Even if 0.9 billion hectares is re-forested it would take 20 years to absorb 30% of the excess carbon in the atmosphere (about 500 billion tons), in those 20 years we will have produced another 700 billion tons or so. Even if we did this (which we’re not) we’d be fighting a losing battle.

Your full stop evaluation, admission project failures & then PIVOTED to get it right is... both rare & wonderful, Tom. And the integration of AI in our Earth restoration initiatives is absolutely critical. Absolutely critical. Zooming out across both Earth & recent history- Humanity has not been good at protecting the planet. While it is not "our" Earth, it is our one & only HOME. I have no illusion that Humanity, as a whole, will commit itself to healing our Planet of Origin. They won't. But many of us will.

Till the time the health of nations is determined by Consumption/Production, i.e GDP, fundamental shift towards sustainable living will not be achieved. An amazing talk, I have been preaching the same truth for decades, but as I no longer work in academia many of my words fall on silent ears. I spent years studying the relationship between fungal ecosystems and forests, especially where invasive non-native trees have taken hold. The damage to the soil from invasive species is immense, I spent 13 months in Florida looking at an invasive tree species, my research indicated the reason I had become invasive was because it’s leaves deposited a chemical in the soil which inhibited the growth of the mycorrhizal fungi of the native species. Biodiversity is the number one key to helping restore this planet, monoculture and trees for lumber are not the solution. A forest can take 40 years just to achieve carbon neutrality. Trees for lumber do not live long enough to fix carbon and so cause more damage than good. Anyway that’s my rant over, as a fellow mycologist I hear you and will look into the RESTOR project. Everyone should look to see if their is something they can do either locally or by providing accurate information. Once again, great speech.
For everyone interested: Restor will be coming 2021 - until then, take a first look and/or connect at www.restor.eco Thank you too for all the positive and supportive feedback, it is much appreciated and very motivating for all of us of the restoration community working on Restor! 😊 - Crowther Lab

Till now earth has lost 67% ecology, 98.97% biodiversity, 99.95% animal species gone extinct, 78.79% fungus gone extinct, fungus are medicine for trees, trees are no more immune from micro life infections, ecology is immune system of earth, biodiversity is the nurvous system 😢, now you understand what wrong we have done 😢
This video inspires me to want to start an ecological restoration project here at home in Canada. I wonder if there's a way to translate this thought into reality. Maybe I'll call the department of forestry.

I hope he knows that he and others who advocate, who speak so passionately about biodiversity know that they’re inspiring others like me across the globe to be more aware of the biodiversity loss. My name is Ruby Lee. I’m one of the dime-a-dozen students who study at GSIS. I am good at English and bad at Maths, even though my mom tries very hard to make me better. I am 12. I love the world. I love the people. I love life (not my life, but the life I see in everything else). And I fell in love the same way most fell asleep; slowly at first and then all at once.
It started with “I love Trees” and never really ended for me. I gained interests, grew, matured, lost friends, made some. My dog passed away. I adopted a poodle years after and I love him more than I love life.
This is totally brilliant! This opens a lot of possibilities. An enabler. Something like this for water sources around the globe could help a lot. Also for the oceans. Having a database of analysis, stats and facts for all this could enable further action. Limitless possibilities.
I like what I hear, albeit 3yrs after it was published. I am an ecologist w/restoration experience. How can I engage and enable this movement further. I would love to know.
Thank Prof. Thomas Crowther. Your idea is very impressive and I believe if all countries follow your method we can have good approach for battle the climate change.😀😀
Aside from willful ignorance, Idk why people struggle to upgrade their diets to go Vegan. You can still keep whatever religious beliefs you have; it's the easiest way to preserve the only planet we have and our bodies also thrive off of plants as a bonus. I went Vegan as a birthday gift/challenge to myself and it's been the most impactful decision of my life that requires the least effort.
I wish people could understand that keeping the environment clean is not a priority in third world countries, I know because I live in one. To people in here survival is more important than keeping the environment clean, and even though some of us want to help, it won't even matter because the corrupt government actions outweighs ours. In short before we can help in other matters the world is facing we must first fix our system/ government and considering that most citizens here are stupid and uneducated, I don't think this country will help in this matter not in the next following years or so. If you want other countries to take action about this matter, start with the rich and developed countries, and don't expect anything from the poor.
Exactly! Let’s increase forestry in urban areas and reduce population! I guess s this is already being implemented thanks to leading global activists and charitable international an US organisations!
Curious about these opposing forces that provides continuity in Nature. Although there is a great wealth of educational resources about this topic, most of them just deals on the superficial aspects and not it's essence. Thank you for sharing this wonderful and thought provoking content.
another relevant point: since the pleistocene megafauna extinction (around 12000 bc), there's been a relative lack of megafauna (huge grazing animals). as a result, ecology has been unbalanced for thousands of years. for example, the highly productive, biodiverse 'mammoth steppe' biome collapsed due to the extinctions, leaving behind tundra (ie frozen wasteland). there's an ongoing project to restore the mammoth steppe, known as Pleistocene Park, which would not only increase biodiversity, but also help sequester lots of co2, offsetting global warming.
You'd be surprised by how many people wouldn't vote for a politician that wanted to implement a tree tax. Here in Aus we introduced a carbon tax, months later the next political party won on a promise to remove the carbon tax, which they did. That same party is still in power and refuses to implement a green energy plan for the county. They keep pushing coal and now Gas power stations. Apparently we need a mix of dirty and clean energy.. People think this is common sense, mean while our house burns....

