I have had many dogs. I have always fed them once a day. My chihuahua lived to be 16 yrs old. I never had any issues with her at all. I now have a husky who is going to be 9 and a pomeranian who will be 8. They both eat once a day. Not kibble. Fresh food. And they get a probiotic daily. I feed them according to whats going on in my day. I try not to feed them later than 7 pm. Sometimes my days are busy and I cant feed them earlier but they don't seem to mind eating whenever. Except for breakfast. They don't seem to want anything before noon.

Feeding your pet fresh food like you mentioned is more of a factor than feeding them once or twice a day. Also genetics is big factor.

38 dogs in my lifetime, all but one lived past the age of 16, with the oldest being just shy of 19. All fed once a day.
Pups, up to 10 months of age, I’d feed more often because they burn up so much energy.

old post but I just adopted a dog who had to be re-homed...she was pretty overweight when I got her and she's lost a lot of weight lately. She's a pretty big dog and was wondering what time of day you fed your dogs? I usually feed her pretty early in the day but she seems hungry later in the day and feel bad. I do give her some treats after our walk at night but was wondering if I'm feed her too early (between 8-9 AM).

I just started feeding my two dogs (1.5 year olds) once a day in the morning. I was doing the time-restricted feedings twice a day, but I found the time constraints difficult on my day to day life. So, in order to maximize the benefits of ketosis/fasting and also adjust to my lifestyle, I've switched them to once a day. First benefit I witnessed was their overall increased appetite. One of my dogs would sometimes not finish his food in the morning. Second is that they were less picky eaters. They used to be skeptical of organ meats, but now they will finish their entire plate no matter what's on it. Also, it works so well with my schedule since I don't have to worry about feeding them again for the rest of the day.

I feed twice a day because my 16 year old chihuahua came from a situation of abuse unfortunately and due to that he has some food insecurity and anxiety and it heavily stresses him out to not have a morning meal. It’s something we tried to change a few years ago when we got him but honestly he has already lived a long time and has heart problems and we want to focus on giving him a happy and stress free end of life. So after trying for a few weeks to work toward one meal we quickly just let it go so he could just be happy and comfortable knowing that he is now safe at our house and we will always have food for him when he needs it :)

My Boston Terrier just turned 1-year old, and I had only been feeding her once per day. But, I noticed she had much more of an appetite than her male sibling, who lives next door, so I added a light morning meal. I am transitioning her to a commercially made raw diet, so she is eating raw and Blue Buffalo Life Protection puppy food. Her current bag of kibble will be her last, and I will eventually transition her to a DIY raw diet.

  • @AdventureswithLycanmyGSD
    @AdventureswithLycanmyGSD ปีที่แล้ว +10

My GSD is 3 years old and has been raw fed (DIY BARF) since I got him. Currently he eats twice a day. He thrives on this routine and it suits me too. Bloat is a huge worry as he is a GSD and his dad, as an example, got Bloat - granted his dad is kibble fed. I prefer twice a day as it gives me peace of mind plus he is not allowed to bounce around for a good hour after eating. Many times between meals while grooming him his tummy growled loudly in hunger despite being fed enough at meal times. I know he probably would not manage once day without hunger barfing frequently then - yes I understand the feeding at different times to manage this issue. For now I will pretend that he, as a canine, is hunting and catching small prey at least twice a day so he does not have to be too hungry in between meals.

He gets in 3-7 miles a day on mountain hikes running/walking at his own pace, this is why I feed him late in the day. This is just a preventive measure to reduce the risk of bloating or flipping stomach which is deadly.. So far so good just doing the best we can... Thanks again!!

I started feeding my Rottweiler once a day after the puppy phase, usually at around 8-9pm. She is currently 10 years old and still behaves like a puppy. She did start suffering from pancreatitis about 3 months ago, but my vet said it could happen to any dog this age and is random. So I just give her digestive enzymes and low fat food (Hill's science diet light) and she is doing great! I hope I get to share many more years with her.

