    I learned a lot about mixing grays. I'll have to practice to get the many subtle shades and tonalities. Thanks for showing us what's possible.

    I love rocks, I've often wondered why other people couldn't see all the beautiful colors and shapes in common rocks. I would find it sad to live in a world where trees are green and brown and rocks are grey!
    I absolutely love your painting! Thank you.

    Thank you so much for sharing your talent with us Rick. I painted these rocks and use them for a reference for other paintingsthat I do that have rocks in them. One thing I have a problem with is spritzing and removing paint. For some reason my paper doesn't allow me to lift color or the spritz is not small enough. What paper is it that you use? I have learned so much from your videos.

    I learned so much from this video. Perhaps it's the simplicity and yet complexity of simple rocks that helped me focus on contrast, depth, and colors. Loved the use of the spritz to create texture. Very informative video and beautiful painting as well.

    I love painting rocks! So satisfying to use so many colours and techniques, and they almost always turn out authentically ‘rocky’. Will be experimenting today with different spritz bottles, great tip. Thanks for a terrific video.

    I took your advice and had fun with this - AND it turned out quite well. I learned to vary my tones and colours, warm and cool. The only thing that didn’t work was lifting the spritzing when the paint was dry. It only worked on damp paper. Weird. I make sure to always use cp cotton paper too. Thank you again Rick.

    Beautiful!! You are a great teacher!! Did you give any thought to using a mask and toothbrush to splatter tiny specks on some of the rocks? Every time I repeat one of your tutes, I learn so much in the process!!🤗

      @RickSurowiczWatercolor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just what I needed Rick, thank you. A different challenge to energize me as I've lost confidence a bit. I might use your reference photo or better still, a similar one of my own. The real difficulty will be the subtle variation in colour and using my own palette.

    Something so simple as rocks made into a beautiful watercolor painting. When you spritzed the sand between the rocks, how do you ensure the spray is only on those precise areas?

    • @RickSurowiczWatercolor
      @RickSurowiczWatercolor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wasn't too concerned about the spritz hitting other areas since everywhere has the texture, however, it doesn't really do much until I lift it with a tissue. I'm more precise with the tissue than the spritz of water.

    • @dawnabbott3783
      @dawnabbott3783 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rick Surowicz Watercolor thank you for replying. I guess being just a fine mist it would not leave “blooms” in the other rocks. As you can tell I am a beginner but I am going to give this a try!

    • @RickSurowiczWatercolor
      @RickSurowiczWatercolor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It won't leave blooms in the other rocks because my paper is dry when I do this. If my paper were damp, I would get blooms.

    Spookily just printed a photograph of rocks on a beach in Spain. Enjoyed your tutorial immensely and picked up lots of tips. Is possible to explain the quinacridone part of the pigment name? Thank you

    • @RickSurowiczWatercolor
      @RickSurowiczWatercolor  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Besides being nice fresh colors, the Quinacridone formulations are more lightfast than traditional formulations. For example, traditional formulations of Alizarin Crimson can be fugitive and fade. With Alizarin Crimson Quinacridone, it's less of an issue.

  • @jenf4963

    This is such a great tutorial. I tried the trick - when dry, spritz and lift with a Kleenex, unfortunately I was not able to get the effect. I wonder what I have done incorrectly. Any tips would be much appreciated.

    • @RickSurowiczWatercolor
      @RickSurowiczWatercolor  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It works best on darker values. Make sure the paper is dry. When you spritz, make sure your getting small droplets landing on your paper and not just a mist. Let the droplets sit for a few seconds. When you use your tissue to lift. you actually gently strike your paper with the tissue. Another way to get the droplets is to load you brush with clear water, take off any excessive bead then gently tap your brush against your hand. This will splatter droplets of water.