Seriously, we need to leave nature to itself and protect it. When we'll decide to vote 70% of the Earth as a protected zone, and get what we need from our share (30%), our survival we'll be assured. Every human made intervention, like restauration, is disruption of the evironnement. We can favorise it, but we must do as little as possible.

Wow what a deep analysis about the echo restoration and it uses. This man extracted the fundamental ideas of restoration which would be useful to many as they have been trying to broadcast this idea through so many years
I really like this Tedtalk! We should never forget that stop the damage is the REAL solution for climate change. Thanks Thomas to give a such great talk.
not sure about the whole climate change narrative..it’s good to have dissuasion though?
maybe it’s actually getting cooler?
maybe ice melting though logical..
isn’t so simple and it’s cooling going towards small ice age?
no one really knows..especially experts
Everything he said about the importance of restoring not only trees, but a natural ecosystem that includes trees begs the question- "Why are we destroying these rich old growth forests?" For a hamburger? For the brief taste of other animal products?
"While the wildfires raging in the Amazon rainforest may constitute an “international crisis,” they are hardly an accident.
The vast majority of the fires have been set by loggers and ranchers to clear land for cattle. The practice is on the rise, encouraged by Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s populist pro-business president, who is backed by the country’s so-called “beef caucus.”
While this may be business as usual for Brazil’s beef farmers, the rest of the world is looking on in horror.
So, for those wondering how they could help save the rainforest, known as “the planet’s lungs” for producing about 20% of the world’s oxygen, the answer may be simple. Eat less meat."- CNN
Another reason they burn the Amazon is to grow soy. "More than three-quarters (77%) of global soy is fed to livestock for meat and dairy production. Most of the rest is used for biofuels, industry or vegetable oils. Just 7% of soy is used directly for human food products such as tofu, soy milk, edamame beans, and tempeh." -Our World in Data
@@gracie99999 "A 2019 review of scientific papers found the consensus on the cause of climate change to be at 100%, and a 2021 study concluded that over 99% of scientific papers agree on the human cause of climate change."-Wikipedia
"Yes, the vast majority of actively publishing climate scientists - 97 percent - agree that humans are causing global warming and climate change."-NASA
@@someguy2135 well, presently we don’t know what’s from what..truth is false and up is down etc
I agree with those that state we are moving towards a small ice age..not necessary to
correlate melting to heating because it’s obviously not that simple.
it’s not really about how many of these cats agree to this or that but scientific facts which some have moved away from.
This is the best gift we can give to our children and grandchildren
Even if 0.9 billion hectares is re-forested it would take 20 years to absorb 30% of the excess carbon in the atmosphere (about 500 billion tons), in those 20 years we will have produced another 700 billion tons or so.
Even if we did this (which we’re not) we’d be fighting a losing battle.
Tom & teams: a wonderful, open & expansive Earth (biodiversity) initiative. It begins to mirror the natural GENIUS OF EARTH.
I'm sharing this with my enviro science students in Australia. Absolutely brilliant!!!!
"You are going to have to cool the planet. It will change everything that humanity is doing right now. You will have to replant the forests and restore the soils and cleanse the rivers. People will have to live very simply, for all the wealth of the world will be spent on this."
"There are a thousand solutions that will be needed, and you only have a few. You will have to find the others, and it will take great human effort and collaboration to make this possible."
'The Global Emergency' - *NewMessage org*
Till the time the health of nations is determined by Consumption/Production, i.e GDP, fundamental shift towards sustainable living will not be achieved.
Let's move to a different model which takes into account the physical and mental welfare of human beings, value of forests, clean rivers, bio diversity.

Jail Bolsonaro: CUT MORE OF THE AMAZON.
Amazing video, and why does it only have 128,000 views.
From Portugal, it hurts me hear that. Our country isn't much better from that
An amazing talk, I have been preaching the same truth for decades, but as I no longer work in academia many of my words fall on silent ears.
For everyone interested: Restor will be coming 2021 - until then, take a first look and/or connect at www.restor.eco
Thank you too for all the positive and supportive feedback, it is much appreciated and very motivating for all of us of the restoration community working on Restor! 😊 - Crowther Lab
This content is very good.
His accent and pronunciation is so cleary. This is good for listening practicing.
Very excited by the possibility of maintaining and increasing biodiversity in our world. What a magnificent goal to move me forward.
An excellent talk inspiring us to take action!