I fed once per day for awhile. I did not notice any benefit, however that may take a lifetime to really know. However, my yorkie started to lose weight. When I increased the food it seemed to be a little harder for him to digest all at once. No major issues though. He was super active at the time. I went back to twice a day, however I try to space the meals closer together so that there is still a large chunk of time where they are not eating anything. This is similar to how some people do intermittent fasting. To me what is most important is WHAT they are eating versus WHEN. Also important to listen to the dog. Many prefer eating once per day. Others may prefer two. Dogs are individuals and broad assumptions across ALL dogs need to be taken with a grain of salt.

My dog is active fairly active and goes to dog parks on the weekends when we prefer to feed him twice to help support his energy levels because when we go to a dog park we let him run around freely and play with other dogs for an hour or two sometimes even three hours which is when he eats twice, but on weekdays when he doesn't do much we feed him once a day and this seems to work well as he gets more food when he's active. On the days he goes to a dog park we make sure he rest's and drinks plenty of water so that he isn't getting tired or dehydrated no matter how long he stays.

I do this with one of my dogs. She always struggled to eat breakfast and then got hunger pukes. But she really just did not want breakfast. She always eats dinner well (and I feed her fresh food not dog food). What helped her with the hunger pukes was giving her a probiotic mixed with water in the mornings. Since doing that she doesn’t have the pukes anymore.
I have a second dog who always wants breakfast and dinner. So I’m the same way I listen to the one dogs body who doesn’t want breakfast- I give my second dog breakfast and dinner since she wants it and they are both thriving. Dogs are smart and know what’s best for themselves and their bodies.

Before Sept. 2020 my dog Riley and my dad's dog Belle ate around my schedule and how many hours I worked its was sometime twice a day sometime once. Belle passed away from kidney failure then mom had knee surgery that went completely wrong barely a month later. I moved myself, Riley ,my cat and my two birds in. My moms dog was on strict schedule of same time twice a day feeding schedule my dog went with it. It was nightmare trying to balance my work, mom and making sure jack stayed on schedule cause then jack liked to go out at same time rush home a couple of times. My mom is bed ridden so its not her fault about letting them out. June 2021 I quit my job to be a full time care giver then Riley and Jack kept their routine Riley could care less about it. My cat Mow passed away of April 2022 then I adopted Johnny a IBD cat that has been something else. This year already we went from dry to all wet to all raw (prepackage at least for now). The past two week I've been trying to get out the routine so far I feed them between 8-11 then between 4-7 again. Riley is like I still don't care and Jack is wondering what is going. Johnny is a mystery then again all cats are.

The only thing we do in the am is supplements with a small amount of liver smear. It keeps cranky dogs from driving me crazy as I have various dogs at various stages as we rescue. I try to push off most of the food for later. Some of the picky dogs will have their own ideas, I will have a older pup wanting to eat 2 meals or 1, some times half the food or double. I decided as long as she gets what was meant to be digested regardless of when we are then fine. As for gut, I find detox liver plan every 6 months really helped along with herbs. Very interesting! My dog will not eat when I’m gone, so some days where I decide to hit snooze instead of waking up with plenty of time before work, Bud just doesn’t eat breakfast. Like this morning I gave it to him before dashing out the door and when I returned it was uneaten. Even when I am there I feel like I keep having to tell him to eat his breakfast. I’ve always felt bad when he skips meals but maybe he’d actually do better with one meal a day? He definitely has more excitement for dinner time so i guess it’s worth a try!

Our house has always had Golden Retrievers. The 3 in my own memory lived 16, 14 and the current one 13 years and still going, compared to a 10-12 year expectancy for the breed.
2 were rescued and the current one was from puppy. All of our dogs eat/ate twice a day except when the current one was a puppy and then she ate 3/4 times per day.
Never had any issues with cancer, thankfully. The 16 year old was out to rest due to an abscess in the mouth that would have required surgery which was not feasible at her age. The 14 year old was put to rest due to kidney failure. The current dog has early stage kidney failure but we caught it really really early and is being managed through a modified diet.
I think we've done our dogs proud so far, but we can always do better!
PS. I asked a question on your last video regarding Vitamin D supplementation and I could really use your help with it before I switch to raw, if you have a moment to answer it?

