  • The Big Give Christmas Challenge is running from noon on Tuesday 30 November to midnight on Tuesday 7 December. For these seven days, The Big Give offers participating charities like GWT the opportunity to have their donations doubled as part of the Challenge.
Thousands of years ago, a variety of grazing animals would once have roamed here, including European bison, wild ox and beavers. Their different methods of grazing and disturbance created a dynamic landscape of trees, scrub, heathland, marshes, grassland, groves and thickets. This in turn would have helped to develop rich and diverse wildlife communities.
Since the reduction of natural grazing animals, Gloucestershire has seen a decline in species that relied on the more open habitats these animals created - such as the small pearl-bordered fritillary butterfly. In order to enhance and protect this mosaic of different habitats; cattle, sheep and ponies have been introduced to help create and maintain open spaces, especially heathland.
Every donation we receive online between the 30 November to the 7 December will be doubled - one donation, twice the impact.

But sheep aren't native. Ponies and cattle replicate the effects of their wild ancestors which roamed here for tens of thousands of years, sheep however have only been here a blink of an eye and so much ecological damage has been caused by them.