That was awesome 👏 regards from Poland 🇵🇱 We are restoring our land here
Hi
Interesują mnie takie projekty na terenie Polski. Masz jakieś przykłady z którymi można się zaznajomić?
The number of commercials in this video is shocking.
This video needs far more likes and shares, i started spreading it to all the people i know are engaged into environmental topics and i would appreciate everyone who does the same. Thank you.
An RTS that gamifies this in the same way we Plague inc. plays kids could feel more passionately about the high level process this involves while creating grass roots camps that get kids out and planting.

Thank you for spreading environment awareness! 🙏
This video inspires me to want to start an ecological restoration project here at home in Canada. I wonder if there's a way to translate this thought into reality. Maybe I'll call the department of forestry.
Maybe info.ecosia.org/ could help you :)
That’s the way to to do it :)
See if there is a local native plant society. Good luck.
Wow! What a magnificent advancement for the restoration movements all over the Earth!

Trees are such miracles
Despite the economic crisis, now is still the best time to start up an investment
Yeah, investing now should be at the top list of every wise one,in few months to come you'll be happy with the decision you made today
Exactly, but what's actually there to invest in?
Buy Theta Ethereum and Bitcoin 💯

Love this video! I got to work with UNEP a little on this campaign. It's such a big vision through, we could not even scratch the surface.
This is totally brilliant! This opens a lot of possibilities. An enabler. Something like this for water sources around the globe could help a lot. Also for the oceans. Having a database of analysis, stats and facts for all this could enable further action. Limitless possibilities.
Fantastic video!!! Very well put together, and very well stated! Thank you for doing the work you are doing!

Thank you for sharing 🙏
Amazing documentary!!great job❤️
If you pause the video on 2:27 you can see the face of Mother Nature.
We are with you! Stay true Never GIve Up.
Wow! Absolutely amazing!
Thank you.
Curious about these opposing forces that provides continuity in Nature. Although there is a great wealth of educational resources about this topic, most of them just deals on the superficial aspects and not it's essence. Thank you for sharing this wonderful and thought provoking content.

Great talk, thank you!
another relevant point: since the pleistocene megafauna extinction (around 12000 bc), there's been a relative lack of megafauna (huge grazing animals). as a result, ecology has been unbalanced for thousands of years. for example, the highly productive, biodiverse 'mammoth steppe' biome collapsed due to the extinctions, leaving behind tundra (ie frozen wasteland). there's an ongoing project to restore the mammoth steppe, known as Pleistocene Park, which would not only increase biodiversity, but also help sequester lots of co2, offsetting global warming.

I have a idea what about goverment taking tree tax from the people and giving job to homeless for planting tree and taking care of it
th-cam.com/video/7ZVVUHrkNRs/w-d-xo.html
You'd be surprised by how many people wouldn't vote for a politician that wanted to implement a tree tax. Here in Aus we introduced a carbon tax, months later the next political party won on a promise to remove the carbon tax, which they did. That same party is still in power and refuses to implement a green energy plan for the county. They keep pushing coal and now Gas power stations. Apparently we need a mix of dirty and clean energy.. People think this is common sense, mean while our house burns....

Biodiversity is key. Good luck.
Great idea👍
Seriously, we need to leave nature to itself and protect it. When we'll decide to vote 70% of the Earth as a protected zone, and get what we need from our share (30%), our survival we'll be assured. Every human made intervention, like restauration, is disruption of the evironnement. We can favorise it, but we must do as little as possible.
Beautiful video, thank you Thomas! Incredibly informative....climate change is such an existential issues that urges us to see the whole. It's video's like these that can provide a framework for doing so. Keep em coming :)
these dislikers are ALIENS who need CO2 for survival.
i would say we humans because we still want to destroy and dont listen, i m not one of them and im still trying to do what i can to do bether for mother earth
Hey! Don’t rope us aliens in with them! We are just watching what you’re doing
(Also it is likely YT just evening out likes vs dislikes which has been a common frustration among users. It started when people massively disliked a YT Rewind video)
Not exactly, it's more who thinks of doing that, and another thing, some of those places though a low percentage should continue to be the meadows they are since imagine what will happen to the herbs that don't grow in such a sun less area as in a forest.... Also, other thing, NO MONOCULTURE!!, plus etc
Yeah but do we have enough time? Probably not! What if they are just greenwashing all of this like Brazil. Most big companies are greenwashing their products. WE NEED PROOF IF YOU ARE TRULY GOING TO DO THIS
73 people didn't like this? WHY?
Really I love your speech, well balanced.
Thank you, Thomas.
