I wonder, why does Stockfish say 4.8 on the previous move? It doesn't seem like that long a sequence leading to checkmate... Does Stockfish give up analyzing lines after the rook sacrifice because it looks silly? Or how does he not see it?

Yep. All those high level moves aren't so much motivating as they are deluding. But the same is true for super GMs watching an engine that's rated a thousand points higher all the while believing they'll just casually fold that kind of play into their game. Nope. If only desire truly had the capacity to run roughshod over reality.
Please, do more of this "suppressing Stockfish's eval" thing. It's so difficult to see how hard to find are moves when you know that it's +2 and that there is a winning move somewhere, compared to the live situation players are in...
Agreed! The eval bar is great for letting us plebs better understand positions and try to figure out why it's good/bad before Levy does any analysis, but the drama here was perfect.
Levy is literally the equivalent of a Spanish soccer commentator that yells "GOOOOOOOL" but with chess. Which is borderline impossible to do, but he somehow does it. Well done.
I've always wanted to do a compilation of his dramatic announcements of moves, there are so many great "ROOK TAKES H2!!" or "Beeeeeerrrrshop c wann" moments. I just don't know how to compile these moments without going through his hundreds of videos by hand lol (I even know what music I would put on it - th-cam.com/video/IyliQDA8Vh4/w-d-xo.html )
I love that Stockfish doesn't even see it's forced mate in 12 at like 25 depth... Until you let it run even deeper, and around ~38 depth on lichess it finally saw the forced mate after Rxh2. During the analysis it kept fluctuating from +6 to -70 constantly too, it's so funny seeing the engine having an aneurysm from a single move.
I was just thinking about this. I started watching chess content before Levy and it was interesting but you really needed a lot of patience. he has so much charisma and brings so much energy its like watching MMA for nerds now.
I know how the pieces move, and played on occasion through my life. I love watching the breakdowns and instruction Levy gives though I know in my mid 50's I'll never get great. But this video is just mind blowing to me, it reminds me of watching a skilled magician perform their illusions. And Levy's commentary comes across as informative to show you the brilliance rather than spoiling the magic. Thank you for this!
Shakh is such a beast. He plays a fearless style, going for complications and initiative at every chance. He's been my favorite player for years. I'm thrilled to see him playing so well! To have two career-defining brilliancies in one tournament is LEGENDARY STUFF!
There used to be brilliancy prizes at tournaments, but that doesn't happen anymore. I guess that the reasons could be that a brilliancy is dependent on the taste of the jurors, up for bribery or a game full of computer preparation could win
They have "Fight of the night" in the UFC, and it doesn't necessarily go to the best fighter but to the most entertaining/impressive match. Could definitely be implemented well into chess :)
I've been a big fan of Mamedyarov for as long as I've been following chess and seeing these last two games warms my heart. Love seeing this complicated, risky chess being played at the highest levels by some people at least.
Few years ago Shak played a 2900 level in St louis and I was convinced 100% that he will be the next world champ, then he had a kid and got distracted and fell off .. But you can see clearly he is on another level sometimes ..
There was an article a couple weeks ago during another tournament that said something to the effect of: mamedyarov is clearly out of shape and is just a punching bag at the moment. Mamedyarov: and I took that personally.
He might do very well, but the kind of crazy attack he plays in this game wouldn't work in classical. Ultimately, Richard Rapport did a mistake that he wouldn't have made with more time. That doesn't take anything away from Mamedyarov. It's amazing how much he managed to read with so little time. But it's not clear how that will transfer the candidates.
Also have that bad habit, but it is a good thing that the real world and me having a noisy background prevents me from being mesmerized and hypnotized by Levy's passion
9:50 that jump from -4 to -30 is the most hilarious thing I have seen. Engines generally doesn’t grant point on good moves but takes points on bad moves . Even as a weaker browser stockfish it’s astonishing that a human played a move that took an engine 2 to 3 seconds to realize just how strong it was
I legit think if Mamedyarov was born a few decades earlier, he would be in the same list as Morphy, Capablanca, Bobby, etc. And he is a nice guy on top of that.
Man, Shak really is my absolute favourite player. Even though he slipped a little bit below the level he was 4 years ago his late rise is still inspirational and he plays the most entertaining chess at top level. His games against Rapport were the biggest reason to watch super tournaments the last few years.