I have 3 pitbull mixes and I feed them twice a day. They get wet food with raw meal toppers and supplements in the am and kibble at night. When I do training sessions I'll decrease the kibble being given. For enrichment throughout the day I'll give them some greek yogurt and dog safe pb on a lick mat. Their skin looks much livelier with their diet, when they don't have dirt baths. I would love to go fully raw but it's not in my budget so I just give the freeze dried raw toppers currently. The main thing keeping me from feeding once a day is the fact that they'll chase after me demanding more food lol.

I used to feed Echo once per day in the morning. Then we took in a very underweight foster that needed to be fed twice a day to gain weight, and Echo fell into that habit too. I feel like Echo’s metabolism has changed with the twice daily feeding, and she actually eats more (isn’t any heavier though). I wonder if that’s a common phenomenon, and possibly the reason pet food manufacturers are pushing twice daily feeding? Honestly like the idea of feeding one per day and should probably take Echo back to that. But I’ll feel so bad during the transition period.

So now he's back to two meals a day only until he has his ideal weight. I am still thinking about going back to one meal a day, and will plan for a proper transition. I also think it is about how to plan activities for the hours he usually spent fof eating.

I switched to 1 meal/day several months ago. It took time to figure out amount because all my dog’s’ metabolism increased. My 2 adult Dobermans used to have good annual Holter readings. 5 months after the switch to one meal their Holter readings improved from good to perfect. My young male rescue intact Doberman had multiple severe episodes of idiopathic head tremors per day. Since switching, he has been free of tremors for months. My older female Doberman was developing a strong doggy odor prior to switching and odor free after the switch. The mammary tumors in my 9 year old Doberman and 13 year old dachshund stopped growing and have decreased in size.

My dog used to have multiple severe episodes/day. Now he’s had 3 in 10 months. Stay away from carbs which increases inflammation that actually causes most health issues.

But lately she's not interested in her breakfast. But would go crazy with whatever we're having for our breakfast 😞. Should i just start feeding her once a day like your dog? I have a 5 month old puppy who now gets food 3 times a day.
But I'm going to try to slowly turn that to 2 feedings.
I don't know if my dog will accept 1 x a day, since she always eats small bits, and never stuffs her self.
If she eats too much or too fast, she immediately has the hiccups.
She is an Aussi doodle, so an Australian Shepherd Poodle cross.
And poodles have sensitive stomachs, and are prone to gastric torsion.
One of the causes of gastric torsion is too few meals, especially just 1 meal.
Eating too much at once is therefore not always healthy.
These are all the breeds that are sensitive to gastric torsion.

Any dog can get gastric torsion. Especially if fed kibble. Pour a handful of kibble into the bowl. Pour warm water onto the bowl with kibble. Wait about 15 minutes and see how it swells in the bowl. That's what happens in the stomach. I always think of how uncomfortable that must feel and they can't tell us. When fed raw, the real food they're supposed to eat, they have less of the danger of bloat since the raw doesn't swell in the stomach. When you feed kibble they tell you to have fresh water for them for obvious reasons. With raw, the food doesn't swell in the stomach

She loves her food too much to slow down even with a licking mat or a slow feeder, and she is less hungry when I split her food in to two meals. If anyone has any suggestions on how to make her eat one meal and not be as hungry I am open to it

If you have time, play the “find it” game with her meal. Take the meal and divide it into mouthful portions and hide it while she waits. Then say find it and she can search for the food and eat it at each “station”. I started with smelly treats as a game and now use the whole meal. You can put some in a slow feeder, some in a puzzle, some on a lick mat and some tied up in a towel. If it’s messy raw, you can do it in the backyard. Max has fun with hunting for his food!
