    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. It recoiled HARD. I shoot all these calibers all the time and there was way more recoil with that shot than with the .40, and usually they are about the same, within 5-10% felt recoil of one another. This one felt like 50% more than the .40. Still a quality control issue by Sig...

      Without handling the case it's tough to be sure, but it looks to me like the damage to the case occurred when the slide slammed the case mouth - off center - into the breach face. When a case ruptures during firing, you'll see carbon around the split caused by burning propellant. I'll add that at .45 ACP pressures (under 21K PSI), case failure is rare...particularly with factory new cases.

      I agree, although 40 S&W is mainly used as plinking ammo for my Glock 20, 10mm. Which is my favorite handgun cartridge of all time. Even the 45 ACP doesn't come close to it's default energy of 500 to 600 foor lbs of Energy, or 700 to 800+ foot lbs of it's loaded to it's true performance levels. I've even seen 10mm loads gets as high as 1,000+ foot lbs of Energy.

  • @dennischi6107
    @dennischi6107 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Your case did not rupture. It got crushed by the slide when the slide closed on it. It failed to eject because you did not have the magazine in. The follower or next round in the magazine assists upward/right side ejection. More extractor tension will help with more positive ejection when no mag is in. It's a problem I fix on lots of 1911's. Also it would be nice if you could barrow a 9mm with 4-5" barrel so it matches closer with your 40-45. 3" 9mm can be 100fps slower than 4.5" barrels.

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for the info- I was wondering if it was because I removed the mag, but then I reasoned that other guns fire without a mag inserted no issue. But if it is a 1911 thing then I guess that makes sense. I was however discussing with another viewer that that particular shot had a lot of recoil, more than normal. So maybe an out of spec extra spicy factory load in conjunction with the mag being released didn't help matters. I only removed the mag because I didn't want it chambering the next round...

    People seem to have forgotten or have ignored that some calibers hit more powerfully than others and have only concentrated on penetration. Hunters will tell you game does react differently to more powerful bullets. Therefore so should people, hence use the 40S&W or the .45acp as it will hurt more than the .380 or 9mm.

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yeah I never understood the people who focus on penetration. For self defense against human agressors, as long as it's over 12" in the gel blocks then after that ideally you want the largest wound cavity possible. 9mm, .40, and .45 all have zero problems penetrating well beyond 12" with pretty much all standard weight fully expanded hollow points- .40 & .45 obviously tend to leave larger diameter wound cavities. That said, I carry 9mm for size/capacity/recoil so I'm not dogging anyone who doesn't carry .40 or .45...

      @@BuckeyeBallisticsi think that penetration became the issue because the fbi made it the issue after the 9mm so called failure in the Miami shooting. A 9mm round went through the arm into the chest of the perp stoped just short of the heart. The fbi for some reason became the go to on bullet performance for le agencies then it went over to the defense market.
      But what I have always thought was bs is the winchesters silver tip hp 9mm was chosen because of its low chance of over penetration.
      Thank of the bs it takes to blame the round for lack of penetration when the round was picked because of shallow penetration in the first place
      Its been so long but I think it was a 115gr bullet. ( btw 115gr usto be the normal weight not a light weight)

I carried a CZ P-10C for a bit and shot a big 5 gallon water jug and the jacket came off almost every bullet. I switched to my Glock 30 for a bit and did the same test and those jackets separated from the bullets too. I’m using some recent bought 147 grain HST and need to test them out of the FN Reflex to see if it’s back to the old HST I remember. Great video. I don't know if it makes a difference but I noticed on some guns you pulled the magazine out after loading and on some, you didn't. On the .45 you pulled the magazine out after loading the round. I have always assumed that the magazine (and follower) aided in at least the direction of the ejection if not the strength of ejection. Could that have caused the stovepipe after the burst case? Also, most stovepipes in my experience are usually from the upward recoil of the firearm (limp-wristing). As mentioned by other commenters could the round have been way too hot and thus more upward recoil?

    That case rupture looked very strange, glad it wasn't anything worse. I would pull that barrel and check some rounds doing the plunk test. Maybe a have a gunsmith look it over for you. I know SIG and Hornady both have disclaimers on their defensive cup and core ammo, since we are still under Chinas "slow shipping crisis" supposedly due to the "covid." Even today, still, at 5/19/2023, Its a ludicrous excuse/reason in my mind. SIG and Hornady have these disclaimers that, they will be using uncoated brass until they can get back to nickel plating as fast as needed for production. (or something close to that) Its probably a 24 hr turnaround normally Even these large US ammo companies send their brass out to be nickel plated, and its at least a 4 week turnaround, and they cannot have that. Which I completely understand. Nickel is not arriving fast enough or in enough quantity from suppliers (probably Chinese suppliers) Most of these major manufacturers of ammo, make their own cases, and projectiles, like S&B, Fiocchi, LaPua, Remington, Winchester, Hornady, Federal Premium , etc I am not sure about Sig I believe they get at least some cases from Starline brass. Many of the rest are buying from the large brass and projectile companies and making their ammo. CCI is another I am not sure about, but I would think they make their own, brass and projectiles, especially since they do manufacture primers. I have no concrete knowledge tho. Maybe someone else does.

      @@BuckeyeBallisticsthank you for the video. It's always interesting to see these. I'm just not 100% comfortable with a 9mm for self defense. What's your honest overall opinion?

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      9mm does a pretty good job with the right load. I watch a ton of police shootouts, and 90% of them or better are carrying 9mm and it almost always does the job. I've seen a ton of them where one shot stops the badguy who is shooting back, and in over half of those they die even though the cops immediately start rendering aid and call medics. Usually if they stop from one shot it's because it hit a vital organ- one expanded 9mm hollow point to the lung or heart and you are done. As always said, shot placement is key, not caliber. The ones that survive always survive because they missed the vitals.
      As you can see in this video, 9mm does at least 90% of what a .40 and .45 does. I carry 9mm for the compact size, lower recoil and thus faster follow up shots/accuracy- and the higher capacity. I'm actually about to switch over to .30 Super Carry for even higher capacity when I get my Shield Plus here soon. 9mm has plent of power, just use good ammo. I have a 9mm gel test playlist on the channel with all my tests thus far...
