreams. Like say, starting a TH-cam channel, reacting to movies. Sounds crazy but if you guys weren't doing this, you'd be known and loved by your close friends, families and acquaintances. Instead, you have 383k fans who love to watch you react to movies they love. And I would say that is something special 🙂

During the final hole of the tournament, when he sinks that shot, its for a 12. Nice symbolism.

It is where the term "hitting it on the screws" came from, since there are between 2 and 4 screws on the face, in the "sweet spot" on those old persimmon clubs. Once every couple of years, I will take my dad's old set of beryllium copper Ping Eye 2s to hit at the range, just for fun. I don't do it often because those clubs still look almost brand new.

    Ron Shelton writes a helluva sports movie, and Costner has just the right acting and athletic chops to bring it home. This doesn't work if he doesn't look like a golfer when he swings the club. Same with Bull Durham, he's clearly a natural athlete.
    What makes this work even better is the soundtrack. What an incredible movie soundtrack, from Keb' Mo' and Jimmie Vaughan and Bruce Hornsby to Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin and Amanda Marshall.

    Y’all should check out Mr. Brooks, Criminal, and 3000 Miles to Graceland to catch Costner in some villainous roles. And for Rene Russo check out Get Shorty. It’s based off an Elmore Leonard book and there are several great movies (ie Jackie Brown and Out of Sight) and an incredible TV show (Justified) that are adaptations of his work.

    "The doctor is his mother" riddle is often cited as proof of sexism, but it's actually word suggestion. There's another example, fitting of this movie's title. You tell someone to say "ten" quickly, 10 times. They start saying ten and usually count with their fingers. You can interrupt them "faster" so they count faster. Then you very quickly ask "What's an aluminum can made of?" and more often than not they reply "tin". Are they sexist against aluminum too?
    The riddle says "he" "boy" "father" "him" over and over repeatedly through the entire riddle. The male gender (and there being only 2 characters) is stuck on the mind. It's word suggestion, not sexism.
