That slow motion wasn’t very slow at all and explained nothing just wfi but I already know how it works because it’s one of the oldest tricks

Ahem. Air resistance or whatever makes the ring spin once dropped. Once the ring is spinning the bottom of the ring pushes through the middle of the chain making it go around the ring and then you run out of chain tightening the makeshift knot.
Explanation because the slow motion is too fast: the ring is flipping as it falls and thus wrapping the chain around itself, tying a knot by falling. Neat

The explanation is that the ring gets caught a little bit by his middle finger as it falls, so it spins and get caught by the chain.

The magic happens BEFORE the slow motion, when he's positioning the ring around the chain
No it happens after it’s dropped. The ring spins and the chain get wrapped around it.
I set the slow motion itself in the slowest slow motion settings on TH-cam (0.25) and i still couldn't make sense of it lol
You drop it with two fingers and let it go by one fingers and the ring will be rotated
You have to hold it like in the video, then release your index first so that it spin
The trick is to give a gentle nudge to the ring in the direction of falling, just as you release it. It provides a torque which leads to the chain intertwining itself 'round the ring. If you just release it like that, it won't get stuck, it'll just fall off.
I mean just in case anyone tried to perform this and starts losing their hair because it won't stuck, this is the trick.

To those that dont know how that happened,
The ring simply gave enough force on the chain that the chain went flopping through the sides of yhe ring when the ring is falling and made a tie itself

That was the momentum physics.
The way he let’s go of the ring causes the ring to spin slightly. Notice how in the slow mo it isn’t standing horizontally, rather the ring is vertical. Because the ring is spinning slightly, the chain will loops around it toward the end.

The friction/angle the ring fell made the chain work like a swing set and twist over the ring creating a loop.

It is science
The magic is what you do just before releasing the ring. It's not a continuous ring anyway.
The ring will need to be a certain circumference to allow enough space for the wrap around, and weigh so that it pulls on the chain on the way down

its because when the ring falls down, the ring rotate a little bit vertical. so thats why it makes something chain reaction

Your slow motion failed to explain the trick.
Explanation:
The ring flipped as it fell the chain wraps around the ring itself and creates a knot.
It's not clear, but I think the ring rotates through 180 effectively catching a loop.
Watch carefully at 0:16 there you can see the ring has a kind of slot that can be locked/ unlocked. Then watch again at 0:29, his right hand pushed the ring to the palm of left hand to unlock that certain part of the ring then it can lock the chain.
If you drop one side of the ring before the other this happens , you can watch veritasium's three perplexing physics problems

The ring is a carabiner. You pressed it slightly when pushed it against your palm. I haven't yet tried the trick, but I do have the carabiner. 👍
Good call dude 👍 I watched that video like ten times and I couldn’t make sense of it. Wasn’t till you explained it that I noticed that he starts the trick holding the ring in one specific place / never allows the part that his fingers are covering it to be openly visible to the camera. It’s when he’s getting ready to drop the ring the second time that you can see him exert a little force on the ring, and at that moment you catch a glimpse of the mechanism partially open.
No wonder he made the “slow motion” video so fast 😄, the more time you have to stare at that ring, the more it gives itself away 👌

I remember playing with this ring as a kid, I had this rlly big bday party once cuz I recovered from pneumonia and they had a magician, I ended up taking the ring home then immediately tangled the chain up 😅
